Since 2020, APO Group has worked alongside the Jack Ma Foundation to execute a holistic campaign for the ABH Prize across the continent

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, May 19, 2022/APO Group/ –APO Group (www.APO-opa.com), the leading Pan-African communications consultancy and press release distribution service, is delighted to announce that it has won a prestigious PRovoke Africa SABRE Award for the public relations campaign around the Africa’s Business Heroes (ABH) Prize Competition.

The ABH program (www.AfricaBusinessHeroes.org) is designed to promote entrepreneurship in Africa and empower the next generation of African business leaders. APO Group’s involvement in a dedicated Public Relations campaign in 2021 led to one of the most successful editions of the ABH Prize Competition ever, and helped raise the profile of African entrepreneurship throughout the continent and beyond.

The PRovoke Africa SABRE Awards are Africa’s leading Public Relations Awards. Held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the 2022 SABRE Awards attracted more than 2000 entries from Public Relations agencies all over the continent. A jury of industry leaders chaired by PRovoke Media founder Paul Holmes, was looking for campaigns that were brave, authentic, shareable, and caught the public imagination – and ABH ticked all of those boxes.

The ABH Prize is one of the Jack Ma Foundation’s key philanthropic initiatives, with a 10-year commitment to supporting the development of a new entrepreneurial ecosystem. Each year, ten finalists are selected from tens of thousands of applications to win a share of a $1.5 million prize pool in grant money.

Jack Ma, Founder of Alibaba Group and the Jack Ma Foundation, launched the ABH Prize after he made his first trip to Africa in 2017 and was inspired by the energy and entrepreneurial potential of the young people he met.

Since 2020, APO Group has worked alongside the Jack Ma Foundation to execute a holistic campaign for the ABH Prize across the continent, while APO Group Founder and Chairman, Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard, has been a semi-final judge for the last two editions of the competition.

The work done by APO Group and the ABH team was voted the overall winner in the Northern Africa category of the 2022 SABRE Awards. The ABH Prize is a truly Pan-African campaign, reaching applicants all over the continent. APO Group’s team worked to provide a strategic media relations plan for ABH that would generate maximum media coverage and drive applications across Africa.

Despite the vast geographical challenges from the pandemic, the campaign was a huge success. Some of the highlights included: three large media events attended by hundreds of African media; an astounding 94 media interviews secured for ABH spokespeople, judges and entrepreneurs; and a social media promotion campaign that reached more than 29 million people.

This added up to one of the most successful ABH competitions ever with more than 20,000 quality applications, more female entrepreneurs than ever before, and every single African country represented.

“Africa’s Business Heroes is an ambitious project, and to cover all 54 African countries requires extensive Public Relations knowledge and expertise,” said Jason Pau, Executive Director of International, Jack Ma Foundation. “Working with APO Group has always been delightful and effective, and we are thrilled that the campaign as well as the African entrepreneur community it represents, has received the recognition it deserved with this fantastic SABRE award.”

“The Jack Ma Foundation shares our vision for the future of business in Africa, and together our teams have worked tirelessly on raising the profile of the ABH Prize,” said APO Group Founder and Chairman, Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard. “This campaign really caught the public imagination, and has shown the world the vast potential Africa has as a hub for the next generation of entrepreneurs.”

The PRovoke Africa SABRE Awards are Africa’s leading Public Relations Awards

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, May 16, 2022/APO Group/ —

APO Group (www.APO-opa.com), the leading Pan African communications consultancy and press release distribution service, is delighted to announce it has won a prestigious PRovoke Africa SABRE Award for its campaign with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) (www.IOM.int) to reward ethical, responsible reporting of migration in Africa.

The SABRE award recognizes APO Group and IOM’s commitment to improving global perceptions of migration issues in Africa. In tandem, the two organizations coordinated a journalism competition that attracted submissions from all over the continent, with eight winning journalists receiving their awards at a virtual press event that also included a discussion about the challenges of reporting on migration.

