Melwa, Sri Lanka’s leading steel manufacturer, played a key role in this year’s (2025) Selalihini Wasanthaya in Nuwara Eliya by sponsoring both the festival and its major attraction, the Gregory’s Mud Challenge. Held on 19 and 20 April, the Mud Challenge, organised by the Nuwara Eliya 4×4 Club, drew off-road enthusiasts and crowds of spectators for a thrilling weekend of motorsport excitement. The Selalihini Wasanthaya, a signature Avurudu celebration in Nuwara Eliya, brought together communities to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year with traditional games, cultural performances, and festive gatherings. From 16 to 26 April, Melwa extended its support to Avurudu festivals in several other parts of the country, including Hikkaduwa, Thanabaddegama, Matara, Tissamaharama, Monaragala, Welimada, Kandy, Kuliyapitiya, Galewela, and Ragama. These events promoted unity by engaging people of all ages in time-honoured customs that celebrate the country’s rich traditions. Melwa’s support for these events is part of their efforts to give back to communities and preserve Sri Lanka’s diverse cultural heritage. The company also regularly contributes to other national celebrations, including Vesak, Deepavali, Thai Pongal, Christmas, and Ramadan.
