Melheim Beach Hotel, Norochcholai, Kalpitiya is one of the most sought after luxury hotels in Kalpitiya which offers unparalleled luxury amidst a calm and tranquil environment just by the golden sands of Sri Lanka’s northwest coast. The hotel management recently announced that exciting discounts up to 50 per cent are on offer until 31 May for all credit and debit cards; which is sure to excite the eager travellers who are looking for an idyllic getaway to the beach.

The hotel’s Deluxe rooms offer both beach view and garden view, depending on the visitors’ preferences. Those who find the waves crashing onto the beach rhythmically and the view of the blue sea and the golden sands soothing can opt for the beach view while those who prefer relative tranquillity and overall greenery in their view can opt for the garden view. Regardless, the close proximity to the beach means that sinking ankle deep in wet sand and picking seashells on the each is only a few strolls away, irrespective of the room type one selects.

If the visitors find the afternoon too sunny for their liking, the best option would be to take a dip in the hotel’s swimming pool shaded by coconut trees. The faint sound of the waves in the vicinity and the tranquility in the hotel garden is sure to elevate the bliss one feels while doing laps in the pool.

The hotel’s large in-house restaurant not only offers scrumptious and tantalising cuisines but also a panoramic view of the pool, the beach and the sea beyond. The experienced kitchen staff is poised to prepare any speciality cuisines, be it English, French, Italian, Indian, Chinese or Indian. However, since Kalpitiya is popular for best and the freshest seafood; trying out the local seafood delicacies, which range from the ones that pack a spicy punch to the cold and mild, is much encouraged. The restaurant of the hotel has made quite the reputation for itself, evident by the considerable number of walk-in guests for meals.

In terms of things to do during while at Melheim Beach Hotel, the guests are sure to be spoiled for choice since there are just too many. Whale and dolphin watching off Kalpitiya, kite surfing, bird watching, visiting islands off the tip of Kalpitiya such as Baththalangunduwa, overnight camping in islands, stargazing and beach BBQs at night, scuba diving, kayaking through the mangroves, visiting popular beaches, visiting Kalpitiya Dutch Fort and Kalpitiya Dutch Reformed Church, Safari rides at Wilpattu to see the leopards and bears, visiting Kudiramalai Point and so many other tourist attractions to visit which are only a few minutes of drive away, the exploration opportunities for the guests are endless.

As the tourism is slowly but steadily picking up its pace in Sri Lanka following the Pandemic and the economic crisis, the industry is in need of facilities to cater to both local and foreign tourists’ needs. Investing in tourism hospitality such as a hotel is not only a profitable venture when done right but it also creates a myriad of job opportunities for the local crowd. Moreover, the careful selection of the place for the hotel enables Sri Lanka to put up just another sought-after tourist destination on the global tourism map.

This was exactly what went through the mind of Harin De Mel, a diversified entrepreneur, before he invested in leisure and hospitality sector with Melheim Resorts. The company owns three luxurious hotels, namely; Melheim Resort and Spa in Beragala, Haputale, Melheim Kandy Villas, and Melheim Beach Hotel in Norochcholai, Kalpitiya, and they offer the perfect beach, nature and culture experience for the tourists. The last of the three hotels, Melheim Beach Hotel, Norochcholai, Kalpitiya, has managed to create a unique touristic allure to the otherwise industrial-sounding Norochcholai area. According to De Mel, the hotel was the first star-class hotel in Norochcholai, Kalpitiya area when it was established and now, their lead is followed by many other investors which is good for not only the industry but also the community.

Melheim Beach Hotel possesses everything a typical holiday should contain; a boutique hotel in a tranquil environment, luxurious rooms, sun, the beaches, plenty of things to do and places to visit, and a restaurant capable of fulfilling any gastronomic need. It also adopts strict safety measures spelled out by the health authorities and follow international-level industry cleaning and disinfection practices to ensure health and safety of guests.