The PRovoke Africa SABRE Awards are Africa’s leading Public Relations Awards. Held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the 2022 SABRE Awards attracted more than 2000 entries from Public Relations agencies all over the continent. A jury of industry leaders chaired by PRovoke Media founder Paul Holmes, was looking for campaigns that were brave, authentic, shareable, and caught the public imagination – and the Migration project landed APO Group and IOM the SABRE Award in the ‘Associations’ category.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is part of the United Nations System, and is the leading inter-governmental organization promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. The IOM was established in 1951 and has a global presence in over 100 countries.

IOM’s Regional Office for West and Central Africa commissioned APO Group to launch a competition for African journalists reporting on migration.

The competition (https://bit.ly/3NiMzra) was designed to recognise outstanding stories from the region that shed light on migration from various perspectives, including safe migration, climate change, and returning migrant reintegration.

Of particular importance to both APO Group and IOM was the debunking of false and discriminatory narratives about migration in Africa. The competition called for submissions from journalists with stories that demonstrated balanced, evidence-based reporting, and gave the public a clearer picture of the real issues.

With a peerless reputation for media relations in Africa, and extensive reach into all 54 African countries, APO Group’s project team was able to promote the competition to journalists all over the continent. But with logistical challenges caused by the pandemic, they had to adopt a purely virtual campaign, with the submissions process, press events, and the assembly of four thematic jury panels all coordinated online.

Despite this, the results of the campaign were exceptional, with 230 quality submissions received in English and French, a total PR value generated of more than USD19 million, and the virtual Awards ceremony streamed live on Facebook and YouTube.

“When we started this campaign, it was essential we had a partner who understands African media, and has the depth of contacts to attract submissions across West and Central Africa,” said Mia Barrett, Head of Awareness Raising at IOM’s Regional Office for West and Central Africa. “We are thrilled with this SABRE award as it demonstrates the importance of our mission to change the narrative about migration in Africa.”

“APO Group has always championed fair and balanced reporting, so it is fantastic that we are able to give greater prominence to compelling African stories that provide true insight on migration. We are extremely grateful to the IOM for the opportunity to take part in this campaign, and share in their determination to reward ethical journalism and shine a light on what is an important issue,” said APO Group Founder and Chairman, Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard.

Not only has she shown immense talent and expertise, she has also fundamentally established herself with her clients and team members

CAIRO, Egypt, February 21, 2022/APO Group/ —  APO Group (www.APO-opa.com), the leading Pan-African communications consultancy and press release distribution service, is delighted to confirm the recent promotion of Rania ElRafie to Group Account Director.

ElRafie who is based in Egypt has risen to the new position within less than two years after proving herself to be a consummate professional and dynamic team leader who inspires her colleagues through her dedication and expertise.

Here, we talk to ElRafie about her journey with the APO Group that has seen her grow into the role.

Tell us about your career path and how it led you to becoming part of the APO Group family

In 2003 I joined JWT Group – part of the global WPP organisation – as an internship requirement for attaining my degree from the American University in Dubai. I began in PR from scratch in JWT’s media monitoring division, where I would spend my days scouring the media and putting together reports for clients.

I grew within the organisation to the point where my ability in professional client servicing was soon noticed. I was then made responsible for key accounts, and I began writing English and Arabic press material, while at the same time, developing strong media relations across the Middle East and North Africa regions. I was also responsible for managing global accounts including Diamond Trading Company, DeBeers, Lux Fashion World, Virgin Megastores, MBC Group, Dubai Sports City, AIG, and HSBC within the Buchanan communications group.

After that I joined TBWA Dubai where I worked remotely from Egypt taking the lead on accounts including CNN and P&G brands Gillette and Ariel. I was also responsible for bringing in new business and day-to-day client servicing and management. During that time, I was involved in a lot of CSR activities, specifically with Etihad Airways and the Children’s Cancer hospital in Egypt.

