GSK donates medicines worth Rs. 2 million to flood victims

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the leading pharmaceuticals, vaccines and healthcare company in Sri Lanka, has donated a consignment of essential medicines worth Rs. 2 million to the government for the use of those affected by the recent floods. The consignment was presented to the Minister of Health, Maithripala Sirisena by GSK Pharmaceuticals Sri Lanka Managing Director, Stuart Chapman recently. The consignment comprised broad spectrum antibiotics, respiratory products (including inhalers) and vitamins.

Investors react to IMF’s confidence at Colombo

More stocks listed in Colombo Stock market joined the positive streak to post substantial gains on Thursday the 3 February, 2011 while International Monetary Fund (IMF) disbursed its sixth tranche amounting to US $ 216 million to Sri Lanka under the US $ 2.6 billion loan. Retail sentiment is bullish irrespective of the stagnation in some of the fundamentally strong blue chip counters according to brokers. Plantation and Manufacturing sectors were on the uptrend during trading hours.

Large cap counters continued to underperform small and mid caps which is a cause for concern according to brokers.

Commercial Bank helps flood victims in Eastern Province

The Commercial Bank of Ceylon recently assisted people living in flood affected areas in the Eastern Province, in a continuation of the Bank’s efforts to support the community.
The Bank donated stocks of the most urgently needed dry rations, water, milk powder and other essential items to these people with the help of the Sri Lanka Army. In addition to the Bank, employees of all Commercial Bank branches contributed funds for this project. The staff of the Bank’s branches at Hingurakgoda, Batticaloa and Valaichchenai helped to distribute these items.

Colomb Bourse closed the trading on Tuesday the 1 February, 2011 with active retail trading in the small and mid-cap stocks whilst the All Share Price Index (ASPI) closed at 7,190.77, shot up 0.22% by 15.90 points and the Milanka Price Index (MPI) closed at 7,121.28, dipped 0.18% through 12.99 points.
