Leading export manufacturer of hand protection solutions and member of the Hayleys Group, Dipped Products PLC (DPL), announced the launch of its new ESG roadmap ‘DPL Pulse’.

‘DPL Pulse’ builds on the environmental and social consciousness already rooted within the organisation and aligns with the Hayleys Group’s long-term sustainability aspirations as outlined in the Hayleys Lifecode.

Amidst the disconcerting forecast made by UN climate scientists that July 2023 would be the hottest month on record, UN Secretary-General António Guterres declared that “the era of global warming has ended” and “the era of global boiling has arrived.” Although climate change is evident, to stop the worst, “we must turn a year of burning heat into a year of burning ambition,” he stated in a recent UN report.

At the company’s launch to its employees, DPL Managing Director Pushpika Janadheera said, “As an industry pioneer in sustainability, DPL Pulse formalises our efforts and initiatives with purpose and direction. This commitment comes at a critical time, with escalating impacts of global climate change and widening socio-economic disparities. As an organisation that relies primarily on agricultural materials, we have always been acutely aware of the impact of climate change on our business and communities and we are firmly committed to effecting positive change and building resilience.

“Economic growth should never undermine the balance between social and environmental progress; simply, there is no compromise. This ethos is deeply ingrained within the core of our management philosophy at Hayleys and DPL. We recognize the increasing call for sustainable sourcing across the world, a demand that compels us to protect not only the hands of millions but also the world they touch. Our gloves stand as a symbol of protection, encompassing both physical safety and concern for the environment and society,” Janadheera added.

DPL Pulse is built on the four key pillars of Planet, People, Products and Partnerships which ensure a holistic focus across the value chain. Aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Roadmap sets out clearly defined targets under each pillar, including a 20% reduction in carbon footprint (Scope 1 and 2).

As a result of DPL’s proactive approach in adopting renewable energy sources, 93% of its energy needs are currently met by biomass and other renewable sources. DPL has set forth plans to invest Rs. 1.6 billion in solar energy spanning all six manufacturing locations, with five based in Sri Lanka and one in Thailand. Additionally, DPL is committed to achieving a zero landfill goal as part of its ongoing efforts.

The recently established sports glove complex demonstrates the company’s environmental dedication. Striving for Platinum LEED certification, the facility is powered by 325 kWp solar rooftop panels and a Rain Water harvesting system with a capacity to serve 50% of its domestic usage in the rainy season.

DPL is targeting 30% sustainable water sourcing and 55% reuse of treated wastewater through its 2030 Roadmap. A water recycling project at its Hanwella site, is a shining example of sustainable water practices in action. Used discharged water undergoes treatment at an effluent treatment plant, and is subsequently reused, saving nearly 40% of the site’s water consumption.

Strengthening its competitive advantage in niche export markets, DPL aims to ensure that a minimum of 10% of its product portfolio is eco-rated and will increase the use of recycled raw materials in its manufacturing process by at least 30%. DPL also plans to increase the environmental screening of suppliers by 40%, in addition to doubling the beneficiaries of its CSR programmes.

  • Targets emerging opportunities in Middle-East, Africa, South America, Asia and Oceania
  • Invests in expanded manufacturing capacity, new product lines

Global integrated rubber glove manufacturer, Dipped Products PLC (DPL), is taking aim at lucrative emerging opportunities in new export markets, and high-value niche product segments, as part of an ‘innovation-led’ growth agenda spearheaded by new Managing Director, Pushpika Janadheera.

A member of Sri Lanka’s largest diversified conglomerate, the Hayleys Group, DPL currently offers a wide variety of specialised industrial, medical, and household gloves to customers in over 70 countries across the globe, including major retailers across the European Union and North America.

With more than 24 years of experience in working in industries connected to the rubber sector, Janadheera joined DPL in 2017 as Director Operations, where he oversaw many of DPL’s most transformative initiatives. This included significant manufacturing process optimization, total manufacturing capacity expansion, and a continuous focus on research and development leveraged towards development of innovative products.

During his tenure with DPL, Janadheera has also actively championed the company’s progressive approach to implementation and continuous enhancement of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards, and the company’s more recent alignment to Group-wide targets set out under the Hayleys Lifecode.

Over the coming year, Janadheera explained how DPL would be working to further consolidate its presence in established market strongholds, while exploring new opportunities in Oceania, Asia, the Middle-East, Africa, and South America.

