In the rare event that competitors join hands, the most outstanding evolution unfolds. Such is the story of XpressJobs and MyJobs.lk, now united as one company marking a most significant turning point in the recruitment platforms in Sri Lanka. The acquisition has made XpressJobs the biggest player in the online recruitment field, adding to its renown as the most technologically advanced.

The merger has an interesting and uplifting backstory. Somewhere in 2018, Dr. Oshadie Korale, COO of XpressJobs picks up the phone almost on a whim and invites Sanjeewa Rajapakshe, CEO of Emerging Media (parent company of MyJobs.lk) and his team for coffee and a discussion. XpressJobs had been enjoying a 60% growth rate at the time, and its innovative approaches with recruitment tech – introducing smart filtering, CV less recruitment, Application tracking system, Statistic Dashboard, online testing, branch recruitment etc., – had marked it out as a trendsetter in the market. The coffee meeting ends on a positive note with discussions started on an Angel investment, which comes to fruition in 2020 with Emerging Media investing 100 million LKR for 25% stake in XpressJobs.

At the time of discussions in 2018, both XpressJobs and MyJobs.lk had two different market shares; While MyJobs.lk, started in 2014 was focused on filling shopfloor and industrial positions with a simpler set up, XpressJobs, started in late 2015 was focused on developing home-grown recruitment technology such as aforementioned  smart filtering, CV less recruitment etc., catering to a more selective range of mostly white collar jobs.

In 2017, MyJobs.lk entered into partnership with Mobitel, functioning as a value added service for Mobitel’s vast customer base. The partnership enabled MyJobs.lk to market its brand for this database. Powered by Mobitel, the brand identity of MyJobs.lk took on a stronger dimension. Post 2018, the economic climate that led to the decline of many businesses starting with the Easter attacks and COVID 1st and 2nd waves, did not present a challenge for XpressJobs as built into its platform were all of the recruitment tech necessary to ride the massive waves of the ‘new norm’. As working from home became the most if only viable option left for many companies, and remote work and recruitment became the mainstay of businesses, the already existing features such as filtering based on vaccination status, paperless hiring that enabled HR in remote shortlisting candidates etc ensured XpressJobs’ dominance in the market and enabled it to have a higher market share compared to old school competitors.

In 2020 XpressJobs requested to absorb the MyJobs.lk brand but it was answered with a “No” as Emerging Media felt strongly that there was space in the market for both brands. They do come into an agreement of allowing the best performer a takeover in future. Thus the friendly rivalry between the two companies continues.

In 2022, with a year-over-year growth rate of 115% and the financial backing of the 100 million LKR investment it is evident that XpressJobs is in optimum performance. Therefore it has become an obvious strategic next step for XpressJobs to acquire MyJobs.lk and combine the resources to increase its market share in the country. With the takeover, the company now has a massive merged CV database of 520,000 serving over 6600 local and international clients. It has processed over 2.5 million applications to date. “We’re very much open to learning from our competitors. We’re open to adapting, evolving and innovating. It is crucial to stay current in this market.” is the upbeat and simple response of COO Dr. Oshadie Korale, to this massive leap the company has made. The users and clients of XpressJobs and MyJobs.lk now enjoy the vast benefits of their combined resources, steered expertly by XpressJobs’ innovation.

Sri Lankan startups are getting help for one of the biggest issues that have troubled them:
attracting talent that would love the challenges of a startup. The Information and
Communication Technology Agency (ICTA), is the apex Government body who is mandated
to drive the Digital Transformation of the country partnered with XpressJobs, Sri Lanka’s
market trendsetter for recruitment technology, to support and transform the recruitment
process for the Sri Lankan startup ecosystem.

XpressJobs and ICTA are collaborating via ICTA’s Startup SL, the national online platform
for product-based startups. Startup SL is on a mission to support Sri Lankan tech
entrepreneurs by connecting them to other startups, mentors, investors, and incubators. The
purpose of the partnership is twofold: To help the country’s startups improve their
recruitment strategy and to provide ICTA with data to analyse how recruitment works in the
startup ecosystem.

“XpressJobs is the only job portal in Sri Lanka that provides companies and candidates with
data associated with the recruitment process. We provide transparency to job seekers on the
stage of their job application to help them save time. For companies, we provide tailor-made
technology such as filtering, cv-less applicant tracking, and recruitment by branches. We are
a startup ourselves who have been in recruitment technology for 6 years, so we’re uniquely
qualified to assist and contribute to the community.” Stated by Dr. Oshadie Korale, COO,
XpressJobs.

