We would like to thank Hemas Consumer and Rainforest Protectors for initiating this project and we look forward to collaborating in the future.”

Hemas Consumer, a leading manufacturer in Sri Lanka’s Home and Personal Care sector in a ground-breaking partnership with Rainforest Protectors Sri Lanka, will join hands to reforest 15 acres of land, in its pioneering efforts to address the deepening environmental crisis.

The partnership was officially declared with the MoU sign-up, which happened at the Hemas Consumer Head Office with the participation of Fiona Juriansz Munasinghe – Director Marketing Hemas Consumer, Azmara Mannan Perera – Marketing Manager Hemas Consumer, Sherlene Gunanayagam – Brand Manager Hemas Consumer, Jayantha Wijesinghe  – Convener & Chief Organizer of Rainforest Protectors and Lakmali Jayaratne – Member, Executive Committee of Rainforest Protectors. Hemas has collaborated in this project with an aim to embed sustainable forest management practices within Sri Lanka and extend its support towards social endeavours to conserve forests.

Hemas Consumer will be monitoring and evaluating the project while providing the due support with guidance and necessary impetus for this timely initiative which increases the forest cover and leads the way to a greener Sri Lanka.

Baby Cheramy and Kumarika, two of the highly renowned personal care brands of Hemas will champion this long term project which will be a catalyst in driving the best practices in forest conservation while maintaining the forested areas for the betterment of the future generation.  Hemas Consumer has a shared vision to foster the forest ecosystem in Sri Lanka and the company has previously supported several reforestation initiatives, including reforesting a land in Kathlana, in close proximity to Sinharaja in a bid to battle the negative impact caused through deforestation.

Speaking on the new partnership, Fiona Juriansz Munasinghe – Director Marketing Hemas Consumer said, “We are excited to partner with Rainforest Protectors to implement this new reforesting initiative which will indeed bode well for Mother Nature. This is only the beginning for us at Hemas Consumer as we have many plans on reforesting and protecting biodiversity. We are in this for the long haul and extremely happy that this partnership provides us the space to see our investments in nature and bio-diversity come to life. Hemas remains entirely committed to boost bio diversity and regenerate ecosystems that ultimately benefit Mother Nature and her inhabitants.”

Hemas pioneers the concept of healthful living with a strong passion for community support initiatives.  Hemas identifies that these collaborative efforts are a call to action in encouraging the public, stakeholders and other authorities to be a part of such nation-wide initiatives.

Rainforest Protectors of Sri Lanka are a group of volunteers and sponsors dedicated to protecting Sri Lanka’s last remaining rainforests through investigation, awareness campaigns, conservation and restoration initiatives. This non-profit environmental organization has been actively engaging in protecting several ecosystems such as Sinharaja and Kanneliya rainforests and through Rain Forest Protectors trust, the group focuses on protecting rainforest lands.

Jayantha Wijesinghe – Convener & Chief Organizer of Rainforest Protectors shared, “We believe that reforestation campaigns can help in conquering adverse scenarios such as loss of bio diversity and habitats. While most tree planting campaigns are temporary, long term reforestation projects like these can be a very effective approach in preserving bio diversity and help in maintaining the forest cover needed for the survival of our future generations.”

Reforestation has proven to be highly beneficial for the earth in multiple ways. Reforested areas become a habitat for wildlife and plants while also helping to restore the endangered species. When trees grow and consume air, they remove the harmful pollutants of air, improving the air quality. Reforestation minimizes the impact of floods and soil erosion while providing fresh water resources. It also ensures that extreme air temperatures are controlled which have a direct impact to the life on earth. Besides, Reforestation is the ultimate weapon against adversities such as global warming and climate action which have the potential to trigger devastating impacts.

Hemas Consumer, a leading manufacturer in beauty and personal care sector, reiterating its commitment to bio-diversity conservation has collaborated with the Wildlife & Nature Protection Society (WNPS) in a scientific mangrove regeneration project within the Anawilundawa Wetland Sanctuary.

Hemas will work closely with the WNPS over a period of three years in implementing necessary measures to restore mangroves in selected blocks of land. The project is also in reasonably close proximity to the Hemas Manufacturing Plant at Dankotuwa. Aided by a holistic approach to mangrove rehabilitation, this 3-year long project will ensure that the restored mangroves are carefully nurtured until they flourish with regular monitoring from all parties.

The Dankotuwa Plant will play an active role in this project through participation and by raising awareness among nearby communities on the importance of restoring mangroves for future generations. The Hemas team along with WNPS, will be instrumental in promoting the participation of local communities in mangrove conservation by conducting awareness sessions. This long-term project comes in to fruition in the backdrop of over 50% of Sri Lanka’s mangrove forests being destroyed during the past 30 years. An important element is also that part of the funding is allocated towards scientific study and continual analysis and measurement of the eco system.