“For nearly half a century, DPL has steadily moved up the value chain in hand protection. In that time, we have developed an unmatched reputation for quality, and served as a hub for high-level product innovation and best practices in sustainable manufacturing and an authentic commitment to ESG.

In addition to consolidating our reputation as a global leader in sustainable and ethical manufacturing, we are also committing substantial investments towards expansion of our production capacity. Similarly, we are exploring high value-niches like sports gloves, while accelerating our research and development programmes in order to create new innovations that will unlock even greater growth potential over the short-medium term,” he stated.

Janadheera added that DPL had already committed significant investments towards the establishment of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility for the production of sports gloves at the Biyagama BOI Investment Zone.

“Relative to our larger international competitors, DPL’s value proposition has always been built on delivering high value product innovations and unmatched service while maintaining a powerful commitment to ethical, sustainable manufacturing.

From everyday home and garden usage, to the specific needs of high-performance athletes, electrical engineers, cleaning professionals and medical practitioners; we understand the challenges people face around hand protection and provide solutions to meet all aspects of industry and life. We pride ourselves on providing a superior service for customers, through customized, flexible manufacturing. This potent blend of quality, customer-centric product development, and a total commitment to continuous elevation of ESG standards, is what we will leverage to capture new ground,” Janadheera said.

Together with DPL’s efforts to vertically integrate smallholder rubber farmers into its supply chain with a fair pricing mechanism, the company continues to pioneer a ‘grassroots’ led approach to Sri Lanka’s export development.

DPL’s outstanding commitment to sustainability is also being leveraged to support broader efforts to drive a 30% group-wide reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emission by 2030 and increase reliance on renewable energy.

International rubber gloves exporter Dipped Products PLC has distributed 30,000 rubber saplings in its sustained drive to support the future yield and income of its Monaragala farmer network.

The company’s distribution initiative began in March 2021, when DPL established its first rubber plant nursery and will culminate with one million rubber trees in total planted by 2025.

The rubber trees will begin to yield latex after five years of vegetative development and will generate a steady source of income to farmers for the next twenty to thirty years.

“Dipped Products PLC has always been committed to empowering its smallholder rubber farmer communities. Under Firstlight, we initiated our very own plant nursery to reinforce the rubber tapping potential of the community, which will help elevate their future income. Over the course of this year, we look to distribute 100,000 rubber saplings in Monaragala and 30,000 in Kegalle to support our loyal farmer networks in those regions,” said Dipped Products PLC Deputy Managing Director, Pushpika Janadheera.

Presently, smallholder rubber farmers produce approximately 65% of Sri Lanka’s annual rubber crop making the sustainable livelihood of rubber smallholder farmers a mission of national significance.

In addition to providing latex, full-grown rubber trees have the potential to sequester atmospheric carbon into biomass and soil, each reducing 20kg of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere every year. The sustainability of rubber lands also plays a key role in maintaining the balance of sensitive ecosystems, as a natural extension of Sri Lanka’s forest cover.

Established in 1976, Dipped Products is one of the leading non-medical rubber glove manufacturers in the world, and accounts for a 5 percent share of the global market. The company’s products now reach 70 countries. DPL Firstlight is the company’s unique, multi award-winning supplier development initiative which empowers over 6,000 farmers island-wide and contributes to their socio-economic progress.

Continuing to strengthen the farmer co-operative societies in its loyalty network, Dipped Products PLC (DPL) distributed rubber plants to smallholder farmers in the Monaragala District under its flagship sustainability initiative: DPL Firstlight.

The plants for the inaugural distribution were sourced from a new nursery established by DPL. Setting in motion plans to continue the initiative annually, the company will expand the facility to hold rubber plants by three fold by the end of the year.

“Through the DPL Firstlight initiative, we have worked towards empowering farmers in the district for over 12 years. We hope with the distribution of these plants, which will be planted across the district, to vastly improve the incomes of our farming communities while contributing to the annual rubber production of the country thereby reducing the need to import rubber.

Additionally, we have been extending the Firstlight campaign to farmers in Kegalle and Ratnapura districts. We are delighted to be strengthening our suppliers and hope this initiative will create a strong farming community with the potential for sustainable growth,” DPL Deputy Managing Director Pushpika Janadheera said.

Working closely with smallholder rubber farming communities in Monaragala, DPL has sought to support the essential contributions and value additions to the national rubber production while ensuring that farmers are guaranteed a fair price for field latex. The company further optimises the farmers’ ability to derive maximum yields by supplying essential agricultural inputs and equipment and complementing these efforts with education and awareness building.

