Hayleys Advantis, the transportation and logistics arm of the Hayleys Group, recently donated a pre-fabricated research laboratory in support of the scientists involved in the accelerated natural regeneration of mangroves at Anawilundawa. This project was completed under the first phase of the ‘Advantis Blue C’ programme, which was launched as a strategic sustainability initiative with the aim of conserving and restoring blue carbon ecosystems.

In collaboration with stakeholders, such as the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC), the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) and the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS), Advantis Blue C will help accelerate the vital regeneration of mangroves at the RAMSAR accredited wetland, Anawilundawa. Mangroves are a vital component in the replenishment of blue carbon resources as they store over ten times more carbon compared to terrestrial forests.

Led by Prof. Sevvandi Jayakody, Chair Professor at Wayamba University and Chairperson of the National Mangrove Expert Committee, the team handling scientific research at the site, is set to gather and study valuable topographical data, floral distribution, faunal habitations, hydrological models, and soil and water samples across the site. This study will lead to an improved understanding of how mangroves propagate and which areas or conditions are best suited for the seeds to take root and thrive.

“Effective mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions remains one of the key challenges in the international transportation and logistics industry. With the launch of Advantis Blue C, we believe that we are doing our part to mitigate this by lending our expertise,” said Ruwan Waidyaratne, Managing Director of Hayleys Advantis Limited.

Pre-fabricated and installed to minimise any construction-related impact on the environment, the new lab facility constructed by Advantis Engineering will also serve as a base of operations for international scientists and students hoping to study the mangrove system at Anawilundawa.

Additionally, Hayleys Advantis will also assist the research process by deploying its staff in the field to assist with the gathering of floral and faunal data while providing technical assistance to establish a database for all the scientific findings. This may lead to the compilation of information that can be later shared with the global scientific community.

“Our efforts to replenish Blue Carbon resources are a part of a global effort to better understand these vital ecosystems, threats faced, and necessary measures to create the conditions for nature to heal itself. It is important that we work with all stakeholders to conserve the environment. The data that we will be able to collect, thanks to the support of Hayleys Advantis, will serve as the foundation of local and global efforts to restore coastal ecosystems and effectively combat climate change,” stated Prof. Jayakody.

Group Director of Hayleys Advantis, Capt. Lasitha Cumaratunga explained, “With our involvement in marine operations, and our wealth of maritime knowledge and expertise, we took leadership to address this global challenge in alignment with our evolving ESG commitments under the ‘Hayleys Lifecode’. By partnering with key government and conservationist organisations, we aim to give life to our coastal and marine ecosystems, which will, in turn, enable exponential increases in carbon sequestration, potentially serving as a powerful offset to GHG emissions globally.”

Backed by the blue-chip multinational conglomerate Hayleys PLC, Hayleys Advantis is at the forefront of the logistics industry providing end-to-end solutions covering Integrated Logistics, Projects and Engineering, Marine and Energy, International Freight Management and Aviation. Showcasing the power of employee-led innovation, Hayleys Advantis Limited, the transportation and logistics arm of the Hayleys Group, concluded Advantis Ideastorm 2.0 – the second season of the ideation platform introduced in 2020 to boost innovative thinking across all levels of staff.

“Our leadership position in the Sri Lankan and regional transportation and logistics sector is built on the unmatched knowledge and expertise of the Advantis team and the unique culture of innovation that we have consistently nurtured. Particularly in the context of a historic economic downturn, our ability to harness our team’s creativity to deliver maximum value has been the bedrock of our continuing success. Therefore, we take great inspiration from the remarkably creative ideas that emerged during Advantis Ideastorm 2.0, and take this opportunity to congratulate our winning innovators, and look forward to putting their ideas into action,” Hayleys Advantis Managing Director Ruwan Waidyaratne said.

Advantis Ideastorm empowers employees to deploy out-of-the-box thinking to create and hone innovative solutions to real-world challenges. Similar to the previous cycle, the innovators of Advantis Ideastorm 2.0 were challenged with developing strategic ideas under two categories: Revenue Generation and Service Optimisation.

In the lead-up to the grand finale, many new initiatives were introduced this season to drive innovative thinking. An ‘innovation hour’ was declared every Friday, solely dedicated to ideation. The company also hosted an inspirational movie night with a special knowledge-sharing session featuring guest speaker Heminda Jayaweera, an eminent innovator and entrepreneur, to inspire ingenuity and creativity among staff. By the end of the ideation phase, over 50 innovative proposals were submitted for evaluation.

