SINGAPORE – Media OutReach Newswire – 17 April 2024 – The Alliance to End Plastic Waste has published the first two in a series of ‘Solution Model’ playbooks, to improve the understanding of the many stakeholders across the plastic value chain about what is possible and what else is needed to drive systems change to end plastic waste in the environment and develop a circular economy for plastics.

National and regional governments, companies, and communities across the world face the issue of plastic pollution, for which there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The Alliance initiated the concept of Solution Models as an important component of its mission. Specifically, this involves the development, de-risking, and demonstration of solutions to address different sources of plastic waste in different situations. All of this aligns with the Alliance’s key goals to reduce unmanaged waste, capture value from waste, create social benefit, and mitigate climate impact.

Each solution is tested through Alliance projects. As the projects and solutions mature, the Alliance combines these findings with existing industry experience to develop Solution Models, which the Alliance hopes will further improve replication and scaling in collaboration with partners. It has worked in collaboration with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to create playbooks to support this. The first two playbooks are about Engaging Households in Segregated Municipal Waste Collection and Unlocking Value Through Basic Manual Sorting of Municipal Waste.

The first addresses household waste segregation which can significantly improve the volume and quality of material collected for recycling, while reducing sorting costs and decreasing landfill disposal. The playbook maps the steps Alliance project partners have taken to encourage households to separate the waste ‘at source’, in projects implemented in Argentina, China, India, and Indonesia.

The second playbook highlights the improved value recovery of plastic waste for recycling, including the use of simple and low-cost equipment to improve the ergonomics and speed of basic manual sorting. The Solution Model expressed in this playbook is particularly relevant to countries which have limited collection and treatment infrastructure, or those with early-stage recycling systems. Alliance projects that underpin this Solution Model can be found in Brazil, China, Indonesia, and Kenya.

In essence, the playbooks describe the challenges presented by the activities of each solution, how they were addressed in the projects, the lessons the Alliance has learnt, and its successes. They also record the enabling conditions necessary to implement the solutions, from policy levers to ecosystem conditions, business models, and innovation. The Alliance and BCG will continue to collaborate and, where applicable, update these playbooks as the solutions are strengthened.

The Alliance hopes that the playbooks will encourage other organisations to scale and replicate these solutions, taking on the lessons the Alliance has learnt and the identified critical success factors. This will enable acceleration of the common interest to prevent plastic waste from entering the environment.

Jacob Duer, President and CEO at the Alliance, said, “There is a need for solutions that are environmentally beneficial, socially responsible, and economically viable; and therefore, replicable and scalable if we are to advance the transition into a circular economy for plastics.”

“The plastic waste challenge is complex and requires a systems evolution from the current take-make-dispose model to a circular one that encourages reuse and recycle, alongside a range of other solutions required to address plastic pollution. To encourage this, we need investments and solutions that improve waste management, support behaviour change, and promote innovation.”

“We have not wavered in our aspiration to drive the systems change necessary to achieve full plastics circularity. This is a journey no organisation can approach alone, nor is there a silver bullet. We are calling for like-minded partners from across the public and private spheres to collaborate with us in furthering the development, strengthening, and implementation of current and future Solution Models.”

Marc Schmidt, Managing Director and Partner at BCG, Singapore, said, “The leakage of plastic waste into the environment is a critical issue that urgently needs tackling by working together with a wide range of stakeholders. We understand this is a big challenge.”

“We believe in creating practical, instructional solutions that can be easily implemented locally, tailored to the specific needs and context of a community dealing with plastic or waste issues. By scaling and replicating these solutions, we increase their impact significantly. We encourage local project developers to use these playbooks as a foundation and further develop and implement them.”

An in-depth introduction to the concept of Solution Models accompanied by a framework for documenting solutions can be found in a whitepaper published alongside the first two playbooks. Additional Solution Model playbooks are scheduled for release later in the year.

Calleo is proud to celebrate 14 years of helping businesses accelerate their pathway to success by providing them with tailored B2B information solutions.

“Since our launch in 2010, Calleo has been helping businesses gain the competitive edge and empower their growth strategies by providing them with high-quality, curated market intelligence services,” says Calleo founder and managing director, Andrew Dean. “We help bridge the B2B intelligence gap so that teams have all the information they need at their fingertips to ensure they make smart, intelligence-driven decisions.”

Calleo’s ongoing growth and success underscore its key understanding of the pivotal role that intelligence plays in supporting overall business strategy and in enhancing vital growth-related functions such as marketing, business development, product management, research and strategic planning.

