Hemas Hospitals has taken yet another pioneering step forward in enhancing patient care with the introduction of its online Lab Portal – a revolutionary web platform designed to transform the way patients access and manage their lab reports and results. The Lab Portal empowers patients with the convenience of viewing both their historical and recent reports directly on their smartphones, offering a seamless and efficient approach to healthcare management. This is a first for Sri Lanka and underscores Hemas Hospitals’ commitment to digital enablement and patient-centric care.

Discussing this new feature, Dr Dushyanthan Subramaniam, Director of Hemas Labs said, “This innovative portal marks a substantial leap forward in delivering healthcare services to our patients, greatly improving their overall experience by enabling convenient access to their reports. This new facility demonstrates our commitment to ongoing innovation. We believe this is a significant step forward towards seamless, digitally-enabled and proactive healthcare management and invite our patients and the public to take advantage of this tool.”

One of the standout features of the Lab Portal is its provision to showcase the trend of investigations, allowing patients to compare and analyse current results with their previous test results. This not only empowers individuals to track their health progress but also allows doctors to gain a deeper and more holistic understanding of a patient’s medical history.

Using the Hemas Lab Portal is simple, patients simply need to provide their mobile number at the billing counter during lab test payments. Upon completion of the test, a secure SMS containing a link to the report will be sent to the patient. For further protection of privacy, access to medical reports is also secured by an OTP (One-Time Password) received through SMS, guaranteeing the confidentiality of sensitive medical information.

Patients who have shared their mobile numbers for billing since 2018 can access a comprehensive archive of their lab reports. Moreover, the Lab Portal extends its functionality to allow individuals to view reports of their loved ones, such as parents or children, if that phone number is also provided during billing.

Confidently embracing the digital era, Hemas Hospitals assures patients that lab reports will be stored securely in the cloud for a lifetime. This eliminates concerns about losing physical copies and offers a sustainable solution by minimizing the use of paper materials, aligning with the hospital’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact. This also provides peace of mind for patients as they do not need to physically track and carry their reports.

In Sri Lanka, Hemas Hospitals has pioneered the adoption of Electronic Health Records (ERH) – paperless health records that allow for utmost privacy, combined with instant accessibility, allowing for superior and efficient, timely and precise, personalized patient care. Accordingly, Hemas Hospitals’ Lab Portal stands as the sole platform offering patients access to both their lab reports and historical trends in results. This advancement aligns with the hospital’s dedication to enhancing patient-centric care through technology, ensuring that individuals can actively engage in managing their health with ease and efficiency.

Breast cancer is a global concern, and Sri Lanka is no exception to this alarming trend. Every 14 seconds, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide, and early detection is crucial for a 100% cure rate. With 2.3 million women suffering from breast cancer worldwide in 2020, and 685,000 lives lost, the time for action is now.

Recognizing the gravity of this issue, with 4,500 new cases detected in Sri Lanka in 2019 alone, Hemas Hospitals is stepping up to make a difference during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which falls each year during October, with a special awareness drive called “BreastOber”. In particular, the effort aims to raise awareness about the importance of early detection, which is possible through Hemas Hosptals’ pain-free mammogram technology. With this advanced technology there is no need for women fear any discomfort during the procedure.

As Sri Lanka’s most loved healthcare brand and a socially responsible corporate citizen, Hemas Hospitals has taken it upon itself to educate and raise awareness among the general public about breast cancer. Beyond creating awareness, “BreastOber” also encourages women to take proactive steps towards early detection and prevention. In fact, the public can call the Hemas Hospitals BreastOber Hotline on 0777-001216 and book a free consultation – the BreastOber Clinic is open every day from 7.30am to 3.30pm. During #BreastOber, Hemas Hospitals is also offering a special 30% discount on its cutting-edge mammograms.

“BreastOber” is also helping to raise awareness about the importance of mammograms, a highly effective tool in detecting breast cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage. Hemas Hospitals takes pride in providing all Sri Lankans with access to the latest technologically advanced mammogram systems, which can detect breast cancer even before it can be detected by a hands-on physical examination.

Despite the advantages of mammograms, many women still have the misconception that they may cause discomfort. However, this is no longer a concern as one of the significant advantages of Hemas Hospitals’ cutting-edge mammogram systems is that they ensure minimal discomfort and pain, making the screening process less daunting for women. This is providing reassurance for many women in Sri Lanka that early detection does not have to be an uncomfortable experience.