In 2016 I moved onto the role of Corporate Communications and Public Relations Manager for a local real estate developer in Egypt. I handled the corporate comms for the company’s stakeholders, CEO advisory and maintained media relations with local and regional journalists.  Here I played an integral role in crisis management. I left after three years and freelanced for numerous real estate developers who had recognised my expertise and offerings.

In 2020 I was headhunted by the APO Group, and I accepted the role of Account Director where I manage several accounts including Canon, Siemens Gamesa, Vertiv and Web Fontaine. I also support my other team leads on their accounts when needed including NBA, DHL, European Investment Bank, Marriott Hotels amongst others.

What interested you about the APO Group?

I was excited by the prospect of being part of a pan-African organisation who plays a vital part in giving a voice and telling the stories of Africa and its people. APO is a prestigious brand as well as an established name in the industry, delivering Public and Media Relations services on a pan-African scale, and it was something new to me. For the first time as an African I had the opportunity to focus purely on work across the continent. This is where my roots are, and the APO Group’s African narrative attracted me to their vision and offerings. It was an opportunity to promote positive and inspiring news in a field with global players that are all establishing networks across Africa, realising the potential the continent offers.

I have always believed in seeing the bigger picture outside of your clients and understanding the company you work for that aspires to promote and build. The sense of ownership of working with the APO Group brand is thrilling and a key motivator. I represent the APO Group in my country, to my media and to my stakeholders in the Middle East region and in particular, Egypt.

As a part of APO Group, I have realised that we have an amazing continent – it’s made up of 54 countries, boasting in populations that are very diverse. There are nations here that have populations running from 1 million to more than 170 million people who speak over 2,000 languages and dialects. It is important to understand the differences between them – the cultures, the knowledge of the people and states, the uniqueness to each of them. My position has allowed me to build relationships with people across the globe and, despite having to work remotely, I have formed great relations with key stakeholders, clients, media, and APO team members, which is wonderful.

Tell us a bit more about the client challenges you faced after joining APO and how you overcame them

When I took on the role at APO, I had to hit the ground running. The first three months were particularly challenging because I had to learn very quickly about the account I was assigned to and how best to serve the interests and needs of our client, while delivering exceptional work.

But this did not stop me. I began to learn and understand the client, as well as those of their competitors, at the most intricate levels. I laid out objectives and KPIs and identified the key strengths among team players and then aligned tasks to their roles. There was also a lot of strategic thinking that needed to go into building the brand. Soon the results began to show and our expertise in pushing the boundaries, going the extra mile, and delivering excellent work began.

I am extremely proud and privileged to be able to collaborate with a team who not only deliver what is expected, but never fail to impress.

How would you describe yourself as a leader?

My key strengths are my authenticity and my passion for what I do. When you are motivated by passion and responsibility it is always reflected by your team.

I would describe myself as having a high degree of professionalism and work ethic in what I do, and I strictly adhere to quality standards and policies. In my journey with APO, I have managed to build trust with my colleagues, ensure I’m a good listener and offer thanks, praise, and credit when I witness great work.

I work with clear KPIs to ensure consistent delivery within and beyond expectations.  I also focus on identifying and recognising the talents and value in my team members to bring out the best version of themselves.

I was fortunate to have found mentorship in my earlier days at JWT PR. I recall that my direct manager, managing director of JWT PR, always commended me on my ability to excel in the numerous positions I worked in. She was proud of my work ethic – I have always gone that extra mile to deliver the best results – and she would push me to believe in myself and stand out within my area of work.

APO Group Founder and Chairman, Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard, has been a guiding light for me, nurturing my abilities, helping with my contact network, and aligning me with the right stakeholders. It’s clear he is passionate about APO, and he has steered me towards uncovering more about myself and realising my full potential.

I would like to instil the same kind of passion in my team, which can guide them to delivering the best work they can.

What advice would you give those starting in the industry and what tips would you give on successful media relations?

Work with passion! If you love what you do, you allow yourself to think out of the box and colour outside the lines.