The stunning new Sheraton Colombo Hotel, part of Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of over 30 extraordinary brands opened its doors recently. Strategically situated in the central hub of Colombo’s business and shopping district, the new 320-room hotel boasts the brand’s signature warm hospitality amidst a beautifully designed property. With over two decades as an experienced hospitality professional with a passion for operational excellence and guest engagement, Sheraton Colombo Hotel General Manager Rahul Maini shares insights into the hotel’s signature experiences and commitment to providing superior hospitality.

Q: What inspired Colombo as the location of the new Sheraton Hotel, and how does it contribute to the overall guest experience?

Marriott International as a brand is growing globally, increasing its presence across various countries and continents. The company has also been expanding its footprint specifically within Sri Lanka, having witnessed strong growth and positive response for existing hotels in the country. For instance, Weligama Bay Marriott Resort & Spa was the first property launched here, followed by Sheraton Kosgoda Resort & Spa, Courtyard by Marriott Colombo, and now the new Sheraton Colombo Hotel – representing Marriott’s fourth hotel in total and second Sheraton-branded property.

The rationale behind opening an additional Sheraton hotel in Colombo is timing, as we believe current conditions make it an optimal opportunity to cater to rising tourists and business travellers by providing world-class accommodation and meetings infrastructure. Sri Lanka has been recording month-on-month increases in tourist arrivals since 2023, a momentum expected to continue in 2024. Moreover, the government’s tourism promotion initiatives across source markets such as India, China and Europe will further boost demand. Marriott International has been steadily increasing its competitive presence and offerings in Sri Lanka during this period via compelling brands including Sheraton that exemplify world-class service.

Q: Can you elaborate on the world-renowned Sheraton experience and any signature services that guests can look forward to at Sheraton Colombo Hotel?

The Sheraton experience draws inspiration from the public square and is built upon the brand’s passion point, which centres around Sheraton’s design and guest experience strategies. These elements are seamlessly integrated to create an environment that works in harmony, strengthening the brand’s vision of being the world’s gathering place.

When we speak about Sheraton, it is about a place that welcomes the world. There are numerous features to explore, one of which is the Community Table. This table is designed with the idea of making Sheraton a world’s gathering place, where people come together to celebrate special occasions, build connections, and engage in meaningful interactions.

In addition to the Community Table, we have a range of activities that we are planning to include in our services. These activities aim to enhance the overall guest experience. For instance, we will have special community days where locally inspired artists will be invited to showcase their talents, welcoming both hotel guests and neighbours from the community to enjoy these unique experiences.

Examples of activities may include local dance performances or rejuvenating spa experiences. These are the distinctive services that the Sheraton brand is proud to offer, ensuring a memorable stay for both residents and non-residents of the hotel.

We aim to provide a distinctive array of local experiences to our guests, going beyond our dining area catering to a wide range of regional, Asian and international cuisines. A special section dedicated to showcasing the rich and diverse flavours of Sri Lankan cuisine, will enable guests to immerse themselves in local culinary delights.

Q: How does the hotel cater to the needs of business travellers, and what facilities are available for corporate events or conferences?

Marriott as a globally renowned brand, offers a comprehensive array of services specifically tailored for business travellers. Our Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program is today regarded as the world’s largest travel program. Our services are also designed to cater to the needs of our corporate clientele.

A noteworthy offering for our busy corporate guests is the recently launched Mobile Key. Designed for individuals engrossed in meetings and seeking minimal time at the reception desk, the service supports mobile check-ins. Rooms are pre-blocked and pre-booked based on the arrival date, enabling guests to use their mobile devices to directly access their rooms, bypassing the traditional reception counter.

For our Marriott Bonvoy members, the Sheraton Club Lounge on the 21st floor provides an exclusive space ideal for meetings with clients or business partners. The secluded environment offers special boardrooms and kiosks, ensuring a private setting.