XpressJobs has implemented the partnership in three phases.
● Phase 1: Providing special recognition for Startup SL members by creating a
separate website page to recruit via XpressJobs and adding the logo of Startup SL
next to jobs posted by them. This gives them an added layer of credibility by
displaying their association with ICTA and Startup SL.

● Phase 2: Facilitating Information flow between startups who recruit via XpressJobs
and ICTA/Startup SL. XpressJobs started asking startups who used their website
whether they were one of the 606 members of Startup SL. Startups who said no were
encouraged to join the program and directed to ICTA if they wished to sign up.
XpressJobs also offers 20% off selected packages to companies who become
Startup SL members as an incentive.
● Phase 3: Sharing non-sensitive and non-confidential statistics from the XpressJobs
analytics dashboard with ICTA. This is to provide ICTA insights on the sectors,
designations, and job types startups are recruiting for. This in turn helps ICTA identify

issues startups are facing with recruitment. XpressJobs has discovered that 40% of
startup job openings are for software developers.

“Partnering with XpressJobs has enabled us to gain insights into the workforce dynamics of
the startup ecosystem which will further help us to take a data-driven approach to ecosystem
development, mentioned by Sachindra Samararatne, Director – Startup Ecosystem
Development, ICTA.
The following solutions could serve as a guide for ICTA to help the recruitment process of
the Sri Lankan startup ecosystem, as startups may not be thinking of these on their own.
● Offer revenue sharing and equity sharing when recruiting. Most startups are
recruiting a cofounder as their first hire. They are also not in a position to offer high
salaries and perks. Therefore, offering equity or revenue can help attract suitable
candidates for CEO and cofounder positions. This could also be extended to other
hires as well.
● Highlight the unique benefits candidates will get from working at a startup in their
recruitment advertisements: opportunities to learn all aspects of business, passionate
colleagues, and increased job responsibilities at the start of your career
● Using recruitment technology as part of their hiring process. As most of the startup
recruitment is done by the CEO or a co-founder, than an HR team, having such
technology at hand helps avoid errors and streamline the process. XpressJobs offers
a discount for Startup SL members so that they can take advantage of recruitment
technology at a lower cost than usual.
As the next stage of this partnership, XpressJobs is looking at ways to help fill the void of
talent in the IT sector. ICTA has a goal of growing the Sri Lankan startup workforce to
10,000 employees strong. This would in turn greatly help the Sri Lankan startup ecosystem
and the economy.

XpressJobs and eLearning.lk have announced a new partnership to help Sri Lankan job seekers gain the skills needed for school leavers and graduates to take the first steps of their career or even experienced employees transition into a new role in their career. To that end, the two organisations have launched an online learning platform called school.xpress.jobs.

Accessible to all with a profile on XpressJobs, the platform contains several courses created by eLearning.lk to help job seekers obtain the skills sought after by employers. But this is only the beginning as the partnership will offer free mentorship and other guidance to help Sri Lankans build fulfilling careers. The partnership mainly benefits two types of job seekers; School leavers and graduates who are undecided about their careers while lacking experience, and experienced professionals seeking to transition to a new role to unlock the next chapter of their careers.

The two organizations have launched an online learning platform accessible to all with a profile on XpressJobs. The platform contains several courses created by eLearning.lk covering a variety of topics ranging from marketing to HR to programming to law and even professional certifications by IELTS. This powerful combination of XpressJobs and eLearning.lk means job seekers are ready to work as soon they’re hired without the need for lengthy training periods. Importantly, the platform helps candidates confidently showcase their skills to their potential employers. For example, if a company is looking for a candidate skilled in digital marketing, then the badges on their profile indicate the courses they’ve completed to prove their proficiency.

Due to its popularity, XpressJobs is keenly aware of what recruiters and hiring managers seek from applicants. Hence, eLearning.lk is then able to offer career targeted curriculums in their courses, which would be conducted by the best instructors available in the relevant industry. All of these courses would be made available on the school.xpress.jobs platform in the comfort of their homes without having to attend physical lectures. This powerful combination of XpressJobs and eLearning.lk means job seekers are ready to work as soon they’re hired without the need for lengthy training periods.

