February 29th, 2024: Celebrating its island-wide retail partner network, Airtel Lanka successfully completed two of its popular ‘R-Offer’ raffle draw programmes between August and December 2023.

Approximately 8,600 retailers qualified for the R-Offer raffle draw, based on the number of reloads that each of them had sold. By the end of the programme, Airtel Lanka rewarded 1,500 of these retailers with a brand new smartphone, and gift vouchers ranging from Rs. 1,000, Rs. 2,000, and Rs. 5,000.

Inspired by the success of similarly popular global initiatives, R-Offer empowers Airtel retail partners to provide customers with products specially tailored to deliver maximum value based on individual customer individual needs. This is a first of its kind initiative launched by Airtel in the Sri Lankan Market which was later adopted by various other operators.

According to Airtel CEO/MD, Ashish Chandra, this in turn fosters greater customer satisfaction by offering them unmatched offers specially crafter for them, while increasing retailer earnings up to 40 %.

“Our retail partners across the island have been fundamental to Airtel’s phenomenal growth to this day, The R-Offer programme is our way of standing by them through challenging times, and showing our gratitude and appreciation for their essential contributions to our continuing growth,” Chandra said.

Available through the Airtel Retailer app, the R-Offer facility is already used by a remarkable 65% of Airtel’s retailer app users. On average, each of these retailer generates 25% of their income through R-offer.

This year, Airtel also introduced a loyalty scheme for “R-Offer” users, categorizing retailers into four tiers: Diamond, Platinum, Gold, and Silver, based on their usage patterns and volumes, with each tier unlocking more valuable perks and rewards.

The programme also included an exclusive raffle draw which ran from August to September. Approximately a quarter of Airtel’s retail partners qualified for this year’s draw. The raffle draw was held on 19th September 2023, with participation from senior members from Marketing, Sales, Legal & Finance. Winners of the R-Offer raffle received smartphones and vouchers from leading supermarkets

February 22nd, 2024: Airtel Lanka users can expect a significantly smoother and faster mobile internet experience following the telco’s landmark partnership with content delivery network (CDN) services provider ‘DataCamp Limited’

Through the partnership, Airtel Lanka is now deploying DataCamp’s CDN77 Caching Platform – including hardware and software solutions at their Maligawatta and Kadawatha data centers – equipping them with the capability to handle up to 60Gbps of traffic collectively.

CDN77 deploys cache platforms around the world across data centers as well as among certain mobile operators’ like Airtel Lanka. This in turn enables a close proximity to end-users devices, resulting in faster, smoother, and more reliable network quality experiences for customers as their content is stored in a nearby data center, instead of reaching out for content hosted far away at a distant data center

“At Airtel Lanka, we are constantly looking for new ways to enhance value for our customers. In addition to investing in our physical network infrastructure, we are also keen to strategically partner, and collaborate with others in tech-telco eco-system to further enhance the value we can deliver to Airtel customers.

“Our roll-out of the CDN77 platform in partnership with DataCamp is another example of this approach in action, and is sure to provide customers with a significant boost to their mobile internet experience,” Airtel Lanka CEO/MD, Ashish Chandra said.

The platform also comes with built-in redundancy measures in the event one data center failing – enabling the other data center to take over seamlessly, until the other comes back online, enabling greater resilience and stability across the entire Airtel Lanka network.

Traffic generated from customers will be channeled through the CDN77 Caching Platform, and in the event the requested content is not available at the time of request, the platform will request this content from the original host location and update the Airtel cache platform, thus allowing users to more efficiently access the content from the cache thereafter.

This means that customers will have high-speed access to their favorite and on-demand online media including movies, music, sports as well as educational content. It will also enable Airtel to leapfrog the competition, with drastically improved service quality and efficiency to the already leading technological benefits coming from Bharti Airtel, the world’s third largest mobile operator globally.

Airtel relies on local cache platforms for at least 56 percent of subscriber traffic. This will undoubtedly improve the overall user experience, while also helping to conserve foreign exchange by reducing the need for international bandwidth and accompanying tariffs.

Bharti Airtel Lanka commenced commercial operations of services in Sri Lanka in 2009 and was the fastest operator to reach 1 million customers. The Airtel Lanka offering of technology innovation and service excellence has seen rapid adoption rates among the Sri Lanka youth. Registered under the Board of Investment in Sri Lanka, Airtel Lanka provides digital mobile services which include voice, data and enterprise solutions and currently ranked the fastest 3G mobile network provider in Sri Lanka.

As Sri Lanka continues to grapple with the lingering effects of successive crises, that have pushed countless individuals to their mental, physical, and financial limits, the ‘1926’ Mental Health Helpline and Chat-line stands out as a beacon of hope.

