Colombo, Monday 5th February 2024: Sri Lanka’s pioneering youth magazine Chokolaate is set to celebrate fourteen years of inspiring young designers with the 2024 edition of the Mother Daughter Fashion Designer Contest this year. A brainchild of the Founder and the Managing Director of Chokolaate Michelle Gunasekara, MDFD has been a stepping stone not only for young designers but also for mother-daughter duos who have walked the ramps over the years.

This year’s fourteenth edition is slated to be another star-studded affair with the semi-finals set to unfold in March, and the grand finale in May. Applications are now open and interested individuals can register at https://forms.gle/US3Kt9M3vCKCyEF6A. The deadline is set for 28th February 2024.

Young designers will submit their creations for the mother and daughter in the categories of casual, sports and evening wear which will be evaluated by a panel of eminent industry professionals. Once the finalists are selected, they will go through a series of trainings and workshops in various areas including design, fashion marketing and brand building. At the grand finale, the designs must be modelled by a real mother and daughter.

Last year, Thilini Jayasekara walked away with the coveted prize of Designer of the Year. She is currently in India for a one-week internship programme with renowned fashion designers Shantanu & Nikhil that was a part of her take homes as the winner of MDFD 2023.

“MDFD started off as a tribute to the bond between mothers and daughters which for me was both a daughter and mother was timeless. However, today it has evolved in to a platform that not only allows young designers to test their skills, but to also learn from professionals, enter the fashion industry and make a name for themselves. The fact that we are now in the 14th edition of the show is also a testament to how much the show has grown in popularity and is accepted as one of the premier events in Sri Lanka’s annual fashion calendar”, said Michelle Gunasekara.
