Every person has a unique skin type, and British beauty brand, The Body Shop, wants you to wear yours loud and proud. Be it oily, dry, normal, or a combination of it all, here is how you can create a skincare routine that works best for your unique skin type.

Identifying your skin type

First, let us help you figure out your skin type. It’s as easy as spelling s-k-i-n. Just wash your face, curl up with a good book or an episode of your favourite Netflix show, and then check in back at your bathroom mirror in about an hour.

Oily Skin is the easiest to detect. If your skin has that tell-tale shiny appearance, sometimes accompanied by blackheads and/or enlarged pores around the nose, chin and forehead –i.e. your ‘T-zone’-, you know for certain you’ve got oily skin.

Dry skin will have the exact opposite appearance, but you’ll feel it before you see it. A dry, flaky texture, and the urge to slap on some cream or moisturiser, is a sure-fire sign that you’ve got dry skin.

Combination skin, like the name suggests, is a relationship where both dry and oily co-exist. More often than not, your T-zone is likely to be greasy and prone to breakouts, while the rest of your face is drier.

Normal skin is more resistant to the elements with just the right balance of oils, and is easier to create a skincare regime for when compared to the rest. This skin type is what we all aspire to, but this doesn’t necessarily mean we neglect its care.

The Cleanse-Tone-Moisturise skincare regime for your skin type

Dry skin

Here, The Body Shop calls in the saviours of dry skin: the Vitamin E skincare range.

Cleanse – For dry skin The Body Shop’s Vitamin E Gentle Facial Wash with its light, creamy feel, and soft, lathering action, is as relaxing as it sounds – but also mighty in function. A great-smelling facial wash that cleanses and purifies dry skin from the grime of the day, it can be used daily without fear of damaging your beautiful visage.

Tone – Though often neglected, toning is a crucial step in your daily skincare regime. It helps clean up any residual grime following your facial cleanse, while also setting the stage for your moisturiser to come in and do its job. When it comes to dry skin The Body Shop’s Vitamin E Hydrating Toner has a gentle formula enriched with vitamin E and wheat germ oil that is both hydrating and refreshing at the same time.

Moisture – The Body Shop’s Vitamin E Intense Moisture Cream means business. A firm favourite among dry/sensitive skin types, this product is infused with a clever combination of Vitamin E and Hyaluronic acid – both powerhouses of moisturisation. Subtly sweet-smelling, this fast-absorbing product helps restore and retain moisture for upto 72 hours, leaving your skin supple and radiant for the long-term.

Oily Skin

When it comes to oily skin, it’s The Body Shop’s tea tree range to the rescue!

Cleanse –As a facial cleanser, the Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wash is what you need to delicately help rid the skin of impurities and excess oil, without over-drying the skin.

Tone – Helping to balance your face’s excess oil, the Tea Tree Skin Clearing Mattifying Toner is a key step for all in the oily skincare routine. Enriched with Community Fair Trade tea tree oil and mattifying powders, this wonder-product helps to subdue excess oil, leaving your face feeling refreshed.

Mask – Oily skin requires no further moisturisation, but to target blemishes and remedy excess oil the Tea Tree Anti-Imperfection Night Mask is a hard-working formula that stays up all night say that you have clearer looking skin. Just smooth out over your face before bed for this refreshing and indulgent night mask to work its magic.

Combination skin

Combination skin is the most challenging to care for. To cater to this niche skin type, The Body Shop has formulated its Seaweed skincare range, filled with mineral-rich seaweed from Roaring Water Bay, Ireland.

Cleanse – For those battling with both oily T-zones and dry patches of skin, The Body Shop’s Seaweed Cleansing Gel Face Wash washes away both impurities and excess oil, for a shine-free look as well as a fresher and invigorating feel.

Tone – To rebalance and revive combination skin, the harmonising and alcohol-free Seaweed Oil Balancing Toner with algae and cucumber extract, will have you feeling refreshed and purified; ready for the next step of your skincare routine.

Moisturise – To bring the balance back to your skin, combination skin types stand to benefit greatly from the ultra-lightweight Seaweed Oil-Control Gel Cream, leaving it feeling fresher, hydrated and more mattified as well.

The Body Shop’s new vegan routines cover all hair needs

Hair has an attitude, an identity. It tells a powerful story about who you are. Which is why it’s so important to keep it in root-to-tip shape. Luckily The Body Shop’s new vegan haircare routines are here to help your hair look and feel as powerful as you, so you can keep telling your story, your way.