I would also say see the big picture – explore your company and understand the business objectives and needs beyond those of knowing your client base. Learn to serve your organisation and fall in love with the brands that you work for.

Relationships are key within our industry and nurturing them with team members, clients, media, and stakeholders is crucial in maintaining presence and understanding who you are working with.

In my professional lifetime, another key learning was multi-tasking and being able to deliver my best work across all my clients. Agency life is fast paced and learning to manage your time and tasks is important in meeting targets and forward planning.

Reacting to ElRafie’s promotion to Group Account Director, APO Group Founder and Chairman, Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard (www.Pompigne-Mognard.com) said: “Rania has been exemplary in her role since joining the APO Group. Not only has she shown immense talent and expertise, she has also fundamentally established herself with her clients and team members. She believes in the vision of the APO Group and has proved time over that her passion runs high for the work that she delivers. I am incredibly proud to have been part of her journey, and she truly deserves this recognition.”

“It is an honour to be identified and acknowledged on a platform like the Standard Bank Top Women Awards. Standard Bank is recognised throughout Africa and the world, and to be heralded and noticed by such an institute is humbling. “What attracted me to the awards was the perspective of women empowerment. I fully support uplifting women and mentoring young minds. The awards showcased women who had defied the odds and made it up the corporate ladder through perseverance and hard work. I want to help the generation behind me and open doors for them. Young women need to speak up, take space and understand that they are valid.”

With her own mentor being her mother, Chiyangwa said that her mum gave her the greatest advice on her life’s journey.

With this close to my heart, I’ve been able to successfully conquer anything I put my mind to.”

Tracy is APO Group’s longest serving Public Relations project manager, and her well-deserved promotion to Account Director reflects her dedication and passion for African journalism

KAMPALA, Uganda, September 27, 2021/ — APO Group (www.APO-opa.com), the leading Pan-African communications consultancy and press release distribution service, is delighted to confirm the recent promotion of Tracy Walakira N. to Account Director.

Operating from her home in Uganda, Tracy has spent the last seven years working on some of APO Group’s most challenging assignments, collaborating with media and coordinating huge events in every corner of Africa, from Eritrea to Somaliland.

It has earned her the nickname ‘Indiana Jones of APO Group’, as Tracy consistently astounds her colleagues with her intrepid media relations work and her ability to facilitate interviews, events and press conferences wherever in Africa her multinational clients need to be.

Here, we talk to Tracy about her life and career at APO Group, charting a journey from modest beginnings to the pinnacle of the African media relations community.

What were you doing prior to joining APO Group?

Before I joined APO Group I was working for the White Ribbon Alliance (WRA), a global advocacy movement for maternal, reproductive and newborn health and rights. My life has been profoundly affected by these issues. I lost both my parents to HIV and spent years caring for my siblings and it has made me incredibly determined to raise awareness in my country on issues affecting society. Journalism is a powerful way of reaching people, so as a journalist, I have always made it my goal to work with the media to inform and educate people about these important issues.

In 2010, APO Group Founder and Chairman, Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard noticed the work I was doing with WRA at the African Union Summit. In a country where 16 women die everyday due to pregnancy and childbirth related causes, our main goal at the time was to engage Ugandan media to help them better understand sensitive issues related to reproductive health so they report effectively to contribute to the reduction of preventable maternal and newborn deaths in the country. I like to be as creative as possible, as it makes a greater impact, so our advocacy events at WRA-Uganda often involved things like poetry, drama, and music as I was then coordinating youth activities. Nicolas recognised the value of this approach to media relations, and as soon as I finished school he asked me to join APO Group to help build similar relationships with media across Africa.

Talk us through your journey with APO Group.

I think I have been on every rung of the ladder! Initially I was hired to bring multinational online content partners across Africa on board. I progressed into Project Management, and then Public Relations work organising media interviews, press conferences and articles. Our main remit is to help clients connect with media all over Africa, but for some organizations, they require more wide-reaching services. For example, Emirates’ sister airline flydubai regularly opened new routes into different African countries. They needed us to be much more than a traditional Public Relations partner. Most of the time, we were organizing every aspect of their inaugural flight events from venue hire to travel and catering.

