SLVA celebrates Int’l Veterinary Day with range of activities

Colombo, Sri Lanka – The Sri Lanka Veterinary Association (SLVA) is pleased to announce a series of events to celebrate International Veterinary Day on April 29, 2023. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Veterinarians: The guardians of animal welfare.” The SLVA believes that it is important to raise awareness of the veterinary profession and the role it plays in protecting animal health and welfare, public health, and food safety.

The SLVA has organized several activities in different locations to mark this important day. The events include awareness programs for school children on responsible pet ownership and urban wildlife, farmer awareness programs, and dog sterilization and rabies vaccination programs.

On April 24, SLVA’s “Hathwana Peya” program on ITN will feature the importance of veterinary profession and world veterinary day celebrations in Sri Lanka. This program aims to educate the public on the veterinary profession and its role in promoting animal health and welfare.

On April 26, a school children awareness program on “Prevention of Dog bites through Responsible pet ownership” and “Urban Wild Life” will be held at All Saints Girl’s school, Colombo 08. On April 27, a similar program will be held at Sangabhodi Vidyalaya, Thotalaga, Kattamurichhcana Vidyalaya, Thirappane, and Pethis Rabewa Vidyalaya, Thirappane.

In addition, the SLVA has organized dog sterilization and rabies vaccination programs on April 27 and 28 at Milleniya, Veterinary Hospital Rathnapura, VS office Kegalle, VS office Homagama/Kiriwatthuduwa Milk collecting Center, and Millaniya Divisional Secretariat Office.

On April 28, a farmer awareness program on “Prevention of Mastitis” will be held at Millaniya Divisional Secretariat Office. Also, awareness programs for school children will be held at Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo 08, Susumayawardana Boys College, Colombo 09, Wariyapola Sumangala Vidyalaya, Kandy, and C.W.W Kannangara Vidyalaya, Colombo 08. Similarly, on the same day, a program will be held at Gothami Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo 08.

On April 29, the SLVA will hold a dog sterilization and rabies vaccination program at Milleniya.

We hope that these activities will help people to understand the vital role that veterinarians play in our society.”
