Perera & Sons Bakers (P&S), Sri Lanka’s largest quick service restaurant chain, recently sponsored the Hill Club Annual Open Ranking Tennis Event for the 2nd consecutive year. A long-standing supporter of tennis, badminton, table tennis and other sporting events, including school-level tournaments, P&S began its association with the Hill Club Annual Open Ranking Tennis Event last year, when it was held after a multiyear hiatus as a result of the global pandemic.

The Hill Club Annual Open Ranking Tennis Event is a category 2 tournament and one of the most highly anticipated events in Sri Lanka’s tennis calendar. As a result, the event witnessed enthusiastic participation, with 700+ individual entries across 17 events. This is the first time the event has received this many entries, attesting to its growing popularity. Accordingly, due to the large number of entries this year, the Qualifying Rounds and First Rounds were held in Colombo, whilst the key matches were played during April 2024, at the picturesque Hill Club Courts in Nuwara Eliya.

Discussing the significance of the event and P&S’s commitment to sports, Manging Director, Gihan Perera said, “This sponsorship reflects our dedication to supporting communities by promoting sportsmanship and excellence in Sri Lanka. That’s because we believe in the power of sports to unite communities, inspire individuals, and instil valuable life lessons. Through partnerships with events like the Hill Club Annual Open Ranking Tennis Event, we strive to inspire the next generation of athletes and create lasting legacies both on and off the court. I take this opportunity to congratulate the winners, and also to acknowledge the hard work, dedication, and diligence of the Hill Club team, under the leadership of General Manager Mr. Michael Armstrong. Their support has been instrumental in ensuring the seamless execution of this prestigious event!”

A number of local tennis stars and upcoming names shone at the tournament. Accordingly, Apna Perera won a Triple Crown. He beat Chathurya Nilaweera 2 sets to nil in the Men’s Open Singles, partnered with Zaidh Zihar to beat Ashen Silva and Srinath Udayachandra 2 sets to 1 in the Men’s Open Doubles, and partnered with Inuki Jayaweera to beat Dhilvan Herath and Hasali Gajaba 2 sets to 1 in the Mixed Doubles event, in order to achieve this remarkable feat. Meanwhile, Dinara De Silva, the current Sri Lanka Women’s National Champion won the Women’s Open Singles title, beating Saajida Raazick 2 sets to nil.

General Manager at Hill Club Nuwara Eliya, Michael Armstrong added, “As always it was an honour to be the host of this much-anticipated tennis event. Thanks to the exceptional support rendered by P&S, and our other sponsors, the event concluded very successfully, leaving an indelible mark on Sri Lanka’s tennis scene. We are also encouraged to note record participation this year, and look forward to continuing this trend into the future.”

The Prize Giving was held on the final day of the Hill Club Annual Open Ranking Tennis Event, which fell on the 12th of April 2024. The prizes were handed out amidst much fanfare, with a number of distinguished guests and dignitaries in attendance. Notable dignitaries included Mr. C. P. R. Perera (Past President & Senior Member of the Club), Mr. Hemaka Amarasuriya (President of the Hill Club Committee & Chairman of C. W. Serving approximately 1,000 villagers daily, the RO plant now stands as a symbol hope, enhancing the daily wellbeing of the community. Spearheaded by P&S, this initiative marks a significant milestone in addressing the fundamental need for clean water in rural Sri Lanka. I am also very glad to note that this initiative aligns with UN SDG 6 – clean water and sanitation for all. We remain committed to looking out for our communities and look forward to more such efforts in the future.”

The ‘Lebanan Chef’ – Arabic Food restaurant recently commenced its operations at No. 56, Galle Road, Colombo 3, with the aim of giving Sri Lankans as well as tourists from around the world the opportunity to taste authentic Arabic food.  A grand event to declare open the restaurant, which was presided over by the Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara, was also attended by diplomatic officials representing the Middle East region. This is the first restaurant opened by Lebanan Chef Private Limited, and it however expects to expand its restaurant network to many tourist attractions in the country in the future.