Hemas Hospitals recognizes that some individuals are more prone to breast cancer than others. Those with a family history of breast cancer, women in high-stress positions, and middle-aged and older women are at higher risk. Through “BreastOber”, its aim is to reach out to these demographics specifically, encouraging them to consider regular mammograms as a preventive measure. Hemas Hospitals complete ecosystem, from diagnosis to surgical intervention and pre- and post-op counselling for all patients who test positive, is revolutionizing how breast cancer is detected and treated in Sri Lanka.

Delaying the identification of breast cancer can have dire consequences, potentially leading to unfortunate eventualities and the untimely loss of a loved one. As the cancer progresses, it can spread to other organs, causing unbearable pain for the patient. This is why early detection through mammograms is a key to effective treatment and a high survival rate.

Dr Lakith Peiris, Managing Director at Hemas Hospitals, sums up the significance of “BreastOber” saying, “Our purpose is to make healthful living happen. This extends beyond our patients to the communities we serve. With ‘BreastOber’, we want to emphasize that early detection is the cornerstone of successful breast cancer prevention. We invite every Sri Lankan to join in our effort to create awareness and minimize the negative impacts of this disease, which is entirely curable, but only if it is detected early.”

March 30th, 2023: In a concerted effort to ensure healthcare equity for all Sri Lankans, the country’s foremost trusted private healthcare provider Hemas Hospitals introduced ‘Upakara’, an unmatched timely initiative which offers free monthly dialysis cycles to a selected number of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients from low-income backgrounds, through Hemas Hospitals.

Hemas Hospitals’ Upakara is a one-of-a-kind initiative, contributing to the health and wellbeing of individuals from underprivileged and less fortunate communities, who are suffering from CKD. While most individuals face difficulties with affording basic healthcare during the country’s perilous economic situation, this facility will be considered a life-saving, monumental effort from a private healthcare provider, contributing on a national level.

“Chronic Kidney Disease is one among the most prevalent non-communicable diseases in Sri Lanka. Statistically, 20-25 percent of diabetic patients and 18-20 percent of patients with hypertension are prone to CKD. Holistically, one in 10 Sri Lankans is estimated to have CKD, while the vast majority is unaware of the fact that they have it, resulting in most patients seeking healthcare support at its late-stages. This forces CKD patients to either opt for kidney transplants or regular dialysis treatments, both bearing an intense level of financial burden on patients and their loved ones. Given the volatile macro-economic environment in the country today, this financial burden is heavier than ever before,” stated Dr. Lakith Peiris, Managing Director Hemas Hospitals.

“A statistically higher number of CKD patients from the underprivileged communities who are affected by fewer resources prompted us to address this issue by extending our support to these communities with essential infrastructure and services through Hemas Hospitals’ Upakara initiative,” he added.

CKD is fast becoming a major public health concern, attracting increased global attention due to rapid spread of the disease, and its grave impact on patients and their quality of life. With a larger number of CKD patients reported from Sri Lanka each year, the national healthcare system often finds it difficult to cater to the full requirement of all patients requiring dialysis, affecting their health and wellbeing on a large scale. With the aim of ensuring good governance and community participation, Upakara will be overseen and operated by a governance committee inclusive of key opinion leaders within the hospital and communities.

With a vision of ‘Making Healthful Living Happen’, Hemas Hospitals intends to support CKD patients in a manner that eases the great financial burden that falls on them every month and enhances their access to life-saving dialysis treatment. At a time in the country when macro-economic volatility has destabilized personal economies, Upakara will lend greatly to easing the financial pressure of healthcare on these chronic patients and enable them to re-establish a sense of wellbeing.

“Therefore, in such a dire context, we believe Upakara is an important step forward in assuring health and healthcare equity in Sri Lanka, and consider it our duty as a responsible healthcare provider to ensure that all Sri Lankans have access to the life-saving treatment they require regardless of their financial background. Upakara was therefore borne with this vision, and we consider ourselves privileged to launch this vital CSR programme as we continue to work to eliminate disparities in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases in Sri Lanka,” stated Dr. Peiris.

March 24, 2023: With the rising number of breast cancer cases among women in Sri Lanka, one of the country’s leading private healthcare providers, Hemas Hospitals, introduced its new, state-of-the-art Selenia Dimensions mammography system in an effort to combat the growing trend and facilitate advanced detection and prevention capabilities for patients.

Cancers are considered to be among the top natural causes for human mortalities, and breast cancer has been leading the charts as the highest recorded type of cancer among women. This global epidemic also reflects its presence in Sri Lanka, as similar results have been drawn in terms of recorded cases and overall statistics.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer accounts for 13.4 percent of the total recorded cases of cancer in Sri Lanka in 2020. Among all women diagnosed with cancer, 25.7 percent are breast cancer, and in 2020, a total of 3,975 breast cancer cases were recorded.