The learning platform is only the first initiative of many undertaken by the partnership between XpressJobs and eLearning.lk. Moving forward, the two organisations are planning to offer free mentoring and organise workshops covering several topics on helping job seekers land their dream jobs, such as preparing a CV, facing interviews, career guidance, and helping them resolve gaps in their skillsets. The overarching vision of the partnership is a simple yet ambitious one. Working together, XpressJobs and eLearning.lk aim to ensure that after an employer posts an open position and the skills required for it, anyone interested in applying for it will have a clear pathway to gain those skills. While a grand vision, both companies are positioned to make a reality.

Ultimately, the collective efforts brought on by the partnership between XpressJobs and eLearning.lk will go a long way towards addressing the skills gap between employers and candidates. In doing so, it’ll help recruiters quickly identify the talent they desire, school leavers/undergraduates secure their dream jobs, and experienced employees unlock a new chapter in their careers.

What is the most important advantage a company has, is it your product, your marketing strategy or your people? Some could argue that it is well selected human resources, because getting to the best and most unique talent, in the face of fierce competition can make or break a company. And what better way to ensure this than linking your recruitment portal with an overall HRM solution to finetune your processes?

New Strategic Partnership

Job portal XpressJobs, the innovative problem solver in the field of recruitment, is pleased to announce a new strategic partnership with Blue Lotus 360 HRM, a leading SaaS(Subscription) based Cloud ERP & HRM solutions company. The good news for recruiters using Blue Lotus 360 HRM is that the partnership allows them to directly source candidates from the XpressJobs application tracking system (ATS). Integration also means that suitable candidates, notes and information gathered during the recruitment pipeline on the XpressJobs ATS are automatically linked to the Blue Lotus 360 HRM which will definitely reduce time spent by HR managers on administrative tasks such as maintaining documents and taking notes during interviews.

Blue Lotus 360 is the fastest growing Subscription based Cloud ERP & HRM solutions company in Sri Lanka. It has founders with 30+ years enterprise solution experience, and has raised investments from the John Keells accelerator program and Business Machines. They now support thousands of users worldwide via a network of local offices and through a growing ecosystem of partners.

“Customers don’t buy software. They buy solutions to their problems,” says Blue Lotus 360 Co-Founder and COO Nithushan Uthayakumar.

Traditionally SMEs use accounting software, and everything else from inventory to Human Resources would be on excel sheets due to the fact that alternative ERP solutions have been expensive and are very complex to implement. But Blue Lotus 360 offers an all-in-one suite of cloud-based business software built for SME’s covering diverse modules from Payroll, Human Resources, Accounting, Procurement, Inventory Management, to Project Management and Manufacturing. Blue Lotus 360 current clientele includes few of the largest Construction, Manufacturing, Trading, Services and Government entities to small companies with 3 users.

Supplementing HRM capacity

XpressJobs provides a number of unique benefits to recruiters who uses their services, including AI-like automated filtering of large numbers of job applicants which under normal circumstances may be beyond the capacity of a regular HR department. This is accomplished through a specialised system which targets the most qualified candidates, tracks applicants and grades them via strategically designed questions so that only the most suitable candidates are shortlisted for attention- particularly useful when large organisations and SME’s alike when recruiting with limited resources. Company HR managers benefit from being able to monitor the recruitment statistics, HR teams performance and processes and trends in candidate responses to forecast and get better at hiring talent.

Commenting on the current situation, Chief Operations Officer of XpressJobs

Dr. Oshadie Korale voiced her belief that the integration will encourage organisations to use recruitment technology available within the two platforms, this will specifically be of benefit to mutual customers in the face of the Covid19 ripple effect on local businesses going online.

Mr. Sanjeewa Wije Goonewardene (Chairman) of Tisara Group, an organisation that uses both platforms stated the integration is simple but effective necessary integration which will be vital to streamline the HRM process.

Colombo (Sri Lanka) & Manchester (UK) 29/06/2021 (immediate release):

Since founding of XpressJobs 5 years ago, the company has led the charge in introducing Recruitment Technology (Rec Tech) to the Sri Lankan hiring sector. Today, XpressJobs is well recognised as a leader in the Sri Lankan recruitment market, serving the whole of the country and not just Colombo and the main cities. To date, 4,500 companies have advertised 60,000 jobs. XpressJobs is used by over 442,210 candidates who have submitted 1.8 million job applications to date.