Born from a collaboration between the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and Airtel Lanka, this service has initiated over 1,000 life-saving interventions since launching just prior to pandemic lockdowns two years ago.

To mark World Suicide Prevention Day on 10th September, we spoke to Dr. Vindya Wijayabandara, a specialist psychiatrist at NIMH about the challenging but life altering work taking place at the chat-service, particularly in the context of an unacknowledged mental health crisis that continues to escalate across Sri Lanka, and the potential for more citizens to embark on their own path to healing and recovery.

Q: Could you describe the current mental health landscape in Sri Lanka, particularly in light of recent national challenges?

A: Certainly. We’ve seen a notable increase in mental health issues across all age groups in Sri Lanka due to the psychosocial challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and economic uncertainties. Depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts have become more prevalent. Interestingly, there’s been an increased willingness among people to acknowledge and address these issues. Technology has played a role in this shift, as more individuals are using modern tools and social media to seek help and information.

Q: What are the key challenges faced by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in providing mental health services in Sri Lanka?

A: One of our biggest challenges is the shortage of trained mental health specialists, including psychiatrists, doctors, nurses, and support staff. This shortage is particularly felt in peripheral hospitals, impacting the equitable distribution of mental health services. Additionally, the availability of essential medications remains an ongoing concern, affecting the timely treatment of individuals in need.

Q: Could you tell us about the partnership between Airtel Lanka and NIMH and its impact on mental health services?

A: Certainly. Airtel Lanka’s collaboration with NIMH has resulted in the establishment of the 1926 National Mental Health Chatline. This helpline, sponsored by Airtel, has been operational since October 2020 and has made a significant impact in providing access to mental health information and support.

Q: Can you provide some statistics on the impact of the 1926 National Mental Health Helpline and Chatline?

A: Of course. Since its inception, the helpline has handled 109,044 successful interventions (calls), with 20,166 calls in 2022 and 17,562 in 2023. Additionally, the chatline has facilitated 1,812 chats in 2022 and 2,143 in 2023. The services have been particularly beneficial in the Western Province, where most communications were received. It’s noteworthy that the helpline receives around 50 calls per month related to suicidal ideation.

Q: What challenges did you face in operating the 1926 National Mental Health Helpline, and how were they overcome?

A: Operating the helpline came with its set of challenges. Firstly, we needed to train a team of nursing officers in telephone counseling, which we started in early 2018. Ensuring a dedicated pool of trained staff, finding a suitable location, maintaining 24/7 supervision, and managing record-keeping and data gathering were also challenges. Moreover, the technical aspects were unfamiliar to our staff. However, the dedication of our nursing officers and the unwavering support of the hospital administration have been crucial to overcoming these obstacles.

Q: Looking ahead, what areas do you believe offer potential for further improvement in mental health services?

A: There’s always room for growth and improvement. One area to explore is enhancing the chatline to address certain risks promptly and improve engagement. Additionally, the use of AI technology could be a significant breakthrough. Mental health promotion starting from self-awareness is also crucial, and we plan to empower consumers, caregivers, and volunteers in this regard.

Q: What message would you like to convey to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis?

A: If you’re going through a mental health crisis, please know that you are not alone in your experience. Many others face similar challenges but often hesitate to seek help due to fear of stigma and judgment. I encourage you to share your feelings and concerns with empathetic professionals, preferably a mental health team. If meeting someone in person feels overwhelming, remember that the 1926 National Mental Health Helpline is here for you. Don’t carry the burden alone; help is just a phone call away.

March 02nd, 2023: Sri Lanka’s fastest growing telco, Airtel Sri Lanka, announced the successful conclusion of the hotly anticipated ‘Airtel Smartphone Bonanza’ campaign, which culminated in 60 lucky Airtel users entering the New Year with a brand new high value smartphone.

Coming at a time when importation of smartphones has reached a near stand-still in Sri Lanka, the campaign was designed by Airtel to both support and reward the brand’s most loyal customers.

“While Airtel’s mission in Sri Lanka has always been centered on delivering maximum value to our customers, this goal has taken on much greater significance over the past year, especially when considering the rising cost and dependence that each of us has on smartphones, and the freedom created by ready access to quality mobile internet.

“With the Airtel Smartphone Bonanza, we wanted to go above and beyond in showing our appreciation for our most loyal customers. We take this opportunity to congratulate this year’s winners, and extend our gratitude and best wishes to all our customers,” Airtel Sri Lanka MD/ CEO Ashish Chandra said.

The ‘Airtel Smartphone Bonanza’ was open to customers who recharged over Rs.300 on a day basis, and winners were electronically picked at a random order, from a pool of eligible customers each following day. Winners were announced weekly through the company’s Airtel Life social handles, and the Airtel team directly reached out to the winners with congratulatory phone calls.