With a shortfall of essential facilities and general awareness on breast cancer in Sri Lanka, the country suffers an alarming 42.5 percent mortality rate for breast cancer patients.

Similarly, in a global context, over 2.26 million cases of breast cancer were recorded in 2020, accounting for 12.5 percent of all recorded cancers around the world. Breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in women and the most common cancer overall.

Moreover, based on WHO data, breast cancer has developed a mortality rate of 30.3 percent, a risk faced by women diagnosed with breast cancer, which accounts for 25.8 percent of all cancers recorded among women.

While early detection and treatment is advanced in most developed countries, Sri Lanka is still facing the challenge of a lack of sufficient detection technology, as well as over-burdened government healthcare facilities in that sector, which has evidently shown that the country’s breast cancer survival rates have been relatively low due to delays in diagnosis and treatment.

Consequently, Hemas Hospitals took proactive action to contribute towards minimizing the growing risk of breast cancer by introducing a new mammogram system at its Wattala premises on March 23rd 2023, which was unveiled by Hemas Group Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director Kasturi C. Wilson.

“As we unveil the latest addition at Hemas Hospitals,  a state of the art mammogram machine with the latest 3D technology, we mark a significant milestone in our commitment to women’s health. This machine which also has the ability to perform biopsies will allow the detection of early signs of breast cancer, enabling timely treatment and care. We encourage all women to prioritize their health and undergo regular mammogram screenings, as early detection is the key to successful treatment,” she noted.

The mammogram system obtained by the hospital is a Selenia Dimensions System 6000 Package. Its 3D MAMMOGRAPHY imaging capabilities set new standards for earlier detection of breast cancers and clearer lesion images, allowing for easy and accurate detection, well before anything can be felt by hand.

In essence, a mammogram is an X-ray image of the breast which doctors use to detect any early signs of breast cancer, and in some cases, the presence of a growing cancer in the breast can be detected up to three years before it can be physically felt. Most healthcare professionals opt for performing mammograms, as it has proven to be an excellent tool to spot breast cancer.

For the first time, patients in the Gampaha district can save time and money as they are no longer required to travel to Colombo, and don’t have to undergo uncomfortable and painful screening sessions from existing mammogram facilities in Sri Lanka.

Hemas Hospitals is confident that with its newly introduced mammogram facility, the hospital will not only lessen the burden for state-run hospitals, but will also enhance patient experience and satisfaction by offering a premium, safe and patient-centric service throughout all stages of their diagnosis, detection and treatment.

Furthermore, Hemas Hospitals Managing Director Dr. Lakith Peiris said: “The new state-of-the-art mammogram system has undoubtedly increased our capabilities to deal with breast cancer with the highest accuracy and confidence. We are excited to lead this evolution in Sri Lanka’s private healthcare sector, and look forward to other innovations and state-of-the-art technologies that Hemas Hospitals will introduce in the near future.”

Hemas Hospitals is now fully geared towards establishing the full ecosystem around breast cancer treatment. The newly introduced Breast Screening Clinic offers a variety of women’s wellness packages, and the capacity to provide necessary treatment, including surgical interventions on identified breast cancers.

• The novel center boasts a world-class setup key to successful, safe transplants

September 22nd, 2022: Sri Lanka’s most trusted private healthcare provider Hemas Hospitals, recently announced the introduction of a dedicated kidney transplant unit to its hospital in Wattala. This makes it the only purpose-built, up-to-date kidney transplant of its kind in Gampaha District, operated by an elite squad of consultant nephrologists and consultant transplant surgeons, supported by specially trained Medical Officers and dedicated nursing staff.

The dedicated renal transplant unit consists of positive pressure rooms to accommodate the recipients and operated under strict infection control guidelines, resulting in improved clinical outcomes and recovery time while reducing the potential of cross infections – a critical factor in measuring the success of a transplant procedure. As a leader in the private healthcare sector and an institution known for its advanced multispecialty capabilities.

Hemas Hospitals guarantees exceptional and safe clinical outcomes for all patients through its latest transplant unit. The novel Centre is geared with state-of-art technology to facilitate the efficient transfer of post-operative patients from theatre to the transplant unit facility to allow the family members of the transplant patients to visit them subject to strict infection control guidelines.