Tell us a bit more about the work you did with flydubai, and the challenges you faced.

flydubai needed APO Group to facilitate and coordinate inaugural flights in some extremely challenging locations like Eritrea and Somaliland, where it can be very difficult for foreign journalists and Public Relations professionals to even enter the country, let alone coordinate a press event.

It is difficult but rewarding work – and the reason I earned the nickname of the ‘Indiana Jones of APO Group’! It has taught me to be flexible and adapt to the intricacies of every market APO Group is operating in, but it is also where our local knowledge can be put to the best use, because we are not just dealing with media or suppliers, but government ministries and other authorities.

I think projects like this demonstrate APO Group’s genuine Pan-African reach, because if you can manage effective Public Relations activity in Eritrea and Somaliland, you can do it anywhere.

What tips or advice would you give for successful media relations to those who are just starting out?

I have always thought media relations is not about simply pitching to journalists but trying to inspire them by attracting them to a story or an idea. Of course, you also have to build longstanding relationships, and develop trust. At APO Group, we have been successful because we have the largest Pan-African project team, working ‘on the ground’ across Africa, so we can cover the whole continent.

Covering Africa is not like working in a single country market. There are 54 countries, and we have to have deep knowledge of them all. It is a big challenge: Not only do these countries have unique cultures and languages, but they also have very different media landscapes.

Another tip is being able to communicate with journalists in their preferred language. With our team, we can cover the four main languages of Africa (English, French, Arabic and Portuguese), but also dozens of local languages too. For example, I speak Luganda – which is a huge part of the media landscape in Uganda. If you are only communicating in English, with maybe a little French, there are many journalists and media outlets in Africa that will be out of reach.

What are you most proud about in your career at APO Group?

There are lots of things about my work that make me feel lucky. Not many Public Relations professionals in Uganda, Africa, and in many parts of the world get the opportunity to coordinate top-level interviews with influential global organizations like CNN or the BBC. Placing interviews for the Richard Quest show, Quest Means Business on CNN has been a real career highlight, but I’ve also been lucky enough to work with prestigious organizations like the Jack Ma Foundation, Canon, Nestlé, Islamic Development Bank, Huawei, Accor Hotels and the World Health Organization (WHO) among many more.

What still surprises a lot of people is that I have done most of this from my computer at home in Uganda! Many years before COVID, APO Group recognised the value of giving staff the freedom and flexibility to work from home.

On a personal note, I’m also extremely proud to have worked with more than 1000 young people in my home country, educating them on women’s rights and newborn health. I’m so grateful that I am able to continue this important volunteer work alongside my day job with APO Group.

More than 12,000 candidates from all over Africa applied for this year’s competition

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, September 13, 2021/ — For the second consecutive year, The Jack Ma Foundation has invited APO Group Founder and Chairman Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard (www.Pompigne-Mognard.com) to be a semi-final judge for the prestigious Africa’s Business Heroes 2021 competition.

Nicolas will join six other judges in the task of whittling 20 semi-finalists down to just ten – who will then go forward to take part in a televised ‘pitch finale’ to win a share of a prize pool worth $1.5m.

The Jack Ma Foundation launched Africa’s Business Heroes in 2019. Now in its third year, the competition’s mission is to inspire a new movement of African entrepreneurship by showcasing local men and women who are creating positive impact in their communities and beyond. The long-term vision of the Jack Ma Foundation is to provide grant funding, training programs, and broader support for more than 100 African entrepreneurs over the course of a decade.

More than 12,000 candidates from all over Africa applied for this year’s competition, and the semi-final promises to be the most diverse ever, with 11 countries represented across a wide spectrum of key business sectors. 45% of the Top 20 are women, and the average age of the group is just 34.

The semi-final judges will test each entrepreneur’s vision, business plan, and ability to clearly articulate how their businesses can generate positive impact for their local communities.