‘Lebanan Chef’, which offers a full range of traditional Arabic cuisines, is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and it is unique that all its chefs are hailing from Arabic countries. Its Founder and Managing Director, Buddhi Pradeep Niyadandupola said that the restaurant was opened at a time when Sri Lanka’s tourism industry is gradually recovering, especially targeting tourists from the Middle East. “There are many direct flights to Sri Lanka every week from many countries in the Middle East region, which is very close to Sri Lanka. There is a high potential of bringing more tourists to Sri Lanka from the Middle East which has a large population. Millions of Sri Lankans have been working in the Middle East for about 40 years, so there is a close relationship between the people of those countries and Sri Lankans. A large number of Arab tourists visit this country every year. There is a strong need for a network of Arabic restaurants spread across the island to allow them to enjoy their own food. It is to fill that gap that ‘Lebanan Chef’ restaurant was opened in Colombo 3.” he further said.

Colombo, July 19th 2022: The nation’s most trusted and favoured international restaurant franchise Pizza Hut Sri Lanka, recently launched a powerful new initiative named ‘Hut Cyclist’, in a bid to mitigate the challenges of the fuel crisis in the country while simultaneously enriching the communities in which it operates. The novel ‘Hut Cyclist’ initiative enables any individual with a bicycle to join the Pizza Hut Sri Lanka delivery team to carry out deliveries as paid independent contractors.

All those who join the Pizza Hut delivery force will receive 217 LKR per delivery in addition to the tips they will earn on duty. Riders have the liberty of choosing the hours and outlets they prefer, and are also treated to complimentary meals and drinks from Pizza Hut during their time of service. Additionally, the company also provides each rider with a personal accident cover of one million LKR, to cover any potential accidents during their contract period with Pizza Hut. Each rider will be thoroughly prepped in dispensing exceptional levels of customer service and clad comfortably in the brand’s uniform before being positioned in the field.

“When the going gets tough, the tough get going. This is our war cry. With the deepening fuel crisis in Sri Lanka, our entire operation, similar to many F & B businesses on the island faced numerous operational challenges. However, as a responsible employer and trusted consumer brand that is close to the hearts of many Sri Lankans, we had no choice but to adapt and forge ahead with our operations as creatively and resiliently as possible, while simultaneously uncovering avenues to support and rebuild our communities during this challenging period. Hut Cyclist was birthed at this intersection of innovation and resilience.

“Ultimately, Hut Cyclist will be a novel experience for all, and will give our team and all our new riders the rare opportunity to experience unforgettable, powerful customer moments driven by a sense of community, patriotism and empathy. Our consistent success as a brand is also attributed to the sheer grit, passion and dedication of our powerful workforce of over 3000 employees who took it upon themselves to go the extra mile for both the brand and the customers who have patronized Pizza Hut for over 29 years. Therefore, I welcome each and every Sri Lankan to take advantage of this new challenge and be a part of a world-class workforce of a global brand to not only earn passive income but get fit doing so,” Pizza Hut Sri Lanka Director of People & Culture Kaushal Mendis opined.

So far, Hut Cyclist has seen the participation of a growing number of employees from Pizza Hut’s corporate team, including those from its People and Culture department led by its Director, Kaushal Mendis and the Hut Cyclist Initiative – Project Lead & HR Assistant Shenal Perera. With the announcement of Hut Cyclist on the 8th of July, 2022, over 700 inquiries have already come through from cycling enthusiasts across the island, while over 100+ riders have already been prepped, educated and deployed out into the field. This zero-carbon footprint project is ultimately expected to open the doors to a sustainable and permanent, alternative delivery channel within the nation.

Commenting on the same, Pizza Hut Sri Lanka HR Assistant and Hut Cyclist Project Lead Shenal Perera stated, “We are extremely delighted to launch the Hut Cyclist initiative, and are ecstatic at how well it has been received by hundreds of interested cyclists. Apart from its generous financial benefits from both our set rate per delivery and tips from customers, it’s a very flexible, rewarding experience that we offer. Cyclists can pick the outlet, time and hours they prefer, and are thereafter fully prepped to tackle any job-related challenge. Right now, we are looking to expand this project beyond its current scope and make way for a number of exciting new initiatives to further inspire cyclists to join the ranks of a global brand.”

