Hiruka and Vidara claim Summer Season Open Badminton 2025 titles

Hiruka Sahanmith and Vidara Vidanage clinched the Men’s and Women’s Open titles at the Summer Season All-Island Open Championships 2025, which concluded at the Municipal Council Indoor Stadium in Nuwara Eliya during April 21st and 27th.

Sahanmith got the better off Thenuka de Silva in straight sets to claim the Men’s Open Singles title, while Vidanage had to starve off an energised Nethmi Ratnayake in the Women’s Open Singles final, before recording a thrilling 2-1 win.
 



 

Oshamika Karunarathna and Thulith Palliyaguru teamed up to defeat Resintha de Silva and Thenuka de Silva, who was two time unlucky, to pocket the Men’s Open Doubles title in straight sets, while seasoned pair Isuri Attanayaka and Sithumi de Silva beat Sanadi de Silva and Vidara Vidanage in thrilling fashion to claim the Women’s Open Doubles title, following their success of winning the Girls’ Under-17 Doubles title earlier on. Alan Kristanto and Varangana Jayawardena staged a refined comeback to outsmart Madhuka Dulanjana and Anurangi Masakorala on their way to win the Mixed Open Doubles title.

Janeesha de Silva emerged victorious after recording a straight win against Hiruka Sahanmith in the Boy’s Under-19 Singles final, while Anuthmi Sooriyabandara was given a stiff competition by Thiseja Herath in the Girl’s Under-19 Singles final, before earning a 2-1 win. After being levelled at the second set Nethil Thewmika and Maneth Wijegunawardana made a remarkable recovery to beat Haneesha Kulathunga and Danusankha Sathruwa and claim the Boys’ Under-19 Doubles title.

Wedhaka Gomes and Nethmi Ratnayaka claimed the Boy’s and Girl’s Singles titles respectively in the Under-17 category, following their victories against Pamudu Randiligama and Sithuli Ranasinghe in contrast styles. Samiru Ranasinghe and Pamudu Randiligama paried up to record a 2-1 win against Nimeth Punchihewa and Thamindu Silva in the Boys’ Under-17 Doubles final, while Isuri Attanayaka and Sithumi de Silva made the initiative towards their double crown by recording a 2-1 win against Vinuthi Ranasinghe and Yenara Wickramasinghe on the way to claim the Girls’ Under-17 Doubles title.

Thamindu Fernando and Limandi Bandara claimed double crowns in the Under-15 category, winning both the Singles and Doubles titles. Thamindu beat Ranithu Premarathne in the Boy’s Singles final, and teamed up with Senuda Rajapaksa to defeat Yasiru Jayawardana and Sithika Resandul and claim the Boys’ Doubles title. Limandi, who recorded an easy straight win against Manuli Methara in the Girl’s Singles final, later on paried up with Sayuni Kulasuriya to claim another comfortable straight win in the Girls’ Doubles final against Miyesi Nethara and Nisheli Samararatne in the Girls’ Doubles final.

The seven-day National Ranking Level 1 competition, sanctioned by Sri Lanka Badminton (SLB), was organised and conducted by the Central Province Badminton Association (CPBA), where top ranked shuttlers of Sri Lanka competed in the competition as one of the key sporting attractions of Nuwara Eliya during April every year.    

A total prize money of Rs.750,000 for all events based on the number of entries was presented to the winners, runners-up and semi-finalists of each event in addition to trophies, medals and certificates. SLB President, Mr. Rohan de Silva graced the awards ceremony as the Chief Guest, under the invitation of CPBA President Mr. Mahinda Dodampe Gamage. The tournament was sponsored by Mobil, Li Ning, McFoil, 3M and GAC.