Nicolas and APO Group share the Jack Ma Foundation’s commitment to championing Africa’s next generation of entrepreneurs. In 2019, Nicolas embarked upon a series of conferences in some of Africa’s most prominent universities. He spoke about entrepreneurship, business and journalism to students in Uganda, Zambia, Senegal, Ethiopia, and South Africa.

Nicolas is also a member of several Advisory Boards, including: the Canada-Africa Chamber of Business (www.CanadaAfrica.ca), an independent, not-for-profit organization with strong working links with both Canadian and African governments; the African Energy Chamber (www.EnergyChamber.org), an organization that fosters greater collaboration between African governments and the private sector in all areas of the energy industry; the Africa Hotel Investment Forum (AHIF) (www.AHIF.com), the premier hotel investment conference in Africa; and the EurAfrican Forum (www.EURAFRICANFORUM.org), an action-oriented platform that aims to foster stronger collaboration between Europe and Africa.

APO Group was founded by Nicolas in 2007, and he has seen it grow from a tiny organization based in his living room, into the leading pan-African communications consultancy and press release distribution service, providing strategic advice to hundreds of multinational organizations in diverse industries.

“I have experienced first-hand how challenging it can be to thrive as an entrepreneur in Africa, but it is also exciting and extremely rewarding,” Nicolas said. “The Jack Ma Foundation is giving an unprecedented opportunity to talented entrepreneurs from all over our continent. Through this fantastic initiative, the finalists will get the chance to pitch their ideas to some of the best business brains on the planet. It is a privilege to be asked to be a part of the wonderful Africa’s Business Hero competition once again.”

TORONTO, Canada, September 8, 2021/ — The Canada-Africa Chamber of Business (www.CanadaAfrica.ca) and APO Group, the leading Pan-African communications consultancy and press release distribution service, today further announced details of the largest ever conference to promote business, trade and investment between Canada and Africa in the organization’s 27-year history.

The Accelerating Africa 2021 conference (https://bit.ly/3gsTfVA) will take place from 26 to 28 October 2021, with a programme of online and in-person events that bring together ministers, CEOs, entrepreneurs, thought leaders and policy makers from Canada and all over Africa.

With a primary focus on Canada’s role in Africa’s economic restart after COVID-19, the conference will address challenges and advance opportunities for greater trade and investment between Canada and the African continent.

APO Group is the Chamber’s Public Relations Strategic partner, and it joins Ivanhoe Mines Ltd, the lead sponsor of the Accelerating Africa 2021 conference, which is open to all for complimentary virtual attendance – thanks to the organization’s generous supporters (register here https://bit.ly/3jPdaAa)

The Chamber joined forces with APO Group earlier this year, and the two organizations have worked together on major engagements in Canada and Africa, following the visit of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to the African Union, the African Continental Free Trade Agreement leadership, and several African heads of state and cabinet ministers.

“Our existing work with APO Group has seen millions of dollars in media exposure across the African continent,” said Sebastian Spio-Garbrah, Chair of the Board of The Canada-Africa Chamber of Business. “We believe APO Group will be key to making a success of the biggest conference in our 27-year history, and our partnership will continue to play an important strategic role in Canada-Africa trade and investment.”

APO Group has a peerless reputation within African media and Public Relations. Through its game-changing partnerships with globally-renowned organizations like Bloomberg and Getty Images, APO Group is able to deliver uniquely African stories to new international audiences, demonstrating to the world that Africa is open for business.

“We see it as our responsibility to ensure Africa gets the international recognition it deserves,” said APO Group Founder and Chairman, Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard ( www.Pompigne-Mognard.com). “The Canada-Africa Chamber of Business is uniquely placed to drive trade and investment opportunities by bringing together all the major stakeholders across both markets. Ultimately, we share the same goal, which is to challenge negative perceptions about Africa and remove barriers to investment. Events like Accelerating Africa 2021 provide the perfect forum for facilitating new conversations and relationships that promote economic success all over Africa.”