Participants were given one month to submit comprehensive proposals, which were evaluated by two preliminary judging rounds by the Heads of Advantis Business and Service Units, and the Advantis Group Management Committee (GMC), respectively. Notably, this year’s judging panel was also expanded to infuse fresh youth-led perspectives into the evaluation process and further elevate the creativity of the final proposals.

Moreover, the finalists of the top 15 teams were privy to a one-day boot camp conducted by sought-after start-up mentor and external consultant for Advantis Ideastorm, Dr Nirmal De Silva. The session took a deep dive into the submission process and studied the validation of assumptions made while fine-tuning the pitches further.

Held at the Kingsbury Hotel, the Advantis Ideastorm grand finale closely resembles the well-known reality television series for aspiring entrepreneurs, Shark Tank. Each team was given 10 minutes to pitch their ideas, with judges given five minutes to clarify their positions.

“The ideas this season are far more sophisticated and ambitious. This speaks to our employees’ passion and unmatched dedication and further validates our commitment to nurturing a culture of innovation across our organisation,” emphasised Virendra Perera, Chief Strategy Officer of Hayleys Advantis Limited.

This season’s prestigious Gold Award was won by Team Advantis Ships which included Jeevaka Gunadheera, Capt. Mahendra Ranatunga, Lilip Sanjeewa, Maazud Marzook and Surindha De Abrew for an innovative shipping solution. The Silver Award was won by Team Advantis 3PL Plus, comprised of Isuru Jayasooriya, Sagara Perera, Ushan Rathnayake, Dilmi Fernando and Dayal Sandanayake. Meanwhile, the Bronze Award was won by Team Advantis 3PL Plus, which included Malaka Yattigala, Nayani Rathnasiri, Kasun Bandara, Pradeep Alwis and Lahiru Udawatta. Merit Awards were also presented to six teams.

“Advantis Ideastorm 2.0 encouraged us to identify and capture opportunities for innovation. It has been a challenging process, but it has also been a unique and empowering one for the entire team to be given the space to think creatively and systematically collaborate towards solving real-world challenges,” said the Leader of the Gold Award-winning team, Jeevaka Gunadheera.

Hayleys Advantis Limited recently completed the second programme in their capacity building initiative under the theme ‘Inspiring Logistics in Sri Lanka’. The programme was launched earlier this year to uplift the local logistics sector by bridging the gap between academic qualifications and corporate requirements. The company is working towards developing a competent, productive and skilled workforce to uplift trade standards and improve the global competitiveness of Sri Lanka.

The latest programme involved a field visit to the Port of Colombo and gave the opportunity for 60 students from the University of Moratuwa and Kothalawala Defense University to observe and learn first-hand how the port operates. Participants were briefed on standard operations at the port, ROI, procedures, planned future developments and were also given an operational tour of the port by Upul Jayatissa, Chief Manager – Marketing & Business Development, and Chitral Jayawarna, Senior Manager – Marketing & Business Development, Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

Commenting on the programme, Upul Jayatissa said, “We are delighted to be a part of this initiative that strives to shape the next generation of skilled logisticians and take this sector to the next level. Due to Sri Lanka’s strategic geographical positioning investment in this sector is imperative, if we are to take full advantage of every opportunity afforded to us and this should begin with talent development. This also fits in with the Government’s plans to make Sri Lanka a key logistics hub in the region.”

Speaking about the event, Ruwan Waidyaratne, Managing Director of Hayleys Advantis, said, “There is great potential for the logistics sector to contribute further towards the transformation of the country. This potential can be achieved through strategic investments in developing the skills necessary to navigate and capitalize on the future of the industry. We are thankful to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority for providing great insight into how the Port of Colombo functions and helping shape the minds of tomorrow. This programme looks to not only teach but to inspire the next generation of logisticians.”

This was the second in a series of sessions planned to share knowledge and build capacity towards energizing the logistics industry in Sri Lanka, with many more workshops, internship programmes and discussions scheduled to take place throughout the rest of the year. These will be conducted free of charge for graduates, undergraduates and employees related to the industry in the hope of uplifting the logistics sphere in Sri Lanka.
