In a heartfelt and vibrant act of community engagement, the Sri Lanka Institute of Urban Designers (SLIUD) conducted a transformative one-day CSR initiative titled “Colouring the Life – A Day with the Less Privileged Community @ RB Wattha, Maligawaththa”.
The project brought together urban designers, students, sponsors, and members of the public to revitalize and celebrate one of Colombo’s underserved neighbourhoods. Through creative placemaking, public space improvements, and meaningful interaction, the event breathed new life into RB Wattha, showcasing the power of design in building inclusive cities for all.
The initiative, which saw participation from children, youth, adults, and seniors alike, served as a timely reminder of the importance of human-centered urban design in marginalized communities.
“Urban design isn’t just about skylines and cityscapes – it’s about people. It’s about colour, connection, and community. This project embodies what we at SLIUD strive to achieve: equitable and joyful spaces for every citizen,” said Urb. Des. Prof. Janaka Wijeyasundara, President of SLIUD. “The smiles on the faces of the children, the laughter in the air – this is the real reward of urban design.”
From painting vibrant murals to cleaning and enhancing public spaces, the efforts of the SLIUD CSR team, in collaboration with the urban design student volunteers, left a lasting impression on both the neighbourhood and its residents.
Council Member Urb. Des. Shobha Seneviratna added,
“It was incredibly moving to see people of all ages engaging with the process. When we talk about ‘placemaking,’ it’s not just a theory – it’s about listening, sharing, and creating spaces that uplift human spirit. RB Wattha now tells a different story, one of dignity and hope.”
The event would not have been possible without the generous support of sponsors and partners, including Nippon Paints, Paunaya Foundation, Colombo Municipal Council, Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation (SLLRDC), and the Maligawaththa Police Station.
Assistant Secretary Urb. Des. Sumudu Gajanayaka emphasized the collaborative spirit behind the success:
“Our gratitude goes out to every volunteer, sponsor, and resident who joined hands with us. This was a true collective effort – proof that when we work together, we can design not just spaces, but stronger, happier communities.”
“Colouring the Life” is more than just a CSR project. It is a symbol of what can be achieved when creative minds meet compassionate hearts – and a powerful statement from SLIUD that cities must be designed for everyone, regardless of their socio-economic background.
As SLIUD continues to champion urban design with purpose, this event stands as a beacon for future efforts in making Sri Lankan cities more inclusive, vibrant, and liveable.
Because cities are for all of us.
