Harpic disinfectant toilet cleaner, a brand of globally renowned consumer goods conglomerate Reckitt, recently marked the world toilet day by renovating & upgrading the sanitation infrastructure of Meerigama Base Hospital. As a Base Hospital this serves a large catchment area of the public that sees 750 to 1000 people a day. The official handing over of the renovated facilities coincided with the world toilet day 2021 which fell on November 19 under the theme of “Harpic: Mission Wellbeing”.

Reckitt Sri Lanka, the distributor for Harpic locally, has partnered with local health authorities throughout the years to deliver similar support to empower the local healthcare sector. Since 2017 they have worked to refurbish toilets in peoples’ homes, helping about 150 families per annum and a total of 600+ families over the last 4 years. They also started a mobile bathroom initiative in 2015, which affects approximately 800,000 people a year.  their commitment towards public sanitary facilities does not end there. For the last 3 years they have conducted a sanitation program for the public bathrooms at Sri Pada which has provided facilities for 600,000 pilgrims.

Commenting on this initiative, Head of Marketing at Reckitt Sri Lanka Shaminda Perera noted: “As a brand in the hygiene space, we’re committed to ensuring health & wellbeing of all citizens; as such, aligning with this year’s theme & our organizational ethos, we are glad to have been part of this renovation project. We look forward to partaking in similar initiatives in the future collaborating with the Ministry of Healthcare and Indigenous Medical Services.”

Last year, Harpic renovated toilets at the Minuwangoda Base Hospital. They also donated mobile sanitation units to the Anuradhapura Base Hospital which was a Covid19 testing center; another benefit for the public.

Harpic is a global brand with a wide-spread presence in six continents. Inspired by a vision to create a world where people are healthier and live better, Reckitt, the parent company produces a popular range of health and hygiene products including Dettol, Lysol apart from Harpic. Harpic’s CSR efforts reiterate Reckitt’s commitment to cement its position as a socially, environmentally and financially responsible business enterprise.

Meanwhile Chanuka Perea, Brand Manager – Harpic at Reckitt Sri Lanka reminded Sri Lankans to practice good toilet hygiene especially in the ‘new normal’ to stay healthy; he noted that toilets are generally a breeding ground for disease-causing pathogens but this could be managed & mitigated with daily sanitization: “It is common knowledge that unclean toilets spread diseases; this is why Harpic is on a constant mission not just to donate and upgrade but also educate the public. Every individual who uses a toilet must follow proper etiquette for their own sake and others. This year’s theme sums up this message very well: “Harpic: Mission Wellbeing”. We intend to work closely with students and other segments of society to further socialize this message in the coming year through our various initiatives.”

10th October 2017 – Katana, Sri Lanka: The first set of 100 toilets commissiond by the Ministry of City Planning & Water together with Harpic was completed recently, providing clean sanitation facilities to over 30 households and one school in Katana.

In March, Harpic launched the ‘Harpic Suwa Jana Meheyuma; Mission Wellbeing’, in collaboration with the Ministry of City Planning & Water Supply to elevate the status of hygiene across households in Sri Lanka. The project sought to build 100 toilets in the Western province in the first phase, going up to 300 toilets across Sri Lanka at the completion of the project.

The students of David De Silva Vidyalaya in Peellawatta, Katunayake, with an 800-strong student population will also have access to a new washroom facility that promotes the concept of hygiene.

Hon. Sudarshani Fernandopulle, State Minister of City Planning and Water Supply, who has led the project since its inception said, “This is an overlooked area in Sri Lanka’s development drive. I am confident that we will be able to achieve our target to build 300 toilets during the next few months and provide clean sanitation facilities for well over 1,000 people.

It is estimated that nearly two percent of the population practice open defecation due to the lack of toilets, while a further two percent share a common toilet. The Ministry of City Planning and Water Supply has identified the need for nearly 180,000 toilets across Sri Lanka.

Harpic’s current efforts to build toilets is only the first step of a much bigger national project that hopes to address Sri Lanka’s sanitation issues that go deeper than the unclean toilet we see on the surface.

Commenting on the progress of the project Sri Lanka Commercial Director for Reckitt Benckiser, Sinclair Cruise said, “There is more that needs to be done across Sri Lanka to address the sanitation issue. This project is one of many initiatives we have undertaken in this area and we will continue to work on public spaces to improve the sanitation situation.”