For over 29 years, Pizza Hut Sri Lanka has consistently proven its position as superior food delivery partner in the country; offering meals of superior quality in the shortest amount of time, and dispensed by a highly dedicated workforce skilled in providing exceptional levels of customer service. Being the leading and largest restaurant company in Sri Lanka, Pizza Hut is patronized by millions of Sri Lankans across the island. During the global pandemic, both Pizza Hut and its sister company Taco Bell, both franchises owned by Gamma Pizzakraft Sri Lanka, were admired for their commitment to adhere to high standards of products quality, safety, consistency and delivery – earning a reputation as two of the most trusted food and beverage brands in the country.

18th July 2022, Colombo: Perera & Sons (P&S), Sri Lanka’s foremost Quick Service Restaurant facility provider, recently reached a significant milestone in its long journey as it celebrated its 120th Anniversary.  The occasion stands as a testament to the organization’s long standing commitment and history, in efforts to uplift the local community through its products, services and overall social responsibility.

In 1902, P&S started as a humble little bakery by K.A. Charles Perera from the remote southern village of Kodagoda. During the course of its successful 120 years, P&S has flourished from a single bakery store to a chain of over 180 outlets operating in 7 provinces around the island. The retail outlet takes pride in producing every great-tasting item of food on its list with care and with a continued commitment to quality. A pioneer and leader in bakery art, P&S has transformed from an era where products were sold door-to-door to becoming a household name sold across all corners of Sri Lanka, predominantly due to its rapid progression in automation, innovation and branch operations synchronizing simultaneously over time with its range of tasty products.

Commenting on the milestone anniversary, Gihan Perera, CEO/Managing Director of Perera & Sons stated, “The 120th anniversary is indeed a momentous occasion for us, and we are immensely proud and thankful to each member of our driving workforce for their passion, commitment and dedication leading up to this date. We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone and look forward to the future.”

The 180+ P&S outlets across the country are served by a network of 12 well-equipped and hygienic production units in key locations. In certain areas, the company sources some of its raw materials from local farmers thereby helping them to earn greater profits and improve their livelihoods. P&S takes pride in putting a great deal of care into producing each and every item they sell. That strong commitment helps them to ensure that the customer gets the same high quality product from any P&S outlet in the country. P&S has also joined hands with delivery platforms such as Uber Eats, PickMe Food and Appigo, to ensure that customers can always conveniently access their high quality eats and treats, from the comfort of the home or office.

Over the years, P&S has successfully carried out a number of CSR Programs through its “Manumehewara” initiative which aims to uplift the lives of Sri Lankans in all parts of the country. These programs are all aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals such as Clean Water and Sanitization, Reduced Inequalities, and Responsible Consumption and Production. Under this initiative, the company has donated a Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant to the Dialysis Unit of the Trincomalee District Base Hospital and the Gamini Vidyalaya Kudawilachchiya, in the Anuradhapura District. In addition to this, P&S has also established a comprehensive internal waste management programme for a cleaner and greener environment, ensuring that no harmful or hazardous effluents are released into the environment and waste collected from our factories and outlets is sent for recycling.

For several decades, P&S has helped support sports in Sri Lanka by sponsoring several major sporting events including tennis, badminton, table tennis, golf and cricket. In recent years, P&S has stepped forward to boost Esports in Sri Lanka and take the brand to today’s youth and young adults who are heavily engaged in Esports by partnering with Gamer.LK to successfully conduct Esports tournaments.

P&S deployed state-of-the-art technology to enhance its supply chain management by partnering with Dialog Enterprise, the corporate solutions arm of Dialog Axiata PLC, to deploy Smart Fleet, a practical solution for fleet management. This enables the monitoring of key environmental conditions and also vehicle telematics ensuring the safety of goods, the fleet and the staff. P&S has been ranked among the Top 5 service providers in the fast-food category and to be the only brand with a Sri Lankan origin to do so at the Win a Gold Medal with Excellence at IKA Culinary Olympics, P &S also bagged a Merit Award at the SLIM Restart Resilience Awards 2020, highlighting the company’s success in overcoming pandemic challenges in order to continue to serve the needs of all Sri Lankans.

P&S will continue to maintain the quality of its products as a tribute to its loyal customers who have always kept faith in them. It is this relationship that has been the key catalyst behind its legacy brand and unprecedented corporate success.

Glancing ahead into the newest decade of P&S journey, the company plans to increase its retail footprint and also expand operations to Modern Trade across the island while also venturing into the export markets of Australia, USA and the UAE.