Airtel Lanka has been at the forefront of shifting the Sri Lankan telco sector towards greater competition, and greater value for mobile users. Over the past two years, these efforts culminated in the launch of Airtel’s market disrupting 4G Freedom Packs, and the increasingly popular Unlimited Freedom packs, which were the very first in Sri Lanka to provide users with unlimited voice, and data for popular social media apps, at a highly affordable price point. Similarly, Airtel remains the only telco in Sri Lanka at present to offer data rollovers for its growing base of postpaid customers.

Airtel Lanka commenced commercial operations of services in Sri Lanka in 2009 and was the fastest operator to reach 1 million customers. Registered under the Board of Investment in Sri Lanka, Airtel has committed significant investments towards delivering an enhanced 4G experience leveraging state-of-the-art infrastructure and a 5G-ready network to provide world-class mobile broadband experiences island-wide.

The social and economic upheaval of the recent past has undoubtedly tested the resolve of every Sri Lankan. In the flurry of our day-to-day efforts to survive and safely navigate through times of unprecedented crisis, it is often the case that we neglect our emotions, all of which is likely to take a toll on our mental health.

However, when we consider that the foundation of good mental health comes from the ability to share and discuss the challenges we face, technology is increasingly serving as a channel to bring mental health back to the forefront. This is especially true for younger Sri Lankans who have much greater awareness about mental health, and the impact that it can have on their lives, but often lacked access to professional mental health resources.

Having recognized the potential to drastically enhance the quality of life of young Sri Lankans by filling this gap, Airtel partnered with the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in 2020 to introduce the ‘1926’ Mental Health Helpline and Chat-line.

The timely collaboration opened new and effective lines of communication for those seeking professional assistance. Subsequently, the ‘1926’ channels have facilitated 1,000 life-saving interventions. Dr. Pushpa Ranasinghe – Consultant Psychiatrist at the NIMH shared her experiences on mental health, and the life-saving potential that comes from creating spaces for honest and open conversation.

  1. What are some recent trends among Sri Lanka’s youth pertaining to mental health?

Our environment is one of the key factors determining mental wellbeing. Given the uniquely difficult challenges that so many have faced, we have seen a general rise in mental health issues in our work, and across society.

While all Sri Lankans have shown tremendous resilience over the past three years, there is a large and growing segment of our society that face extremely difficult struggles, and in such conditions, the ability to reach out for help, and speak out about the challenges we face can often help us to make a significant difference.

Sadly, we lose as many as 3,000 priceless lives each year to death by suicide, while many more suffer in silence. This is especially tragic when we consider how much of a positive impact that creating awareness, and a culture of openness and inclusivity can have on easing the burden of those suffering from mental health issues.

One notable trend in that regard is that over 50% of conversations enabled through the 1926 helpline were young adults aged between 20 and 29. A majority of children and adolescents prefer reaching out through the chat-line, as opposed to the conventional helpline, and even among those facing abuse, the ability to discreetly reach out for help via the Airtel-NIMH 1926 chat service has been extremely helpful.

  1. With over two years of operations, what key findings has the 1926 helpline and chat-line brought about?

It is estimated that 8% of all Sri Lankans suffer from a diagnosable mental illness. There are also large numbers of people who enjoy normal levels of mental health, but get negatively affected by situations they encounter in life.

This is of course perfectly natural, but the healthiest way to deal with day-to-day mental health challenges is not to bottle it up, but rather to talk about what you are going through.

Based on our work with the 1926 hotline, some of the most common causes of these episodes tend to be relationship issues, but we also get many requests for dealing with emotional issues, anxiety, and exam-related stress.

We also get a lot of calls from young people who are curious but lack access to basic information and want to simply understand the basics of mental health. But there are also more critical situations in which we get calls or texts from individuals dealing with suicidal ideation, and they require careful support.

Very often, the Airtel 1926 text-based chat service, and increasingly the Whatsapp service has been especially useful. Many times we find that youth and people going through stressful situations are more comfortable initiating their discussions via text. But it is also useful to provide follow up care as well. Here too, the platform that Airtel built for us to manage and monitor all text conversations has proven to be quite valuable.

It is also notable that twice as many women sought mental health support in comparison to men through the 1926 hotline, which points to another gap in male mental health that requires our collective attention. Over a third of unnatural female deaths, by both homicide and suicide, are related to relationship issues, therefore it is essential that we as a society consider how we can do more to collectively guide our youth towards better outcomes. Equipping them with the tools to better manage their mental health is the first step.

These are of course deeply entrenched issues with a great deal of social stigma attached to them. To solve these issues, all members of society must come together in order to promote healthier outcomes. We are therefore sincerely grateful to Airtel Lanka for stepping forward and supporting us to establish the 1926 text-based mental health service.

