The Swadeshi Industrial Works PLC, the pioneer and the market leader in herbal personal care products in one of its community support initiatives recently sponsored the “Aloka Poojawa” of the historic Attanagalla Raja Maha Viharaya. “Swadeshi Khomba Aloka Puja Sathkaraya” is a concept of Swadeshi Chairperson Ms. Amari Wijewardene.

Situated in the Gampaha district, Attanagalla Raja Maha Viharaya historically recognized as the place where a Bodhisattva Sri Sangabodhi, made the great sacrifice fulfilling a parami. Known by the name of King Sri Sangabodhi (247-249 A.D.) he was recognized in the chronicles and other ancient literature of Sri Lanka as the most pious Buddhist king in Sri Lankan history. After King Sri Sangabodhi, his brother Gotabhaya (249-262 A.D.) became the king of the country and built a Stupa at the place where his brother, Bodhisattva Sri Sangabodhi, made the great sacrifice fulfilling a parami. The temple is an important archaeological site that includes a Vatadage, the only classical round temple in Sri Lanka that is still intact, though modified in modern times.

The “Aloka Pooja” was carried out under the theme, “Swadeshi Khomba Aloka Puja Sathkaraya”, during the annual Esala festival.

Aluthnuwara Sri Dadimunda Maha Devalaya was built during the Dambadeniya period. It is believed that when King Parakramabahu II was passing through Aluthnuwara on his way to Sri Pada, he was very impressed with the place and decided to donate the property to the temple. The original Uthpalawarna Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya, which was destroyed by the Portuguese was built by King Dhapulusen in 661 AD. According to Buddhist literature, the Buddha before he passed away had asked the God ‘Shakra’ to protect Buddhism in Sri Lanka. God ‘Shakra’ had entrusted this duty to the God ‘Uthpalawarna Sri Vishnu’. Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya is the repository for the Sacred Tooth Relic for 11 years in Sri Lankan history (from 1581 AD to 1592 AD). It was built in the 13th century in the reign of King Parakramabahu II. Deraniyagala Saman Devalaya, the ancient temple is a treasure for the area. The legend of this devalaya belongs to the era of King Rajasinghe 11. Dambadeniya Raja Maha Viharaya was built in the reign of King Parakramabahu II. The Dalada Perahera was begun to pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic, which was kept there for 13 years.

The 2023 Esala festivals of the Kataragama Kiri Vehera and the Ruhunu Kataragama Maha Devalaya, two important places of worship in Sri Lanka, are being illuminated by The Swadeshi Industrial Works PLC the pioneer herbal – personal care products manufacturer. The illumination is done under the theme of “Swadeshi Khomba Aloka Puja Sathkaraya”

The on-going events began on June 19th and end on July 04th 2023, and Swadeshi is sponsoring the Aloka Poojawa for the 22nd consecutive year.

Ms. Amari Wijewardene, Chairperson of Swadeshi said that as a Sri Lankan owned company, we consider it a duty to safeguard the culture and traditional heritage of Sri Lanka by supporting activities such as this annual Aloka Poojawa.

Parallel to “Swadeshi Khomba Aloka Puja Sathkaraya” Swadeshi conducted “Swadeshi Khomba Baby Mathru Sathkaraya” program at Medical Office of Health, Kataragama. Swadeshi Khomba Baby donated essential baby personal care needs for 100 pregnant mothers.

According to the Mahavamsa, Kiri Vehera was built by King Mahanaga in a commemoration of the Buddha’s visit to Kataragama Kihiri Uyana to deliver dharma during his third visit to Sri Lanka

The Swadeshi Industrial Works PLC the pioneer herbal – personal care products manufacturer once again illuminated the Devundara Uthpalawarna Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya along with Mahanuwara Sri Maha Visnu Devalaya. The “Aloka Pooja” was carried out under the theme, “Swadeshi Khomba Aloka Puja Sathkaraya”, during the annual Esala festival. Mahanuwara Sri Maha Visnu Devalaya was illuminated by Swadeshi for the 03rd consecutive year.

Ms. Amari Wijewardene, Chairperson of Swadeshi said that as a Sri Lankan owned company, we consider it a duty to safeguard the culture and traditional heritage of Sri Lanka by supporting activities such as this annual Aloka Poojawa.

She further observed that, Swadeshi illuminates’ places of worship in the country for the benefit of all worshippers and also to educate the younger generation on the importance of safeguarding the country’s heritage. The illumination is followed by a colourful cultural pageant which highlights Sri Lankan traditions and history.

The original Uthpalawarna Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya, which was destroyed by the Portuguese was built by King Dhapulusen in 661 AD. According to Buddhist literature, the Buddha before he passed away had asked the God ‘Shakra’ to protect Buddhism in Sri Lanka. God ‘Shakra’ had entrusted this duty to the God ‘Uthpalawarna’- meaning “colour blue” resembling the colour of God ‘Vishnu’, hence the Devundara Devalaya is known as the Uthpalawarna Sri Vishnu Deva Mandiraya.

Mahanuwara Sri Maha Vishnu Devalaya is one of the Hatara Devale in the Kandy, having a long association with the Royal Palace ( Maha Vasala) and the Temple of Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa).

In 2013 the ‘Sri Dalada Maligawa’ of historic Dambadeni Raja Maha Viharaya, where the sacred tooth relic was kept and the ancient murals were renovated by Swadeshi Chairperson Ms. Amari Wijewardene to bring back its past glory.

The 2022 Esala festivals of the Kataragama Kiri Vehera and the Ruhunu Kataragama Maha Devalaya, two important places of worship in Sri Lanka, are being illuminated by The Swadeshi Industrial Works PLC the pioneer herbal – personal care products manufacturer. The illumination is done under the theme of “Swadeshi Khomba Aloka Puja Sathkaraya”

The on-going events began on July 29th and end on Aug 11th 2022, and Swadeshi is sponsoring the Aloka Poojawa for the 21st consecutive year.

The Swadeshi Industrial Works PLC, the pioneer and the market leader in herbal personal care products in one of its community support initiatives recently sponsored the “Aloka Poojawa” of the historic Wariyapola, Kolambagama Miyugunarama Rajamaha Viharaya on the Poson Full Moon Poya day, “Swadeshi Khomba Aloka Puja Sathkaraya” is a concept of Swadeshi Chairperson Ms. Amari Wijewardene.

Situated in the Kurunegala district, the Wariyapola, Kolambagama Miyugunarama Rajamaha Viharaya is considered as one of the first temples built by King Devanampiyatissa (250-210 BC). It is said that the king-built temples at every gauwa (approximately 4 miles) and this is considered one of the very first built by him. The temple is today more popular for its “Sri Vishnu Devalaya” which is built in form of a “Tampita Viharaya”. The temple also owns an ancient buddha statue with Varada Mudra which is uncommon in Sri Lanka.