The Body Shop has two new and improved haircare routines for all hair needs. These new routines are pretty hair-mazing. It’s time to love your unique hair unapologetically.

POWER YOUR DO LIKE NEVER BEFORE

Why are The Body Shop’s new haircare routines so powerful? For a start they’re all made with Vegan Silk Protein, a 100% plant-based protein which cleverly replicates the chemical structure of natural silk produced by the common European garden spider. But The Body Shop is fully plant-based –ALL The Body Shop’s haircare is now registered by the Vegan Society, so, no spiders or silkworms were harmed, used or disturbed to obtain it. Plus, all haircare is now made with (at least!) 90% ingredients of natural origin.

The Body Shop’s new haircare routines are designed to improve the appearance of damaged hair, so they literally help repair the hair follicle from the inside out. A user trial discovered that 90% would recommend The Body Shop’s new haircare to a friend.

GET FRESH AND CLEAN LOCKS FOR LONGER.

The new Tea Tree haircare purifies & balances oily hair and scalps. It is made with organically-grown Community Fair Trade tea tree oil from Kenya and Vegan Silk Protein. This routine also helps eliminate build-up, leaving hair feeling purified and refreshed without stripping its natural moisture.

BRIGHTEN UP YOUR BARNET

The new Moringa haircare results in healthier-feeling and visibly shinier hair, helping to protect it from daily pollution. Made with Community Fair Trade moringa seed oil and extract from Rwanda and Vegan Silk Protein. This routine visibly restores dull hair’s radiance and shine. Expect softer, smoother, and healthier looking hair that smells fragrantly floral.

COMMUNITY FAIR TRADE RECYCLED PLASTIC

The Body Shop’s new haircare bottles and tubs (excluding lids) are made from 100% recycled plastic, including Community Fair Trade recycled plastic collected off the streets of Bengaluru, India. It’s no secret that plastic pollution has become a global crisis and the planet is drowning in it. It affects marine and ocean life, but it affects people too. In India, almost a third of waste is uncollected. This has given rise to 1.5 million unsung heroes known as ‘waste pickers’ who work tirelessly to clean up their streets. Waste pickers, however, are mostly made up of ‘dalits’, formally known as ‘untouchables’, the lowest social group in India’s caste system. This means that they are vulnerable to discrimination and poor working conditions. The Body Shop’s Community Fair Trade partnership with Plastics for Change not only helps tackle the existing plastic problem. It also helps support around 2,500 marginalised waste pickers in India with access to more sanitary working conditions and a fair price for the plastic waste they collect. The Body Shop wants to do more than fight pollution. They want to drive social change and help empower people too.

Whether you’ve always been a gym buff, or have only recently resorted to hitting that yoga mat while under lockdown, you know that working out takes a toll on your skin. While it’s healthy to sweat it out, the breakouts that tend to follow are never welcome.

Workout skincare regimes are often neglected, backed by the belief that a regular dose of exercise is great for skin health. While that is undoubtedly true, dermatologists have also long been standing by the importance of good skincare habits to combat the acne, irritation, and redness that accompanies an adrenaline rush.

So, be it a high-intensity cardio session, a series of kettlebell routines, or even just a brisk walk around the neighbourhood, here are a few pre-, during, and post-workout skincare tips to keep both your body and skin well-toned.

PRE-WORKOUT

  • Remove your makeup: Wearing makeup to the gym is a big no no. Breaking into a sweat opens up your pores, and the last thing you want is that stuff settling in and leaving your skin with no room to breathe. The Body Shop’s Camomile Fresh Micellar Cleansing Water with its refreshing formula, is a one-step make-up remover and cleanser that does the job both gently and effectively.
  • Wash your face: Simple, but necessary. Even if your face ‘feels’ clean, it’s always wise to take a few minutes for a thorough cleanse with a light, water-based face wash. The Body Shop’s Aloe Calming Foaming Wash is light and soothing, and preps your face for a good sweat out without fear of bringing in any impurities to your workout.
  • Protect yourself from the elements: If you’re tying up your trainers to head outdoors, don’t forget to slap on some sunscreen. The Body Shop’s fast-absorbing and lightweight Skin Defence Multi-Protection Lotion SPF 50+ PA++++ will not only keep your skin hydrated, but also help reduce exposure to harmful UVA and UVB rays.

