BYD, in partnership with its authorised distributor John Keells CG Auto, officially launched the SHARK 06 in Sri Lanka — marking the local debut of what is positioned as the country’s first plug-in hybrid pickup. Unveiled at a special launch event in Colombo, the SHARK 06 introduces a new category to the Sri Lankan automotive market, combining rugged off-road performance with next-generation hybrid technology and the premium features of a high-end SUV.
To mark the launch, an exclusive Shark 06 Experience Day was held at Port City Colombo, offering media and influencers a firsthand look at the vehicle in action. Participants were able to drive the SHARK 06 themselves on a custom-built track, guided by professional drivers in the passenger seat. The course featured steep climbs, uneven terrain, and other off-road challenges, offering a dynamic showcase of the Shark 06’s control, and off-road versatility — while also giving participants a closer look at its design, build quality, and off road presence.
Speaking at the launch event Mr. Liu Xueliang, General Manager of Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division at BYD Auto Industry Co., Ltd., said
“We are proud of the strong growth BYD has achieved in Sri Lanka so far, and with the launch of the BYD SHARK 06, we’re excited to continue this journey. This model combines innovation, and sustainability in a way that truly stands out in the market. We believe the BYD SHARK 06 will resonate well with Sri Lankan customers looking for a versatile and efficient vehicle. Looking ahead, BYD is fully committed to expanding our portfolio by bringing more cutting-edge models to Sri Lanka in the coming years, providing even greater choice and advancing new energy mobility across the country.”
At the heart of the BYD SHARK 06 is BYD’s advanced DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) Super Hybrid platform — engineered to deliver strength, stability, and intelligent performance. Unlike traditional pickups, it features a newly developed hybrid-specific body on frame model and a dual-motor system designed for all wheel traction giving it exceptional control on rough terrain. An intelligent all-wheel-drive system adjusts automatically to changing surfaces, while high-strength steel protection plates guard the underbody. Drivers can choose from four terrain-specific modes, as well as an Outdoor Mode that powers external devices — making it ideal for camping or off-grid use.
What truly sets the BYD SHARK 06 apart is BYD’s Super Hybrid system, which offers three intelligent drive modes to optimise performance and efficiency. In pure electric mode, the vehicle can travel up to 100km with zero emissions — perfect for daily commutes
Charith Panditharatne, General Manager of John Keells CG Auto, added:
“The BYD SHARK 06 is an exciting step forward in new energy mobility for Sri Lanka. Its ability to combine strong off-road capability with super hybrid technology delivers a smooth, powerful, and efficient driving experience. Features like the intelligent all-wheel drive and multiple driving modes make it versatile for any journey — whether city roads or rugged terrain. We’re proud to bring a pickup that blends sustainable innovation with real-world performance to the market”
With the announced price reduction to LKR 25.3 million, the first five BYD Shark 06 vehicles were handed over to customers at the launch, with more deliveries to follow. BYD and John Keells CG Auto continue to support the country’s transition toward new energy mobility by reinforcing their commitment to offer innovative, versatile vehicles designed to meet diverse driving needs.
