Stay Healthy This Festive Season

December 21, 20183min2

The festive season brings wonderful opportunities to be surrounded by family, friends and colleagues as we celebrate the season at the end of another year. However we should take caution not to go overboard with celebrations so that it damages our health. As we approach a season of indulgence in festive goodies and beverages this December, let us try to make healthy choices.

Rates of occurrence and related mortality of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease and cancer are increasing in Sri Lanka too. Reducing this burden is encouraged through the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages.

A healthy change in diet and lifestyle should be continuous through a sustainable approach and not be one of a restricted diet with bouts of feasting in-between.

Therefore here are a few tips to help you stay healthy while enjoying this festive season.

  • Make sure you have regular meals throughout the day ( 3 main meals + 2 snacks) rather than limiting to 1 or 2 huge main meals rich in fats, meats and sugary desserts
  • Include some complex/fibre-rich carbs into your meals/desserts while enjoying the sweets and desserts that give simple sugars (try to include fruit as option for dessert)
  • Alcohol gives lots of calories without any nutrients so if you choose to take alcohol do not have in excess amounts
  • Make sure that you include veggies throughout your meals (salads, soup, vegetable curries, courses)
  • Since it is a time where lots of meats are consumed, opt for lean meat that are baked or grilled rather than deep-fried
  • While enjoying the season include some activities that keep you active (dancing, games)