DURING WORKOUT

  • Keep your hair off your face: Put your game face on and your hair tied up. This helps prevent oils (and any hair products you may have used that day) from clogging the pores on your forehead, and causing breakouts.
  • Don’t touch your face: Why? Because gym equipment is filled with bacteria and other users’ sweat, that’s why! Keep a towel handy for when you want to wipe down your face, and even better, a pack of antibacterial wipes to wipe down anything you’re about to get your hands on which may have been used before.
  • Hydrate!: This is as much a skincare tip, as it is one for overall good health. Make sure that you’ve got your bottle of H2O with you whenever you’re working out (another handy side kick would be The Body Shop’s Vitamin E Skin Cooling Gel Mist), and be sure to top it up the rest of the day to make up for lost fluids.

POST WORKOUT

  • (Again) Wash your face – We all love our post-workout glow, but as important as it is to clean your skin off any bacteria and sweat right after, it’s also as helpful to cool off skin to prevent the breaking of blood vessels, and to return skin temperature to a normal level quicker. The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wash has been a long-time favourite for its ability to help oust grime and reveal more mattified, clearer-looking skin.
  • Shower down – Oh, that feeling when the first rush of cool water hits your hot skin right after a gruelling workout. This is best accompanied with The Body Shop’s Pink Grapefruit Shower Gel, which not just cleanses and refreshes your skin, but will also have you feeling like you’ve stepped into a surreal luxurious escape.
  • Moisturise – Now that your body is well-hydrated, it’s time to lock-in all that moisture. Steer clear of thicker formulas post-workout though, and instead, stick to gel-like or lightweight moisturizers. The Body Shop’s British Rose Body Yogurt instantly melts into damp post-shower skin, helping to moisturise and lend your body the sweet smell of a freshly picked bouquet of roses.

The Body Shop’s range of carry-on products keeps dryness at bay

Since COVID-19 has called on us to make changes some to our routine, our skin is facing the effects of excessive, but necessary, hand washing, extra showers and wearing of face masks. While these measures are key steps in preventing the spread of the virus, effective skincare can help alleviate the dryness, itchiness, and that awful sensation of skin peeling on our hands.

Hand care

Lots of hand washing can strip your hands of their natural oils, resulting in skin drying and even causing rashes. So, while you’re ensuring the health and safety of your community, make sure to take care of your skin health as well.

While you may have already established a moisturizing routine before you head for work or right before bed, make it a point now to apply some moisturizer after every time you sanitize/wash your hands. Keep a travel-sized tube handy for convenience. The Body Shop has a collection of sweet-smelling hand creams to keep your sanitizer good company. Protect and soothe dry hands by choosing from the Honey Mania Hand Cream, Frosted Cranberry Hand Cream, and Almond Milk & Honey Hand Creams; all essentials for sensitive skin on the go.

Also, don’t slack on that lathering just because your skin looks better. Even if your hands don’t feel itchy or chapped, keep moisturizing them regularly. Early skin protection is always better than having to fix an existing break-out.

Body care

Just because you’re focusing on your hand care, don’t neglect your regular skincare regime for the rest of your body. In fact, with the current dry climate, it helps to combine moisturizers. Lightweight creams serve to add moisture to the skin’s outer layer, and to lock that moisture in, follow with a heavier moisturizer that prevents water loss. The Body Shop’s Strawberry Puree Body Lotion is a lightweight and easily absorbed body lotion that hydrates dry skin and leaves it feeling soft and smooth. The Wild-Argan Oil Body Butter for dry skin is far richer with its buttery texture, and allows all the moisture to stay in. For an all-in moisturiser to last the entire day, slap on some British Rose Body Yoghurt and off you go.

Face care

As life-saving as they are during the pandemic, face masks can have some deteriorating effects on the skin of your face. Aside from the obvious chafing in areas of direct contact with the mask, people can also develop itchiness and rashes. Additionally, damp conditions under the mask can lead to increased breakouts and other skin complications. Here are a few things to keep in mind while masking regularly.

Cleanse and moisturize your face before and after using a mask. It might be an idea to keep handy a face spritz in the car, or carry a toner with you in your handbag for your trips to the ladies’ room. The Body Shop’s Vitamin E Hydrating Toner is the perfect refresher to remove traces of cleanser, dirt and make-up without drying the skin, leaving it feeling supple and soft.

You can also try placing a transparent bandage between the mask-to-skin contact points to ease the formation of blisters.