We also serve clientele engaged in Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) activities. With a hotel inventory of 320 rooms, we can comfortably accommodate meetings hosting up to 150 delegates, in addition to intimate functions. The Sheraton Hotel Colombo is well-equipped to facilitate business-related needs, offering a seamless blend of convenience and sophistication for our corporate clientele.

Q: Can you elaborate on novel amenities and facilities for guests at Sheraton Hotel Colombo?

Sheraton Hotel Colombo offers an unparalleled experience with its unique guestrooms and exceptional views.

Visitors seeking complete relaxation and rejuvenation are invited to experience Sheraton’s Shine Spa, where a team of Balinese therapists awaits to usher them into a world of sensory bliss and revitalizing therapies. The Hotel offers a well-equipped and state-of-the-art fitness center with expert guidance, and a supportive environment to help guests maintain their fitness routines and achieve optimal health during their stay.

Each of our room boasts contemporary décor and features amenities such as a 49-inch flat-screen TV, complimentary high-speed internet access, stylish marble bathrooms, and the renowned signature bed, ensuring guests enjoy a restful night’s sleep in comfort and luxury.

The Sheraton’s Presidential Suite sets the standard for luxury accommodation, offering discerning guests an unparalleled experience of opulence and refinement. In addition, the Hotel offers different luxurious suite categories such as Executive and Junior suites tailored to cater to various guests’ needs. They all offer access to the exclusive Sheraton Club Lounge.

Guests can also indulge in expertly crafted cocktails at the Colpetty Lounge, relaxing, mingling, and savouring innovative creations prepared by the hotel’s talented mixologists. Or they can visit the Ceylon Bake Shop, to experience a curated selection of coffee and tea.

Q: Any specialty dining experiences, and exciting events planned at the Hotel?

The Hotel will soon unveil Pan Asian dining experiences this year that will redefine gourmet perspectives in the city. The new rooftop restaurant will take guests on a culinary voyage blending global flavours with locally inspired creativity. An adjacent al fresco area will enable guests to dine under moonlit skies. Together with a dazzling rooftop bar, it is set to be the city’s premier destination for bespoke beverages and mixology, with eclectic music setting the tempo, for electrifying evenings.

A young Hirushan Vijayanga hailing from deep down south, Rakawa has created a major sensation in the local tourism arena by obtaining a patent for his unique design, name and logo of the hotel, Igabara Hobbit House. Just 27 years of age and CIMA undergraduate, he ventured into the tourism sector in 2019 by opening the hotel with just one luxury cabana with first ever ‘hobbit house experience’ in Sri Lanka. The concept was created by a famous fantasy novel and movie, ‘The Lords of the Rings’ and hobbits are fictional and tiny humanoid race.

“The design, name and logo too has now become very popular and this is the reason for me to obtain a patent. I studied many architectural designs of the world and created a mix of all and built this tall structure with Palmyrah leaf roofing which is highly lauded by the guests. I have also created a unique interior design and have added a lot of luxurious furniture to the interior of each room.” Hirushan Vijayanga stated. The hotel is built on a 95 perch land and he gradually invested in two more luxury cabanas. “I am now looking to add a fourth by the end next year to meet high foreign demand. In a bid to provide more luxury I will also add four individual private swimming pools to each cabana. This would be built and ready by the end of the year.” He added.

By then the total investment of the project would be around Rs. 150 million. Igabara Hobbit House is located 50m away from Rekawa lagoon and the beach. It’s also in close proximity to the world famous natural turtle breeding beach for which they arrange excursions. Guests also enjoy kayaking and capture scenic sunset views by walking to the large shallow lagoon. He also has an experienced kitchen staff that prepares both tasty local and western meals. The hotel also received a major accolade in 2020 when it was awarded runners up award for ‘Most Popular Hotel’ at by Flame Awards in 2020. In addition, he also received a unique 9.8 rating out of 10 for his hospitality from Bookings.com which is also a rare feat for a hotel of this magnitude. A simple ceremony was also held last week in celebrating the fourth anniversary of the hotel.
