A Unique Culinary Concept with a Purpose
Pango’s Bunwiches, the innovative culinary brand redefining casual dining in Sri Lanka, has proudly launched its third and largest outlet in the bustling town of Mt. Lavinia. Conveniently located at 174 Galle Road (Ground Floor, BC Lifestyle Studio Building), the new space combines expanded seating, a modern café-style atmosphere, and an enhanced menu, solidifying Pango’s position as one of Colombo’s fastest-growing food concepts.
What began in February 2024 as a ghost kitchen in Thimbirigasyaya has rapidly grown into a beloved food destination with two existing locations, including one at One Galle Face Mall. The Mt. Lavinia outlet marks a significant milestone in the brand’s journey, offering not just the signature ‘Bunwich’ that has captured the hearts of Colombo’s foodies but also an exciting new range of burgers, speciality coffee, and beverages.
At the heart of Pango’s identity is the ‘Bunwich’—a unique reinvention of the traditional sandwich using butter-toasted, pressed burger buns filled with gourmet ingredients. The concept was born from Founder Oshan Samaranayake’s vision to create something flavourful, accessible, fast, and distinctive in the local food market. The buns themselves are inspired by Hokkaido Milk Buns, known for their pillowy softness and rich, slightly sweet flavour. Each Bunwich is a careful balance of texture and taste, expertly curated by culinary innovator Chef Dush Ratnayake.
“Our goal was to introduce something exciting and new,” said Oshan. “Initially, I wanted to do burgers, but Chef Dush came up with the bunwich idea, and it resonated incredibly well with our customers.”
The Mt. Lavinia outlet boasts a warm, aesthetically pleasing interior with ample seating, high chairs, and the capacity to accommodate up to 30 guests, making it ideal for solo diners and families. In addition to fan-favourites such as the Roast Chicken Nai Miris Mayo, Ham & Cheese, and The Club Bunwich, the new location introduces a bold burger lineup, including the Beef Double Patty Smash Burger with Nai Miris Jam, Beef Double Patty Smash Burger with Kithul Mustard Mayo, and Classic Chicken Burger with Pango’s Nai Miris Mayo. Customers can enjoy barista-crafted coffee, premium hot chocolate made without palm oil, and an expanded beverage menu in a relaxed café setting.
Pango’s Bunwiches is more than just a food brand; it is a movement driven by a deep-rooted commitment to wildlife conservation and sustainability. The name “Pango” is inspired by the endangered Sri Lankan pangolin, the most trafficked mammal in the world. The brand’s mission extends beyond culinary innovation to environmental activism and education.
“Pango was never just about opening a restaurant,” Oshan expressed. “It was about using food as a medium to protect our wildlife, support local communities, and operate sustainably. Everything from plastic-free packaging to sourcing 95% of our ingredients locally is part of that vision.”
In less than a year, Pango’s has donated over Rs. 1,350,000 to wildlife protection initiatives. The brand actively supports and collaborates with organisations such as The Pearl Protectors, Turtle Patrol, and the Parrotfish Collective to safeguard Sri Lanka’s rich biodiversity.
They are also developing creative educational tools, such as wildlife-themed messages, card games and a children’s book, to raise awareness among the younger generation about pangolin protection and environmental conservation.
Pango’s Bunwiches has quickly become a household name for its delicious, innovative food and purpose-driven ethos. With every Bunwich served, Pango’s contributes to a larger mission, nurturing a sustainable future for Sri Lanka’s wildlife and environment.