Among the new technology innovations brought to the Sri Lankan recruitment market by XpressJobs include smart-filtering, application tracking, CV less hiring, online timed quiz and video job adverts. In fact, thanks to these innovations, XpressJobs have become the trend setter for recruitment technology in Sri Lanka.

SkilledUp Life, an initiative by Techcelerate (a UK tech startup) was launched on 1st Aug 2020, as a direct result of Covid-19. The pandemic caused immense difficulties to tech startups in 2020. Investors withheld capital. Customers stopped buying. At the same time, job market dried up. Technology advancements continued to reduce worldwide job opportunities.

SkilledUp Life is developing a two sided marketplace, with one side offering endless opportunities for anyone to gain new experience and skills by volunteering their time, and on the other side, unlimited volunteer talent for early stage tech startups. SkilledUp Life is used by over 650 volunteers from over 40 countries including Sri Lanka.

SkilledUp Life is open to anyone aged 18 years and over. It’s ideal for young graduates looking to gain experience and skills to land their first job to experienced individuals who are employed currently but interested in broadening their skills to further their career or change the career path. SkilledUp Life is free to use and can be returned to when upskilling is required by anyone.

SkilledUp Life is also ideal for Corporates who want to be agile and innovative yet struggle due to internal bureaucracy. Corporates can send their employees to gain startups skills which could kick start real innovation.

The partnership allows candidates who lack sufficient experience and skills to land a job via XpressJobs, to be helped by SkilledUp Life. Once job seekers have gained experience and skills via SkilledUp Life, they return to XpressJobs to land their next job. Same will work for those seeking a career change.

Dr.Oshadie Korale, Chief Operating Officer of XpressJobs commented,

“When we founded XpressJobs back in 2015, recruitment in Sri Lanka was managed the old-fashioned way of using spreadsheets and emails. It was a highly time consuming cumbersome process. We wanted to make this process simpler. This led us to found and develop XpressJobs.”

“Whilst we have achieved significant success helping over 4500 companies, we were unable to help a large number of candidates due to their lack of experience and skills. When we first heard about SkilledUp Life, we knew we found a partner who could address this challenge”

“As we grow, I feel that our duty of care should extend beyond just helping companies to find the right talent. We should go beyond our way to help those who are not succeeding. Once again, I feel we have a real opportunity to make a significant difference to the Sri Lankan job market. I’m excited about the opportunities that would present through this partnership with UK’s SkilledUp Life for Sri Lankans.

“This partnership will give Sri Lankans an exclusive and unparalleled opportunity to gain experience and skills by working with cutting edge British, American and other foreign companies, thus dramatically improving and modernising the country’s overall skill base, and not just the individuals taking part.”

Dr. Korale came across SkilledUp Life, when the business advertised on XpressJobs to find a candidate to manage it’s growing community of volunteers and early stage tech startups.

Mr. Manoj Ranaweera, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SkilledUp Life commented,

We hired our Head of Community from XpressJobs. During the application process, we came across a large number of candidates who had the potential and especially the education qualifications, but was automatically filtered out due to not having the level of experience and skills we were looking for.”

“It didn’t take us long to reach out to the senior management of XpressJobs to discuss a potential partnership where we could help and bring new experience and skills to those candidates who lacked them.”

“To gain experience and skills, a volunteer only needs four things: the desire to improve his or her chances, spare time, a computer and access to the Internet. It’s as simple as that. Once registered and the profile is fully completed, anyone can apply to any of the volunteer opportunities with a click of a button. Opportunities ranges from social media marketing, designing and developing world class software applications to becoming a data scientist.”

“The IT sector is growing rapidly. It can be quite confusing to decide which area to focus from testing software applications to maintaining infrastructure for graduates. With Skilledup Life, you can try different opportunities to find a discipline you find passionate about.”

“I am excited about the prospect of working with a passionate team at XpressJobs who wants to change Sri Lankan job market for the better.”

The Partnership has already started to bear fruit. Over 30 candidates from XpressJobs have already signed up to SkilledUp Life to seek experience and skills. To sign up, visit https://skilledup.life

With so much emphasis on using data to make efficient decisions, XpressJobs created a dashboard that will help HR managers and executives understand their recruiting numbers.

