Sri Lanka –United Nations Friendship Organisation (SUNFO) has launched “SUNFO Global Village” concept in the year 2000 during the beginning of Millennium Development Goals MDG Era.(2000-2015). A special ceremony has arranged by SUNFO at BMICH, Colombo on Saturday 18 February, 2017 to introduce new developments of the SUNFO Global village concept in Sustainable Development Goals SDG era (2016-2030).
One of the main objective of SUNFO is promoting global cooperation by developing friendship, social and cultural understanding between people of Sri Lanka and other friendly nations in the world. The GLOBAL VILLAGE is a unique initiative of SUNFO in this regard specially focusing youth. Under this programme;
Firstly establishing Youth Friendship Forums for 193 UN Member Nations in year 2017 based in schools and other educational Institutions and thereafter developing links with that Forums and the relevant country. Secondly selecting students as “Youth Goodwill Ambassadors” for 193 Nations and conducting a Model United Nations Friendship Assembly in early 2018. Thirdly building a permanent Global Village in Sri Lanka with cultural centers of various countries. Selected schools already established such forums will be recognized at this ceremony.
SUNFO has already constructed and commissioned Mahatma Gandhi Non-violence Statue with a monument symbolizing 11 world major religions in one location at Lunawa, Moratuwa for inter-religious peace and harmony. During this ceremony new proposed concept of Nelson Mandela monument will be declare in the first time in Sri Lanka.
SUNFO committed for promoting volunteerism. Exceptional Youth Volunteers served in SUNFO in the year 2016 will be receiving Excellence Volunteer Service Awards on the day. Further new driving force of SUNFO for the year 2017; SUN Force Official Volunteer brigades will be declared at the ceremony for different sectors such as Environment, Child Welfare, Youth Development, Media, Sustainable Development Goals etc,
Cross section of Guests from Ministries, United Nations, Diplomats, Civil Society has been invited for this ceremony. SUNFO Officials Prof. Dr. Sir Lakshman Madurasinghe, Peace Ambassador Dr. Sir Deshapriya S.Wijetunge, Dr.Sir Romesh Jayasinghe and Charted Architect Ranga Soysa will do key presentations. Many youth leaders who are heading SUN Force Official Brigades also presenting their action plans to the audience.