This addition will further strengthen the healthcare capacity of the country and bring enhanced levels of healthcare for CKD patients in the country – empowering them with the care and expertise they require efficiently to overcome the challenges of complex transplant surgeries.

“Chronic Kidney Disease is one among the most prevalent non-communicable diseases in Sri Lanka. While 1 in 10 Sri Lankans are estimated to have CKD, about 90% are purported to be unaware of the fact that they have it, resulting in most patients having to seek healthcare support at its later stages, through kidney transplants or frequent dialysis treatments. However, we realized that there is a noticeable gap in the country’s capacity to cater to the full needs of patients requiring transplants. This is the gap we set out to fulfill with our new clinically-advanced transplant unit.

“We’re now able to cater to the needs of CKD patients with even greater expertise and superior clinical outcomes, in addition to our existing exceptional portfolio of services, while it also reflects our commitment towards nephrology and transplant as an anchor specialty. This addition further validates Hemas Hospitals as a leader within the nation’s healthcare sector, in our proactive approach to meet the evolving needs of patients in every corner of Sri Lanka.” stated Dr. Lakith Peiris, Managing Director Hemas Hospitals.

With a vision of ‘Making Healthful Living Happen’, Hemas Hospitals intends to continue to support Sri Lanka’s CKD patients in a manner that makes accessing life-saving care efficient, safe and more convenient at every stage, with notable additions and upgrades to its service offering.

The Hemas Group of Hospitals is fully geared and on track to offer best-in-class, end-to-end healthcare solutions to touch the lives of over 10 million Sri Lankans by 2030. The hospital chain delivers affordable and easily accessible services with superior clinical outcomes and customer experiences consistently across the year. September 23rd, 2022: Marking an important day for healthcare and medical safety, Hemas Hospitals commemorated Patient Safety Day 2022 on September 17, 2022. This year, the theme for Patient Safety Day is ‘Medication Safety’.

Hemas Hospitals has been a definite force in Sri Lanka’s healthcare space, showing strict and comprehensive adherence and a clear cut dedication to safety standards and protocols. The hospital is well known for its efforts, as it has shown time and time again, achieving international recognitions and accreditations- a first for hospitals in Sri Lanka.

Spearheading its drive for unconditional safety adherence is Dr. Malith B. Atapattu, Head of Medical Services and General Manager for Quality, Health and Safety at Hemas Hospitals and its Laboratory Chain.

“Saying that patients are in good hands with us is an understatement. The effort we at Hemas Hospitals put into ensuring patient safety is far beyond the minimum requirement, and we pride ourselves on being able to accomplish this feat and benchmark new standards and levels across the industry,” noted Dr. Atapattu,

“There is no doubt that patient safety is one of our main goals in maintaining our standards. We strive to properly identify patients with unhindered communication, and emphasize on medication safety, infection safety, control safety and surgical safety,” he added.

At Hemas Hospitals, patients are issued a unique identification number before proceeding with any procedures, which requires the patients’ NIC number or Passport number to leaves no room for error. The hospital utilizes electronic and online mediums to store health records and other documents, and is also in the works of developing a bio-identification system, which will be based on either fingerprints or facial recognition.

In terms of medication safety, the hospital is known to be extremely thorough, conducting routine audits, and taking quick corrective actions where necessary based on the audits. Hemas Hospitals is also the only hospital in the country to appoint a full-time clinical pharmacy and pharmacist who directly reports to Dr. Atapattu and clinical heads of the hospital.

Medication safety is also a quality indicator which is monitored closely and discussed at the board level at Hemas. The clinical pharmacist is guided by a panel of expert consultants. The medical advisory committee comprises of medical administrators who discuss medication safety with the consultants, deeming a practical and effective approach to medication safety.

A relative level of emphasis is placed on infection safety, control safety and surgical safety, and the hospital is keen on maintaining a competitive attitude among units within the hospital to create a competitive quality culture, as it annually recognizes best unit for its efforts in adhering to established standards and guidelines.

Hemas Hospitals was the only hospital to receive the COVID Safety Certificate, and in addition to adhering to the World Health Organization’s guidelines, was also the first internationally accredited hospital, being bestowed with ACHSI accreditation (Australian Council of Health Services International).

“Our good practices are what benefit our patients. Our strict adherence to safety guidelines and our rapid pursuit to change these guidelines according to those issued by these bodies is what gave us these certifications. We didn’t achieve all this just for the namesake. We are very well beyond the standards issued for COVID and other health segments, and will continue to raise the bar in standards within the healthcare space,” concluded Dr, Atapattu.