While at home use a daily face wash and weekly face scrub specific to your current skin condition. While you may have had oily skin before the pandemic, your skin may now be drier (or vice versa). The ever-popular daily-use Tea Tree Facial Wash for blemished skin removes excess oil without over-drying skin, resulting in clearer-looking skin when used as part of a regular regime. Alternatively, the Seaweed Pore-Cleansing Facial Exfoliator for all skin types, when used on a weekly basis, helps to cleanse pores and rebalance oil on the face.

Lip Care

While the pressing need for lipstick and gloss has most certainly experienced a downturn, we still need to ensure that our lips stay crack-free. Fortunately lip balms often come in the handiest of sizes, easy pocketable for that sneaky touch-up when there’s no one within that 6-foot mark. The Body Shop’s delicious Born Lippy range of lip balms packs in that moisture, keeping those chapped lips at bay.

Foot care

After having spent months under lockdown with enough time to pamper our feet, getting back out into the world has us neglecting them again. The Body Shop’s Peppermint Cooling Foot Spray is a fab cubby carry-on for that quick spritz in between stops (or underneath the work desk) to refresh, revive, and keep moisturized your hot, tired feet. For a more serious intervention of forgotten feet, the Peppermint Intensive Foot Rescue overnight moisture-booster works on hard skin and dry heels.

Shop all pandemic skin savers and more from The Body Shop outlets in Colombo (flagship store on Bagatale Road, Colombo City Centre, and at Odel Alexandria Place) and Kandy (Kandy City Centre). Contact 0115765656 for delivery to Colombo & suburbs, and 0774476170 for Kandy & suburbs.

The natural properties of tea tree oil have been used in traditional medicine for centuries; a versatile oil used to help treat infections and promote healing, made from the crushed leaves of the tea tree plant, a species that is native to Australia.

Over decades, various researchers have conducted multiple studies, delving into the effectiveness of tea tree oil as a powerful remedy for acne and in fighting oily skin. Its natural purifying effects on blemished skin have made it a go-to ingredient for many.

Harnessing the nourishing and antiseptic properties of tea tree oil for a range of skincare solutions, Tea Tree Oil by global beauty brand, The Body Shop, is a formula that has been perfected over years, containing 15% Community Fair Trade tea tree oil. This means users can safely apply it directly onto skin without dilution, unlike the 100% undiluted or “neat” forms available elsewhere.

The lemon tea tree oil in the formula, known for its highly aromatic fragrance, contains purifying properties that have been proven to tackle blemishes and keep one’s skin looking clear. Meanwhile, the tamanu oil in the tree oil formula is well-known for its antibacterial properties, effectively soothing blemished skin.

By combining tea tree oil with a variety of other interesting ingredients, The Body Shop has experimented with its healing properties and created several unique skincare solutions, ranging from masks and scrubs to lotions, and facial washes to body washes.

Going a step beyond, The Body Shop has more recently combined the properties of tea tree oil with the healing properties of salicylic acid, hyaluronic acid, and aloe vera. Well-known for its effectiveness in reducing acne, exfoliating skin, and keeping pores clear, salicylic acid can be a powerful ingredient when combined with tea tree oil. Meanwhile, hyaluronic acid works to keep skin supple and hydrated, balancing moisture levels from within by binding to water molecules in the skin.

Perhaps one of the most widely used skincare remedies, in both new and age-old recipes, the gel-like components of the aloe plant have antimicrobial properties that help in flushing out microbes and dirt, unclogging pores and softening one’s skin, thus treating acne with an unmatched efficacy.

Bringing together the unique healing properties of these ingredients, The Body Shop’s new Tea Tree In-Control Hydrator works to provide users with an intense, 24-hour hydration.

Combining Community Fair Trade Tea Tree Oil from Kenya, Community Fair Trade organic aloe vera from Mexico, salicylic acid, and white willow bark, amongst other ingredients, the Tea Tree In-Control Hydrator has been created to be a light, non-greasy formula that can be applied seamlessly onto one’s skin, balancing its natural oil production.

With a global reach that comprises more than 3,000 stores in more than 60 countries, The Body Shop is constantly striving to push the boundaries of skincare and enrich its products, the lives of people, and our planet. Its range of Tea Tree Oil products can be purchased at The Body Shop flagship store on Bagatalle Road, Odel at Alexandra Place, Kandy City Centre, and Colombo City Centre.

Vitamin E and its many benefits often go ignored, overshadowed by the more popular and frequently discussed Vitamins D and C. It is about time however, that we start taking this E-ssential vitamin a lot more seriously.

Vitamin E and health

Vitamin E in essence, is a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning that your body is able to store it and use it as required. Its main role is to act as an antioxidant that hunts down and weakens loose electrons -or ‘free radicals.’

