Vista Rooms, South Asia’s largest chain of affordable stays, is on track to onboard 1000 properties with over 10,000 rooms by the end of 2018. With the country experiencing a growth of 14% vis-a-vis last year in tourist arrivals and India accounting for 17.4% of these 2 million tourists, the online startup believes it’ll play a huge role in their local growth plans. These plans are further bolstered by the staggering 73% surge in online travel booking revenue over the past 5 years in Sri Lanka.

Working closely with property owners, Vista Rooms goes beyond increasing monthly revenues for their partners, by taking care of the entire guest lifecycle and improving day-to-day operations. Regular audits of each property guarantees a standardised experience for all guests – their average review score of over 7/10 on Booking.com is a testament of this focus on excellent guest experience. With access to the Vista Rooms’ preferred vendors, their partners source their supplies at lower rates and thereby, reduce their maintenance costs considerably.

“We have a 360 degree approach to managing properties, which has led to a growth of over 20% in revenues for our partners. It’s not just about listing these properties, but actually partnering with owners to understand their businesses and then, utilize our expertise to help them grow,” said Nadeem Kassim, AVP, Vista Rooms, Sri Lanka.

Since entering the country in April 2016, Vista Rooms has been successful in quickly capturing market share and building the largest network of branded stays in Sri Lanka with over 350 properties across 30 cities. Their recent move to offer end-to-end support as a complete turnkey solutions provider for over 50 villa and boutique properties  has further strengthened their position.

“The informal tourism sector is experiencing a surge in popularity with more and more travellers seeking authentic travel experiences. Till date, a lack of transparency in this segment has pushed people to book hotels. By providing a standardised experience and a transparent reviewing mechanism, guests will have more confidence to book these alternate stays. Apart from this, the price optimisation and reputation management tools that Vista Rooms offers to its partners, I see a clear path for growth of the sector,  and over time, becoming a traveller’s preferred choice,” said Amit Damani, Co-Founder, Vista Room.

Colombo, Thursday 28th September 2017: When it comes to adventure and survival in the wild, no one does it better than Bear Grylls. Amongst all of the adventure experiences that he has created for millions of fans around the world, is an episode of Running Wild that was actually filmed in Sri Lanka. Premier outdoor and eco-tourism solutions provider Eco Team was on hand to make sure the experience of Sri Lanka for the cast and crew was a truly extraordinary one.

Eco Team was the official logistics provider for this episode of Running Wild featuring Mike Horn and Matt Pokora in the Samanala Wewa region. The area which is more than 10km away from human inhabitancy meant that the cast and crew had to trek with all their equipment. The film crew also camped in the great outdoors in close proximity to wild elephants and other animals. To ensure that the smooth operations of filming this episode, Eco Team put together a logistics crew of close to 75 members.

Speaking on this significant feat Founder and Chief Experience Officer of Eco Team Anurudhdha Bandara said, “Efficiency is of high importance in such situations as time and resources are very limited. Food and drinks had to be provided for the crew from a distance of more than 6km away, merely on foot and this is no easy task but Eco Team was equipped with the labour, facilities and equipment needed to complete this challenge. In creating an adventure programme watched by millions around the world, Eco Team had an adventure of our own making sure that the team truly experienced Sri Lanka.”

First broadcasted in the year 2014, featuring famous High School Musical movie star Zac Efron, ‘Running Wild with Bear Grylls’ is a survival skills reality television series. It stars world renown British adventurer, ex SAS and French Foreign Ligonier Bear Grylls who is also known for his television series ‘Man vs. Wild.’ Throughout the many episodes of the show, ‘Running Wild’ has featured celebrities such as former US president Barack Obama, Titanic movie star Kate Winslet and award winning actress Julia Roberts.

During their expedition the episode’s host Mike Horn, the guest celebrity Matt Pokora and the crew consisting of over thirty members were all in Sri Lanka for the production of this episode. Mike Horn is also a world renowned adventurer who was dubbed the ‘world’s greatest living man’ by the Telegraph UK, having circumnavigated and trekked around the world from pole to pole and even along the equator – Latitude Zero with no motorised transport. He has also circled the Arctic solo using a kayak, ski and his own feet, expedited the Amazon on his own and scaled mountains over 8,000 metres. The guest celebrity of the episode, Matt Pokora is a famous French singer and songwriter who has also taken up a number of acting roles. Together, they stepped out into the virgin forest of Samanala Wewa Nature Reserve which is located in between Belihuloya and Kaltota regions, mid-way through the dry and wet zone. The area is located in an untouched, remote area where wild elephant sightings are many which increased the risk for the two stars as well as the large production crew. However all’s well that ended well.

The episode was telecasted in February this year on M6 French TV. For more information please contact Eco Team on 0710 662270.

Has fine dining and seafood been on your mind? Cast your net wide and step out of your comfort zone to experience delicious multi-cuisine dishes created with the freshest, flakiest barramundi sourced from Round Island at Ramada Colombo’s Barramundi Promotion starting this week.

Round Island’s sustainable and commercially farmed premium quality barramundi will be the star of the show from 29 September to 12 October at the Ramada Colombo. The hotel’s top chefs have created signature dishes based on this main ingredient, highlighting the delicate texture of the fish and the distinctive taste of sustainably farmed seafood.

Executive Chef Shareef Kareem has created three dishes; ginger and lemongrass marinated grilled barramundi fillet with coconut risotto, mango salsa and centenella salad; barramundi braised in creamy dill and saffron sauce, with baby vegetables, crispy sweet potato and barramundi caviar; and herb-crumbed baked barramundi with Greek salad and prawn bisque sauce. “Chefs love barramundi because it’s a delicious ingredient to work with, but it can be challenging to find good produce,” says Chef Kareem. “Round Island barramundi makes all the difference-it gives us the chance to work with premium quality produce that is fresh, sustainable and completely delicious.”

Indian Chef Ziyad Akthar Khan has created Indian spice-marinated tandoori barramundi fillet with homemade chilli paratha and kachumbari salad. Sous Chef Jude Calistus Michael has devised a dish for the health conscious-Curry Leaves Tapenade marinated Barramundi fish fillet wrapped in pandan leaves and baked, with thebu kola and pomelo salad, spiced mango and passion coulis to accompany. The ingredients have been chosen for their ability to reduce the level of sugar in the blood, making this the perfect dish for diabetics in particular.

Sous Chef Hasitha Dissanayake has whipped up Suppa de Barramundi- a bouillabaisse with tomato and basil grissini. Japanese Chef Chamila Lakshitha has created Grilled Barramundi with yuzu miso, cucumber salad and amasu sauce, while Japanese Sous Chef Erick Wijemanne has created Steamed Barramundi with netsuke sauce and vegetables.

“As an ingredient barramundi is incredibly versatile, and you can see that reflected in all the dishes that have been devised by the talented chefs at the Ramada,” says Shabir Ahamed, Key Account Manager of Round Island. “It’s very exciting for us to see our produce, which we nurture with a lot of care and attention, used to create dishes that sound exciting and taste so delicious.”

Round Island brings year around weekly harvests of barramundi with consistent quality and flavour from its commercial marine farm in Trincomalee. Oceanpick, Round Island’s holding company, offers a sustainable alternative solution to aggressive and harmful wild capture fisheries practices in Sri Lanka’s coastal towns in order to meet the increasing demands of the leisure industry. Thus Round Island’s barramundi is ethically farmed, available year around, and offers consistent quality and flavour every time.