Mangroves are among the most productive ecosystems in the world that shelter and feed thousands of animal species and are said to absorb up to 4x CO2 than tropical forests while shielding the surrounding against storms, tsunamis and floods. They protect the lagoons and the estuaries from erosion, reduce pollution of near-shore coastal waters, provide recreational grounds and opportunities for bird watching, fuel wood and many more. These versatile ecosystems are in danger due to excessive human activity such as construction of shrimp farms, discharge of pollutants, illegal constructions, urbanization and tourism.

Anawilundawa wetland stretches across 1,397 hectares and is one of Sri Lanka’s six designated wetlands by Ramsar convention. Whilst being a sanctuary for hundreds of bird species, fish species and animals, Anawilundawa ecosystem has largely benefited the villagers to earn a living.

Commenting during the MoU sign up between Hemas Consumer and the WNPS, Fiona Juriansz Munasinghe – Director Marketing Hemas Consumer said, “We are indeed honored to partner with Wildlife & Nature Protection Society to initiate this timely project that aims to restore the mangrove ecosystem surrounding Anawilundawa wetland, which is threatened by further human activity. Sri Lanka’s ecological resources are declining exponentially for some period and it is high time that we take necessary action before they slip away from our control. As a company which is extremely conscious about the environment we live in, Hemas has always been leading from the front in nature conservation initiatives, continuously funding and supporting such projects and we will continue to do so in the future as well. This is one of several initiatives we as a truly Sri Lankan company are taking towards environmental protection, plastic reduction, recycling, and improved carbon footprints for all operations.  Baby Cheramy and Kumarika, two of the highly renowned brands of Hemas have been pioneering these projects and they extend the due support as the main sponsors for this project as well, in their efforts to foster a greener Sri Lanka.”

Marine Committee Chair Graham Marshall speaking on behalf of the Wildlife & Nature Protection Society said, “It is observed that Sri Lanka’s Mangrove cover which currently stands at 0.32% of the entire landmass is under further threat. We are extremely happy to be partnering with Hemas in this project and we truly appreciate their commitment to conserve these invaluable ecosystems. This initiative is driven by the Marine Sub Committee of the WNPS who are extremely happy to be a part of this critical project initiated and owned by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Department of Forests and supported by the University of Wayamba. In an island where the sea area is 8 times that of the landmass, it is crucial that there be a much greater focus on marine conservation. The fabric of activity of Marine committee is designed with this in mind. The criticality of our mangrove cover has driven mangrove conservation to the top in the committee’s agenda.”

Hemas Consumer, is a leading manufacturer in Sri Lanka’s Home and Personal Care sector. Hemas started with a simple intent: to help families live healthfully. This core belief has underscored growth for over 70 years. Fernando Charitable Foundation, Sarvodaya Women’s Movement and Sarvodaya-Fusion to educate a wider audience of Sri Lankan women on menstrual health and iron out the long-held myths and misconceptions. While addressing the knowledge gap, this initiative intends to encourage women to use sanitary napkins as researches have found out that majority of menstruating women are non-users of sanitary napkins.

The Arka Initiative is an organization working on sexual and reproductive health issues in Sri Lanka. It is led by a group of young doctors, psychologists, lawyers and researchers. One of the main objectives of the Arka Initiative is to educate and equip young women with the necessary knowledge and tools they need, to ensure menstrual health and hygiene. Fernando Charitable Foundation continuously engages in charitable initiatives to uplift the lives of Sri Lankans and extend support to various communities such as the students with special needs.  Fems intends to expand this awareness campaign to rural villages through Sarvodaya Women’s Movement which is a large network of women spread across the island. The Movement’s years of experience in tackling women’s issues and empowering women by uplifting their knowledge add the necessary momentum to drive this initiative forward. Sarvodaya-Fusion who works on ICT for development initiatives will be instrumental in conducting online awareness sessions on healthful living for women in this digital era.

Hon. I take this opportunity to congratulate Hemas and the partner organizations to make this initiative a success.”

Alongside the nationwide initiative, Fems launched a new sanitary napkin aiming to equip Sri Lankan women with an affordable napkin solution.  Manufactured using a soft cotton top sheet to provide maximum comfort to the user, Fems Aya napkin will soon be available in the market for an affordable price.

Fems Aya initiative will address these concerns related to menstrual health, which prevent women from leading an active lifestyle, and reaching their true potential. As a socially responsible brand that focuses on promoting a healthful nation, Fems through its Fems Aya initiative will work towards creating awareness on menstrual health and hygiene, and empower women in all walks of life.”
