During the last decade, despite the considerable number of protected houses established for cultivation, Sri Lanka has not been able to achieve the expected targets through SMART agriculture due to a lack of technological knowledge, improper crop maintenance, and inadequate guidance.

Identifying these challenges the Agricultural arm of DIMO, DIMO Agribusinesses through its DIMO Agritech Unit introduced a range of technological solutions such as modern protected houses and polytunnel models with specific guidelines to increase agricultural productivity through SMART farming methods.

Speaking further, DIMO Agribusinesses Chief Operating Officer (COO) Priyanga Dematawa said, “Climate change increases crop damage which needs crop specific solutions. We have introduced modern protected houses that are well suited for the lowland, wet and dry zones, as well as for the upland and intermediate zones.”

DIMO Agritech has introduced a modern protected house with Shield curtains and fans to suit the lowland wet and dry zones. To improve the micro-environmental conditions that are optimal for cultivation in the house, the side coverings of the house are equipped with polythene curtains that can be raised and lowered to coincide with the air circulation, fans and natural ventilation when necessary. This protected house is also equipped with a modern drip irrigation and fertilizer application system. This protected house has the ability to easily cultivate a wide range of crops. Especially high-value crops such as bell pepper, salad cucumber, tomato, which are grown in the upland wet zone, can be easily cultivated in this unit.

The protected houses for the upland and intermediate zones are constructed to match the temperature and ventilation of the natural environment with insect-resistant netting. These protected houses are also available in two roof shapes. This model also includes a cooling system to reduce the temperature.

“DIMO Agritech provides all the advanced water-soluble fertilizers required for any crop grown, along with specific crop guidelines. Our company also provides the seeds and planting material required for cultivation, as well as guidance on pesticides and pest management,” said Mr. Dematawa.

The company also uses special ground covers to ensure hygiene, a weed-free environment, and good drainage for the protected houses it creates. A team of experienced local and international technicians provides technical support at all stages of cultivation.

He further stated that investing in a house of at least 2,000 square feet is more effective, while a house of more than 4,000 square feet can yield greater commercial returns in 2-3 years.
