Collaboration to embed Visa payments onto SAP’s ecosystem of solutions for enterprises to pay suppliers seamlessly, even if they do not accept card payments

Singapore, 28 June 2023 – Visa today announced it has entered into a collaboration with SAP to streamline and simplify business-to-business (B2B) payments for enterprises, from businesses small to big, to government agencies and non-profit organisations. The collaboration, led out of Asia Pacific, marks the first time Visa, the world’s leading company in digital payments, and SAP, one of the world’s market leaders in enterprise application software, join forces to bring to life an innovation to embed payments into the SAP ecosystem through SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP).

Around 99 per cent of the world’s largest companies are SAP customers.[1] This collaboration sets the stage for Visa and SAP to explore embedded finance in the B2B market, helping integrate a financial journey into business operations. Visa estimates that opportunities to digitise B2B payment flows today represent more than $50 trillion across Asia Pacific.[2]

For Visa, the move is in line with its strategy to increase its footprint in the B2B space, supporting broader money movement flows between individuals, businesses and governments, beyond consumer payments. This includes accounts receivable and payable flows, corporate payments with card-based solutions and cross-border payments.

“The movement of money is becoming increasingly digital, but the bulk of transformation has been focused on the consumer space,” Stephen Karpin, Regional President of Asia Pacific, Visa, said.  “There is an urgent need to modernise the way enterprises pay and enhance the B2B payment experience. Our collaboration with SAP is an exciting step in making B2B payments simpler and more intuitive as organisations can make payments immediately on SAP platforms with their Visa corporate cards, instead of having to leave their existing enterprise ecosystem and to navigate the different payment methods that their vendors accept. B2B payments needs to be intuitive, speedy and fuss-free, so organisations can spend time and resources on other aspects of their businesses.”

For SAP, this move is meant to enhance its customers’ experience in using SAP’s software to run their businesses. Running on SAP BTP, the B2B payment services will offer convenient Visa payment services to SAP customers. Injecting more automation into payments – which marks the last mile of procurement – will help enterprises drive further efficiency in their purchasing journey as they make payments securely within a few clicks.

“Our collaboration with Visa endeavours to streamline and simplify the B2B payment process and drive further efficiencies for our joint customers. Embedding Visa payment into the SAP ecosystem aims to scale and accelerate digital commerce; together empowering enterprises, from small businesses to government agencies and non-profit organisations, to make secure payments with just a few clicks, transforming the last mile of procurement,” said Paul Marriott, President of SAP Asia Pacific Japan.

The embedded finance solution will be offered initially to SAP customers in Australia, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, with plans to roll out across other markets in the region.

Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) is an innovation platform optimised for SAP applications in the cloud that brings together application development and automation, data and analytics, integration, and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities into one unified environment. Through this new collaboration, Visa and SAP will help bridge working capital gaps in the supply chain. Under its suite of Commercial & Money Movement Solutions, Visa will deliver capabilities through SAP BTP to route commercial payments to all suppliers, whether they accept card payments or not. This solution will help businesses who are Visa cardholders make payments seamlessly and utilise their cardholder benefits, be it domestically or cross-border.

The collaboration will also help to further digitise and speed up B2B payments across Asia Pacific’s supply chains. Many businesses in Asia Pacific, especially smaller ones that tend to lack the resources to digitalise B2B payment acceptance, do not yet accept commercial card payments. It can be challenging for card-enabled businesses to pay digitally as they resort to traditional, manual and time-consuming payment methods such as cash and cheques. It also affects the cash flow for both payers and suppliers as transactions via traditional payment methods tend to take a longer time to process and complete.

In appreciation of its continuous streak towards embracing a journey of sustained digital transformation, A Baur & Co. (Pvt.) Ltd., also known as Baurs, one of the leading diversified corporate in the country, recently won the Finance Transformation Award at the Dare to Dream Awards 2023 Sri Lanka Edition, powered by SAP in partnership with John Keells IT and knowledge partner, EY.

The award was part of the SAP Special Recognition of the Year in recognition of Baurs’ track record of demonstrable innovation, rapid transition and success in its enterprise-wide transformation efforts through adopting various SAP technologies and solutions.

