With an aim to encourage interest in and advancement of computer science education among Sri Lankan students and educators, SLT-MOBITEL partnered with the STEMUP Educational Foundation to host the ‘Day of Code 2023’, for the second consecutive year.

Day of Code was organized to celebrate and commemorate international Computer Science Education Week held during December 4-10, 2023

As the National ICT Solutions Provider, SLT-MOBITEL understands that computer science skills have become crucial for young people to unlock opportunities, compete in the global digital economy, and drive innovation. However, many lack of exposure to foundational technology education and resources. Empowering youth with digital capabilities and unlocking their potential, SLT-MOBITEL proudly endorsed the Day of Code 2023, advocating greater learning in computer science.

The event commenced with opening remarks from the STEMUP Foundation and SLT-MOBITEL on the growing importance of digital skills. Internationally respected Hadi Partovi, founder of Code.org, inspired students through a virtual appearance. Several other distinguished speakers also addressed the gathering.

The Day of Code 2023 featured an exciting line-up of sessions aimed at sparking enthusiasm for computer science among students of all ages. Informative workshops were led by local industry experts and academics, introducing core computer science concepts, essential digital literacy, and problem-solving abilities. Students experienced hands-on workshops with activities designed for beginner to advanced skill levels across coding, robotics, AI, IoT, cybersecurity, and other STEM domains.

Additionally, motivational talks and panel discussions demonstrated real-world applications in entrepreneurship, personal development, and careers in technology. Students also heard first-hand career journey stories from pioneers.

Working with the STEMUP Foundation, SLT-MOBITEL is able to contribute to vital work in building digital fluency and computational thinking skills among students islandwide. The partnership also illustrates SLT-MOBITEL’s long-standing commitment to narrowing the digital divide through strategic social initiatives that enrich communities.

The STEMUP Foundation aspires to boost scientific, technological, engineering, and mathematical (STEM) proficiency across Sri Lanka through groundbreaking learning programmes and has worked extensively with a multitude of public schools thus far to embed technology-enabled education.