XpressJobs, a recruitment services company that creates innovative tech-based solutions to solve recruitment problems, built an all-encompassing dashboard to complement their existing job portal. This dashboard allows HR managers to get analytics on valuable data on all applications they receive via the XpressJobs job portal. Analytics include the number of CVs that the company received, number of CVs that were opened by the HR team, CVs that were eligible for the job, how many applicants passed or failed the mandatory questionnaires, how many applicants booked for an interview and so on.

Caption: HR teams get an overall picture of the quality of candidates as seen above.

“I’ve seen the way data can change the way we function. When we sit with our clients and go through their data to get a better picture of what happens, it isn’t that the ideal candidate hasn’t applied, but the client just didn’t notice them,” says Dr Oshadie Kirale, COO of XpressJobs. The problem is that most organisations are unable to go through the large number of CVs that they receive. A large organisation of up to 4000 employees would get up to 2000 CVs per month out of which only 200 or so get shortlisted selected even though at least 400 are eligible. This means that 200 potential candidates who would be valuable assets to the organisation go unnoticed.

“There is no direct way HR managers get feedback on their teams’ performance. We’ve seen many companies where HR teams say that they didn’t get CVs but when we check the system, that’s not the case,” added Oshadie. Not only does this show statistics, but HR managers are also able to see the performance of their HR teams.

The dashboard displays all this data in palatable charts and graphics that anyone can understand. Most companies also don’t invest in Human Resources but only in marketing. However, what they fail to realise is that without the right people pushing them forward, their business isn’t going to achieve its fullest potential. Some companies are also reluctant to try new things which can stop innovation-driven progress. “Having these numbers help target the right candidate. It helps managers understand if they get more leads by asking for CVs or using our CV-less system. You can even learn which day of the week to post the job application to get maximum exposure. We want companies to not recruit blindly but really get to the bottom of why they struggle to hire,” says Oshadie who’s all for data-driven decision making in HR requirement and championing the cause of improving recruitment beyond standard job portals.

As an innovative tech-based problem solver, XpressJobs has been in operation for over four years. Their solutions provide recruiters with many features such as a filtering system that allows employers to accurately assess eligible candidates, a CV-less application system specially tailored for organisations who are seeking out blue colour workers, SMS alerts to make interviews more efficient and video job advertisements. This dashboard has been introduced to the 4000 clients working with XpressJobs at the moment such as HSBC, Keells, Softlogic, Dialog, ,Hayleys and Hemas etc., XpressJobs is the first among recruitment portals in Sri Lanka to enable their clients to use statistics in real-time.

There is no such thing as “Great workers are hard to find”, it’s just that you probably haven’t found the right person yet.  For a blue-collar recruiter, filtering through 100’s of applications for the right few is only half the battle. Fixing an appointment in another district and making sure that the candidate can go through with the interview is more complex than it sounds, especially when the applicant is far away. Much like many of the problems that XpressJobs is trying to solve, this was forwarded by recruiters themselves. Candidates who are called in to fill vacancies in supermarkets from far away areas such as Matara and Hambantota are requested to come for interviews at the head office in Colombo. More often than not, these candidates miss or skip the interview altogether because of the distance and the vacancy remains unfulfilled. Rather than calling 100+ applicants and telling them how and when to come, XpressJobs automated the process by adding a simple text message to the equation.

Smart Interviews made possible via an SMS

XpressJobs came up with a solution for this via a mobile SMS. With SMART INTERVIEW, the candidate picks an interview date/slot in the location that is convenient for them. If their application is short-listed, they get an SMS from XpressJobs confirming the interview time and location along with a contact person from the recruiting company. This enables the branch managers to interview the candidates in the same branch/outlet that they will be working without asking them to come all the way to Colombo. This feature is already in use with companies working with Xpressjobs, and they have drastically increased the number of applicants who turn up for the interview.

What is XpressJobs?

Started in 2015, XpressJobs was founded by Chathum Henagama, Sampath and Oshadie Korale. Three experts from different fields namely; technology, recruitment and marketing/science respectively combined to connect the dots between job vacancies and potential candidates.

XpressJobs carries out extensive research and continues to build awareness among recruiters to understand what lacks in recruitment and how they can provide a solution to it using technology. Their role is to build a bridge between candidates in a tech-savvy generation and a more mature, cooperate-minded recruiters.

Among their solutions are filtering systems which allow recruiters to comb through candidates, CV-less Application forms that allows recruiters to create a readily-available form for candidates to fill, Video Advertisements that paint a true picture about the company to build awareness to potential candidates and an Android app through which candidates can apply for jobs.