  1. What does the 1926 helpline and chat-line entail?

Initially we operated the 24-hour voice helpline, but we found that a majority of adolescents were reluctant to seek help due to stigma and lack of anonymity. Younger people feel more comfortable talking about their challenges online through text, as opposed to speaking about it over the phone. It has been proven over time that text-based, real time communication with a qualified professional is an effective tool of e-mental health service delivery.

This was soon followed by our 24-hour chat-line, made possible with the support of Airtel Lanka. The chat-line is free of charge and allows people to engage in one-to-one conversations with a qualified therapist.

We recently expanded the helpline to include a dedicated WhatsApp service via ‘075 555 1926’. This solution came as a means of optimizing operations and providing more convenience for those in need of mental health assistance, especially due to recent lockdowns and increased events of isolation which potentially result in mental health related issues.

  1. As the 1926 helpline expands, what training does your staff go through?

We encourage our staff to inculcate a personal sense of helping others through selfless service. To contribute to society by encouraging people that there is always purpose in life, a lesson with each experience or challenge, and that it is completely normal to ask for help.

We train our staff to deal with any scenario related to mental health illnesses and symptoms. This allows them to conduct the service impartially but with empathy. They are trained on when and how to escalate or de-escalate a conversation without being mentally or personally affected themselves.

We also plan to train passionate and committed volunteers who are qualified for the role, building on their capability to provide a sense of safety and trust to those who contact the 1926 helpline.

  1. What approaches can we adopt to foster a healthier community?

For those going through a rough patch in life, it is crucial to let them know that they are not alone, never out of options and that it is most definitely not the end. Especially for adolescent and young adults, it is important to remind them that the difficulties they face are often temporary. While we should never disregard the severity of what they may be going through – especially for those who have witnessed or experienced some form of trauma or abuse in their lives – by facing our emotions, and taking care of our mental health, there is always are always paths to a better future.

As a responsible members of the local community, we can do our duly diligence by being more informed and proactively identify if we or someone we know is struggling with their mental well-being. It is important to maintain self-awareness and work on our ability to empathize, manage stress and always focus on conflict resolution.

Building on the urgent national efforts to enhance access to professional mental healthcare services for all Sri Lankans, Airtel Lanka in partnership with the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) announced the expansion of its Whatsapp service into a 24/7 operation.

The expanded service is designed to ensure that anyone facing challenges with their mental health can reliably reach out for help free-of-charge, and be assured of a compassionate and helpful response, day or night.

Prior to this, the NIMH was reachable 24/7 only through the 1926 helpline, and the operating hours of both SMS and Whatsapp lines had been restricted between 8am – 4pm.

“At a time when record numbers of Sri Lankans are facing extreme uncertainty, and unprecedented levels of stress and anxiety, we believe that mobile technology can be better utilized to make sure that every Sri Lankan and especially youth have access to the support they need to more effectively manage their mental health. In this manner, we can ensure that no Sri Lankan is left behind,” Airtel Sri Lanka CEO/MD, Ashish Chandra stated.

He added that moving forward, Airtel would also be working to amplify awareness about the importance of mental health and available services for those facing challenges to young Sri Lankans across the country. In an effort to do so, Airtel sponsored art and trilingual essay competitions conducted by the NIMH. Leveraging existing communications channels and partnerships with educational institutions, these sessions were catered to students of all grades across schools island-wide, in honour of World Mental Health Day 2022 in October.

“Between the lockdowns, and economic hardships, we are seeing an increase in the number of Sri Lankans reaching out for help with a range of mental health issues through the 1926 service. Especially for our younger users, they are often much freer to talk to us through the Whatsapp service in the evenings. We are grateful to the Airtel team for helping us bring these essential services into a 24 hour format, and amplifying the reach of this life-saving service,” NIMH Senior Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr. Pushpa Ranasinghe said.

Since launching 2 years ago on World Mental Health Day 2020, the text-based 1926 service alone has helped to initiate over 1000 life-saving interventions, in addition to providing support, comfort and guidance to many individuals facing challenges with their mental health. Most recently, Airtel partnered NIMH to further expand the SMS service to also include a Whatsapp line.

The initiative is also aligned with Airtel’s global mission to connect and empower youth across the world. Currently Airtel operates in 17 countries across South Asia and Africa, with networks that serve over two billion people. Ranked among the top three mobile operators globally, in recent months Airtel has also engaged in novel partnerships with global tech giants like Google and Meta in order create opportunities for enhancing digital inclusion across the region.

If you or someone you know is facing a challenge with their mental health, simply call, or SMS 1926, or start a chat on Whatsapp by messaging 075 555 1926. Airtel users have access to all these services completely free of charge
