A tournament dedicated to late Rukmini Kodagoda

30th March 2016, Colombo; Sri Lanka Junior Match Play Golf Championship for the Rukmini Kodagoda Trophy is once again set to be held at the Royal Colombo Golf Club from 18 to 21 April 2016. Inaugurated in 2014, this annual tournament will be sponsored by Perera & Sons Bakers Ltd the family company of the late Rukmini Kodagoda, for the third consecutive year. The prestigious tournaments scheduled for the year and popular given the match play format which is one of a kind, will award the winner of the overall championship to carry away the Rukmini Kodagoda Challenge trophy while the qualifying medal round of the championship would be a designated round for national junior ranking for the year 2016,which stands as a recent introduction.

“We are likely to see new talent blossom among the juniors who show aptitude for match play format.” commented Gihan Perera CEO/Managing Director of Perera and Sons Bakers Ltd.

The Sri Lanka Gold Union is focusedin developing the young pool of golfers below 14 years, hence sub segmenting the pool between Bronze and Copper division. The tournament will be played over four days and will comprise of four age groups as follows; 15-17 years (Overall/Gold Division), 12-14 years (Silver Division), 10 -11years (Bronze Division) and 9 years and under (Copper Division). The manner of play would be based on a qualifying stroke play round whereby the best eight qualify to play, match play knock out. There would be many prizes on offer such as best gross score on qualifying round and plate winner for non-qualifiers on day two best gross score.

Last year’s divisional winners were: Gold Division – Prashan Peiris, Silver Division – Taniya Balasuriya, Bronze Division – Levon Niyarepola and Copper Division – Yanik Kumara. This year we are likely to see stiff competition from Armand Flamer Caldera, D. Dhanranjan, S. Flamin, Januka Dilshan, Tien Kapilasena, Nirekh Tejwani and Sathsara Dilshan in their respective age group categories.

Mr. Perera further stated, “P&S is committed to help develop the game of golf and tennis, especially to give an opportunity to the juniors from the outstations, and believe that there is a lot of hidden talent out of Colombo, which needs to be unearthed through events such as these.”

The junior match play championship is a fitting tribute to Rukmini Kodagoda, who won the Sri Lanka Amateur Championship in 1979 and several other club tournaments. Ruki as she was popularly known established herself as one of Sri Lanka’s talented sports women having won national titles and represented Sri Lanka in both tennis and golf. She also held the prestigious position of Chairman Sri Lanka Ladies Golf Union in 1990 and 1991 and Captain of the Ladies Section of the Royal Colombo Golf Club.

Colombo March 31st 2016: Sri Lanka’s largest marketplace, today announced that its jobs category has seen exponential growth in numbers of job seekers, just three months after it announced a complete revamp of its jobs category on the site.

Late last year completed a total overhaul of its job category and added new features to the site including the ability to upload CVs and commenced a massive drive to improve on the quality and profile of the jobs advertised. Post the company’s efforts, it now reports, the response from job seekers to vacancies posted on have increase ed by as much as five times, boasting an average of 2,000 vacancy ads posted per month with 50,000 job seekers responding to these ads per month. This clearly establishes as the leading online job vacancy portal.

In a bid to add greater authenticity to the vacancies posted and to eliminate spam advertisements in the job category, a very nominal fee is now charged when posting vacancies. This move has been widely hailed by the advertisers themselves as the credibility of the postings has now improved, leading to a better response to the ads. Dialog Axiata, Abans, Mas Active and Navaloka PLC are just a few of the many corporates, which now use regularly for their recruitment requirements.

Speaking about the direction in which the category is being driven, Ms. Erin Fernando – Category Assistant Manager, who heads the jobs section at said, “At present we are focusing on entry level to middle management vacancies as we see this as a high potential area with a lot of room for growth. As a whole, the number of job seekers looking for employment opportunities on online portals is rapidly increasing and we see this trend continuing into the foreseeable future. As such, we are working towards ensuring that we keep abreast with this trend while providing convenient and reliable job options for all Sri Lankans.”

The program structure of the “Baby Cheramy Mathru Sathkara” will include segment lectures on the following topics; “Early Childhood Development” by Mr. Chandrapala Dissanayake, Retired Deputy Director - Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, “ Breast Feeding/Baby Bathing & Massaging” by Mrs. Sudharma Uyanhewa, Nursing Officer - Ministry of Women and Child Affairs and a music therapy session by Mr. Jagath Watawala, Music Director, Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.

Commenting at the news conference, Mr. Rakesh Khosla, Director Marketing, Hemas Manufacturing (Pvt) Ltd., said “Being pregnant and having a baby is a joyful event, however it is also necessary to be as prepared as much as possible. That’s why we felt that it’s our duty to educate expectant mothers with proper pre and post pregnancy care through our Baby Cheramy Mathru Sathkara program.”

28th March 2016: The Minister of Higher Education and Highways Hon. Lakshman Kiriella visited the SLIIT campus in Malabe recently. Minister Kiriella was warmly welcomed by Professor Lalith Gamage, President SLIIT and Professor Lakshman Ratnayake, Chairman SLIIT. Together with the Senior Management of SLIIT, Minister Kiriella visited the Bentley research lab, classrooms and the IT, Business, Engineering and Hospitality faculties.

Commenting at this prestigious occasion, President of SLIIT, Professor Lalith Gamage, noted, “Minister Kiriella visited our campus, since it is recognized as a degree awarding institute by the University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Higher Education. SLIIT, the premier degree awarding higher education institution, in IT, Business and Engineering, strives to be a center of excellence to advance and disseminate knowledge, promote innovation and produce world class intellectuals to best serve the nation and beyond”.

Chairman SLIIT, Professor Lakshman Ratnayake added, “We are delighted to welcome the Higher Education and Highway Minister to show our state-of-the-art research facilities. We plan to expand our facility and provide students with a qualification which would be recognized globally and meet industry needs”.

Recently, SLIIT was recognized as the first degree awarding institute in the country to have its BSc (Hons) programme in Information Technology accredited by the Institute of Engineering and Technology. This accreditation has now paved the way for graduates to earn a Chartered Engineering status.

With a variety of academic options, ranging from IT, Business, Engineering, Hospitality and Architecture, SLIIT students have the opportunity to either complete the selected programme in Sri Lanka or transfer to a SLIIT partner university in UK, U.S.A, Canada or Australia.