Additionally, DPL has worked to resolve a wide range of issues impacting the smallholder farming communities by establishing programmes to enhance rural health, education, and recreational facilities. Recently, DPL also distributed fertiliser among DPL Loyalty Farmer societies across the Monaragala District under the Firstlight initiative.

Presently, smallholder farmers produce approximately 65% of Sri Lanka’s annual rubber crop, with the sector as a whole accounting for 0.2% of the nation’s total GDP, making the sustainable livelihood of rubber smallholder farmers a mission of national significance.

Similarly, rubber lands’ sustainability plays a pivotal role in maintaining the balance of sensitive ecosystems, given that rubber trees serve as a natural extension of Sri Lanka’s forest cover.

Established in 1976, Dipped Products is a global leader in protective hand-wear, serving close to 5% of global demand for natural and synthetic latex based medical, household and industrial gloves. Backed by a strong reputation for innovation, quality, and responsible manufacturing practices, its products now reach over 70 countries. With manufacturing facilities in Sri Lanka and Thailand, DPL is also one of the world’s leading manufacturers of ethical gloves, offering a holistic value proposition to all its partners across the value chain.

Established in 1878 by Chas. P. Hayley, as a trading house in Galle specialising in import and export, the Hayleys Group has since grown to serve as a centrepiece of the Sri Lankan economy while maintaining a global presence of manufacturing and marketing offices across five regions with business interests spanning a total of 16 sectors. Today it stands out as one of Sri Lanka’s most prominent success stories, having been the first listed Sri Lankan corporate to surpass US$ 1 billion in revenue and accounting for 3.4% of the nation’s total export earnings.

As part of its ongoing efforts to empower and uplift the livelihood of its farmer co-operative societies, Dipped Products PLC (DPL) distributed school bags to the children of 1,500 smallholder rubber farmers for the 10th consecutive year, under its flagship Firstlight CSR project.

This year’s distribution recorded the largest donation of school bags, which was nearly a two-fold increase from the previous year, bringing the total value of the distribution up to nearly Rs. 1 million.

Taking place at the Pinwatta Bodimalu Viharaya in Medagama, Monaragala, this latest distribution marks the Company’s continued efforts to support the smallholder rubber farming communities, by ensuring that their essential needs are looked after

“Especially in this time of economic uncertainty, with the nation facing significant challenges and hardships, it is truly touching to see the positive impact which we continue to have on the underprivileged smallholder rubber farming communities. We believe that programmes like Firstlight hold the key to enhancing the livelihoods of our 1500-strong rubber farmers, providing them with an improved quality of life, whilst paving the way to open up new opportunities and a brighter future. This is why, with the enthusiastic response we have received over the years, we have now also expanded this school bag distribution to include the District of Kegalle,” Dipped Products Deputy Managing Director, Pushpika Janadheera said.

Since its inception, the DPL Firstlight project has been assisting the smallholder rubber farmer communities to attain a sustainable livelihood with the provision of fertiliser to enhance the growth of their rubber plantations. In addition to this, DPL also conducts trainings for the latex farming communities, thereby enabling them to improve their knowledge and up skill, whilst enhancing their competitiveness in the local rubber industry.

Over the years, the DPL Firstlight initiative has continued to expand its farmer network, whilst providing assistance to several underprivileged latex farmers in the remote villages of Sri Lanka.

“I started supplying latex to DPL in 2020, and until then I was supplying rubber sheets to other companies. Up until now, none of the other companies I had supplied to, have provided me with the benefits which DPL has given. DPL not only offers me an extremely fair price for latex, but the Company has also provided my children, and the other famers’ children with school bags for the New Year,” said R.M Gunawardana, a farmer who joined the DPL Farmer Co-operative Society, last year.

Commencing operations in 1976, Dipped Products is a global leader in protective hand-wear, presently serving up to 5% of the global demand for natural and synthetic latex based medical, household and industrial gloves. Backed by a strong reputation for innovation, quality, and responsible manufacturing practices, the Company’s products now reach over 70 countries. In its ongoing commitment to the environment, Dipped Products PLC (DPL) donated gloves for the national beach cleaning programme conducted by the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA), in partnership with the Lions Club of Sri Lanka.

This contribution was in aid of the ‘National Marine Resources Conservation Week 2020’ declared by the Government with a focus on conserving the national marine resources all around the island.