Longer cell life – Oxidation and accelerated aging takes place in your body when cells are exposed to free radicals which weaken and break down healthy cells, and as a result, shorten the life of your cells. Vitamin E as an antioxidant, may help reduce free radical damage and slow the aging process of your cells.

Better immune function – found in higher concentration in immune cells compared to other cells in blood, Vitamin E is one of the most effective nutrients known to modulate immune function. Vitamin E deficiency has proven to impair normal functions of the human immune system, which can be corrected by vitamin E repletion. Although deficiency is rare, vitamin E supplementation above current dietary recommendations has been shown to enhance the function of the immune system and reduce risk of infection, particularly in older individuals.

While many opt to add Vitamin E supplements to their daily intake, just adding more through healthy foods could help speed up your cell synthesis and make you feel healthier overall. Vitamin E-rich foods include vegetable oils, spinach, nuts and seeds, shrimp, and avocado.

Vitamin E and hair

Already established as an anti-oxidant, Vitamin E has also gained popularity for its ability to transform scalp health, stimulate hair growth, and smooth dry, frizzy hair.

Scalp rejuvenation: Vitamin E when used topically on the head provides conditioning to the scalp itself, increasing moisture to the skin and helping those with dry, flaky scalps to create a healthy scalp environment.

Enhances hair growth and hair strength: The antioxidant properties of Vitamin E oil can reduce cell damage and even increase blood supply to the scalp, encouraging hair growth as a result. It can also strengthen your existing hair follicles and prevent hair breakage and split ends.

Prevents hair loss: Another benefit of Vitamin E for hair can be the prevention of breaking down existing hair follicles. Its antioxidant properties can help reduce the amount of oxidative stress and free radicals that may cause the hair follicle cells to break down.

In order to incorporate this valuable ingredient into your haircare routine, opt for shampoos, oils and conditioners containing vitamin E.

Vitamin E and skin:

In addition to helping skin look its best, Vitamin E has a wide range of properties, from shielding skin against damaging environmental factors to soothing and moisturising irritated skin.

Protects against inflammation: While it is keeping those free radicals from damaging your cells, in doing so vitamin E can also decrease inflammation. That means there’s a decreased tendency for redness, and acne to develop.

Slows down skin ageing and wrinkles: Vitamin E can absorb harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight and pollution by taking care of those free radicals generated; keeping them from prematurely aging and damaging your skin.

Solves hyperpigmentation: Dark patches on your skin can be caused by too much of the pigment melanin. This is believed to be treatable through the use of topical vitamin E.

Soothes dry lips: Topical vitamin E can be used to relieve chapped, dry lips. Since vitamin E promotes cell turnover and regeneration, using it on dry lips brings new cells to the surface faster.

While introducing Vitamin E-rich foods into your diet is always a good idea, when it comes to skincare its always best to introduce some Vitamin E products into your beauty regime.

The Body Shop’s much-loved Vitamin E collection has been a favourite with skincare experts for a reason, and the iconic beauty brand’s range of moisturisers is perfect to combat the dry climate and give your skin that fitness kick. All products in the line are now enriched with hyaluronic acid and raspberry extract. Rich in antioxidants, the newly reformulated Vitamin E moisturisers take hydration to new heights.

The ever-popular and super-light and refreshing Vitamin E Gel Moisture Cream is filled with highly effective all-natural ingredients, and packed with antioxidants to fight against the effects of time, sun-damage, and stress. While this works best for combination skin types, the Vitamin E Moisture Cream isn’t fussy. Just slap some on before you head out for the day, to have your skin feeling noticeably healthier and refreshed.

For extremely dry skin however, the Vitamin E Intense Moisture Cream wholly refreshes, moisturizes, and protects skin without leaving you feeling greasy as a result.

For a deeper hydration free from the grime and dust of the day, just lather on the Vitamin E Nourishing Night Cream right before you turn out the lights for the night. Then wake up to softer, healthier, and fruity-smelling skin!

The Body Shop has also introduced a delicious new product to the Vitamin E family. The new Vitamin E Skin Cooling Gel Mist comes in a conveniently-sized 60ml spray bottle, and is the perfect travel buddy to have handy when you just need a refreshing spritz when on the go.

Shop The Body Shop’s hydrating Vitamin E range -and more- from The Body Shop flagship store on Bagatale Road, Odel in Alexandra Place, the Kandy City Centre, and the Colombo City Centre.