In 2021, Baurs completed a major milestone by migrating to SAP S/4 HANA 2020 on cloud deployment with SAP Analytics Cloud Live reporting, making it the first company in Sri Lanka to do so at that time. This included cloud migration, technical migration with integration platform conversion, S/4 HANA migration with business process re-engineering, adaptation of SAP Mobility Platform, and the deployment of SAP Analytics Cloud.

This paved way to initiate project RISE ABC with the aim of further integrating the SAP landscape and business processes of Baurs while expanding the company’s digital footprint and overall value proposition through optimizing its operational processes and deploying timely innovative solutions.

The project kicked off during the height of the unprecedented pandemic, forcing the project to be implemented in an offline, phase-wide execution approach with geographically dispersed stakeholders both across Sri Lanka and globally. Despite the various constraints posed, Baurs was able to successfully complete it within the projected timeline and budget, overcoming all other business challenges as well.

The outcome of this to Baurs were numerous, including process simplification and automations and adhering to best practices in inventory management including digitalized procurement process, revamping existing financial processes with the new features of S/4 HANA Finance & Controlling, all of which resulted in increased agility and higher availability, and better productivity, security and compliance.

It also established the digital core with S/4 HANA which has inbuilt AI, ML capabilities, enriched with a vast solution stack with latest technological disruptions such as IOT, RPA and blockchain, giving Baurs the edge to utilize them in the near future.

Baurs was also one of the first to embrace digital transition back in 1982, following IBM’s entry into Sri Lanka. Since then, it has always challenged the status quo. It has continued to adapt to the evolving technological changes, embracing cyber security and disaster recovery measures, machine learning, artificial intelligence, IoT among others. The company also took the lead in sales force automation which goes beyond than mere mobility, data and analytics, to comprehensively integrate the various businesses and channels.

Net profit improves by 23% to Rs 1.7 billion with higher productivity reducing impact of rising raw material costs

Improved demand from the region and enhanced capacity have helped Teejay Lanka PLC to post Group revenue of Rs 36.1 billion for the nine months ending 31st December 2021 and record strong topline growth of 64% over the corresponding period of the previous year.

A period described by Chairman Mr Bill Lam as less disrupted by COVID-19 than in 2020, the nine months saw Teejay Lanka counter increases in raw material prices with enhanced productivity to achieve gross profit of Rs 3.2 billion and profit after tax of Rs 1.7 billion, an improvement of 23%.

In the three months ending 31st December 2021 Teejay Lanka increased revenue by 53% to Rs 13 billion, but with raw material costs rising ahead of the corresponding product price increases, profit after tax for the quarter declined by 5% to Rs 738 million.

The Group has continued its strong balance sheet, to end the nine months reviewed with a cash balance of Rs 4.4 billion.

Elaborating on the results for the period, Mr Lam said the increases in raw material costs was the biggest challenge faced by the Group with increases in the prices of yarn, energy, freight, dyes, chemicals and auxiliaries reducing margins. However, the operational excellence initiatives implemented over the past two years helped mitigate the impact to some extent.

Teejay Lanka CEO Mr Pubudu De Silva said the Group remains confident of maintaining growth and delivering value to shareholders on a continuous basis, with the anticipated benefits of an integrated Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution with the implementation of SAP S4 HANA, to take advantage of the expansion across the Group.

Among these expansions is a US$ 26 million development at Teejay India which is scheduled to come on stream from February 2022 and will increase production by 20 tons a day by September this year, Mr De Silva said.

Teejay Lanka was the first textile manufacturer in Sri Lanka to receive membership of the US Cotton Trust Protocol, and is a public quoted company with 40 per cent public ownership. The company is backed by Sri Lanka’s largest apparel exporter Brandix Lanka which has a 32 per cent stake. Pacific Textiles of Hong Kong whose key shareholder is the Tokyo Stock Exchange listed Toray Industries Inc., owns 27 per cent of Teejay Lanka.

The Company has been adjudged the Best Textile Exporter in Sri Lanka at the Presidential Export Awards presented by the Export Development Board (EDB) and has been named among the 100 Most Respected Companies in Sri Lanka by LMD.

An ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and OHSAS 18001:2007 compliant company and the first in the industry to develop green fabric, Teejay has been listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) since 2011 and was included in the S&P Top 20 Index in Sri Lanka. The Company has also been named among the Forbes ‘200 Best under a Billion in Asia’ and been recognised as the ‘International Textile Firm of the Year’ and the ‘International Dyer and Finisher’ by World Textile Institute, London.