 Understanding market dynamics

The birth of Calleo was sparked by Andrew’s recognition of the absence of consistent, accessible market intelligence for businesses, in a range of B2B sectors, including business, financial, consumer and technology services.

The business name, Calleo, is inspired by the Latin term for “knowledge through experience”. “I believe that gaining ‘knowledge and understanding through experience’ goes beyond observation – it’s about comprehending market dynamics, competitor strategies and customer needs,” says Andrew. “It’s not just about what you know but how you integrate and apply that knowledge to drive innovation and navigate the complexities of the B2B landscape.”

Delivering success

The success of Calleo’s vision is evident in the growth of the company, the diversity of the industries Calleo now serves, and the extent of the company’s clients, both locally and internationally.

It is the Calleo teams’ commitment to being truly invested in their clients’ success and tailoring their market intelligence information services to help fuel smarter decision making for all key members of the business that set them apart.

“We take the time to get to know a client’s business and its needs to ensure the right information is being gathered,” says Andrew. “We delve into markets, industries, companies, competitors, potential partners, industry influencers and trends to provide pivotal insights that help shape and fuel marketing decisions, inform growth opportunities and shape business development and strategy. It is hugely satisfying to see the positive impact these insights provide to CEOs and their management teams as they utilise this information to chart their pathway to growth.”

Calleo now provides its services to clients throughout Africa, Europe and the Middle East, covering regional and global developments. These services cover a wide range of industries, including banking and payments, financial services, retail and e-commerce, FMCG, manufacturing and distribution, supply chain and logistics, consulting and professional services, corporate responsibility and sustainable finance, as well as information systems and digital technology.

The country launched a series of global consumption events on Saturday at the fourth China International Consumer Products Expo in the island province known for its offshore duty-free shopping and free trade port policies.

Lasting from April 13 to 18, the expo themed “Share Open Opportunities, Co-create a Better Life” will host over 4,000 brands from 71 countries and regions, showcasing their novel and upmarket products for global consumers.

In addition to the main venue at the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center in Haikou, the provincial capital, three sub-venues regarding sailboats and yachts, duty-free shopping and international health have been set up in Haikou and Boao. The total indoor exhibition area is expected to reach 128,000 square meters, surpassing its previous editions.

More than 300 themed activities and featured activities such as new product releases will also be carried out.

‘Over the past three years, the scale, quality and influence of the expo have been continuously improved’, said Peng Qinghua, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, at the launch ceremony.

He added, ‘The expo has become the largest consumer products exhibition in the Asia-Pacific region, a gathering place for global consumer products and a vane for the consumer market, becoming a name card for the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port.’

Feng Fei, secretary of the Hainan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, said from this year, the expo will be held in Hainan from April 13 to 18 every year to better facilitate the arrangements of participants.

Over 300 themed activities such as new product releases will be carried out at the China International Consumer Products Expo 2024.

In addition, the quality of the exhibitions is improving. Especially, more attention has been paid to the marketization, internationalization and specialization of the exhibitions.

Ireland is the guest of honor at this year’s expo, with a dedicated exhibition venue showing the country’s scientific and technological innovation, education, investment, tourism and culture.

“China is our largest trading partner in the Asia Pacific. Many of our companies will be represented at the Hainan consumer products expo,” Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheal Martin said in a congratulatory letter to the expo, adding that international expos like this one give Irish producers an important and direct platform to promote their high-quality produce.

Ann Derwin, Ireland’s ambassador to China, said the economic and trade exchanges between the two countries are strong.

In 2022, the total bilateral trade reached over 45 billion euros, a 28 percent year-on-year increase, she said.

“Free Trade Zones, such as Hainan Free Trade Port, are an important element and driver of this system as they allow greater freedom and incentives to companies wishing to trade globally,” she added.

Israel Alexander Assa, Estée Lauder Companies Travel Retail Global President, said that Hainan has made significant progress in developing its duty-free sector in recent years, with improvements in shopping policy and retail infrastructure and the company remains optimistic about the sector’s long term future.

In the first two months of this year, retail sales of consumer goods totaled 8.1 trillion yuan (about 1.14 trillion U.S. dollars), an increase of 5.5 percent year on year.

“This fully reflects the strong resilience and vitality of China’s consumer market, and also lays a foundation for stable consumption throughout the year,” said Vice Minister of Commerce Sheng Qiuping.