The donation of gloves took place in the presence of Minister of Environment, Mahinda Amaraweera at the Central Environmental Authority recently. The event was coordinated and facilitated by the Lions Multiple District 306 Sri Lanka as part of their ‘Go Green with Lions’ initiative.

The programme will raise awareness on marine pollution and the conservation of marine resources in the country, while being a concerted community building programme focused on nurturing sustainable and mutually beneficial relationships with the communities.

As a globally renowned manufacturer and exporter of protective hand wear, DPL is acutely aware of its responsibility to the environment, and this initiative falls in line with its commitment to create a more sustainable future for the next generation.

“Sri Lanka is a country blessed with a vast coastline, fringed with beautiful golden beaches. Today, it is the pollution of these beaches and oceans due to human activities which has led to various environmental and socio-economic problems. For instance, the majority of marine pollution originates from waste which is discharged irresponsibly into waterways or coasts. Hence, educating the public on the significance of maintaining the marine environment and conserving marine resources is of utmost importance. Our teams across the DPL Group donated gloves towards this cause, and we are proud to support the communities in whatever way we can,” DPL Deputy Managing Director, Pushpika Janadheera said.

The donation is only one aspect of DPL’s commitment to promote environmental sustainability, with the Company’s pledge to CSR including tree planting, beach clean-ups, and fertiliser distributions to its smallholder rubber farmers.

Established in 1976, Dipped Products PLC is a global leader in hand protective wear, serving 5 percent of the global demand for natural and synthetic latex based medical, household and industrial gloves. With its products sold to over 70 countries globally, the Company has gained a solid reputation for its innovation, quality, and responsible manufacturing practices as one of the world’s leading manufacturers of ethical gloves. Backed by over four decades of extensive experience and technical expertise, DPL produces a continuous stream of high value, protective hand wear enabling them to be ranked among the world’s largest manufacturers in the hand protection industry.

Continuing to empower and uplift the livelihood of farmer co-operative societies in its loyalty network, Dipped Products PLC (DPL) invested Rs. 2.1 million towards the distribution of fertiliser for 1,500 smallholder rubber producers in the Monaragala District under its flagship sustainability initiative: DPL Firstlight.

A total of 90,000 Kg of fertiliser was distributed among 4 DPL Loyalty Farmer societies across the Monaragala District at the event organised for the ninth consecutive year.

“For over 12 years, DPL Firstlight has worked to empower smallholder rubber farmers in the Monaragala District. From the outset, we have sought to support their essential contributions and value additions to national rubber production while ensuring that they are guaranteed a fair price for field latex. Additionally, we have optimised their ability to derive maximum yields through the supply of essential agricultural inputs and equipment, and have complemented these efforts with education and awareness building.

“In this manner, we have been successfully able to enhance livelihoods at the grassroots of the Sri Lankan economy. Simultaneously, these initiatives have generated value at a national scale through the development of one of the country’s most essential export crops. Particularly at a time when our nation faces significant economic challenges owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, we believe that such social enterprise business models hold the key to sustainable prosperity for all Sri Lankans. Moving forward, we will also expand the DPL Firstlight initiative to farmers in the Kegalle District as well,” DPL Deputy Managing Director, Pushpika Janadheera said.

Presently, smallholder farmers produce approximately  65% of Sri Lanka’s annual rubber crop, with the sector as a whole accounting for 0.2% of the nation’s total GDP; making the sustainable livelihood of rubber smallholder farmers a mission of national significance.

Today, the rubber products manufacturing sector of the country needs around 135,000 metric tons of natural rubber per annum. However, the country is not able to produce this quantity of natural rubber, compelling the nation to import around 60,000  metric tons of natural rubber annually.

Therefore, from an economic perspective, value addition – through manufacturing operations like DPL – for domestic and export markets holds the potential to enhance foreign exchange earnings while creating greater opportunities for grassroots level employment and livelihood development.

Similarly, the sustainability of rubber lands play a pivotal role in maintaining the balance of sensitive ecosystems, given that rubber trees serve as a natural extension of Sri Lanka’s forest cover.

Hence, in addition to its direct support to smallholders, DPL Firstlight also places a strong emphasis on education and empowerment – for rubber farmers and the communities they reside in. This is accomplished through additional programmes focused on a wide range of issues impacting smallholders including the establishment and enhancement of rural health, and educational and recreational facilities.

Established in 1976, Dipped Products is a global leader in protective hand-wear, serving close to 5% of global demand for natural and synthetic latex based medical, household and industrial gloves.
