Twin Gold Awards for INSEE Puttalam Plant and INSEE Ecocycle at Presidential Environment Awards 2019

At the Presidential Environment Awards 2019 held recently at the Nelum Pokuna Theater under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena, the Puttalam Plant of INSEE Cement was conferred the prestigious Gold Award under the category of Chemical Industries Plants and INSEE Ecocycle won Gold under the category of Solid Waste Recovery / Recycling / Disposal or Processing Plants in recognition of contributions to environmental conservation.

Nandana Ekanayake, Chairman /CEO of Siam City Cement (Lanka) Limited, Sri Lanka’s foremost manufacturer of Cement received the award for INSEE Puttalam Cement Plant and Sanjeewa Chulakumara, Director INSEE Ecocycle Lanka received the award for INSEE Ecocycle Lanka presented by the President.

The Presidential Environment Awards Programme is organized by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) to reward individuals and industries that have made a significant contribution to the field of environmental conservation and protection.

At last year’s awards presentation, a Bronze award was presented in recognition of INSEE Puttalam Cement Plant’s contribution to the green production process and a Silver award was presented in recognition of INSEE Ecocyle, a fully-owned subsidiary company of Siam City Cement (Lanka) Limited engaged in industrial waste management.   Inspired by the accomplishment, the Puttalam Plant’s Environment team aimed higher and clinched the Gold award for 2019.  The team leader for Puttalam Plant was Environment & CSR Manager Rohan Lakmal and for INSEE Ecocycle, Environment, Health & Safety and Stakeholder Relations Manager Kirama Chandrakumara who were appreciative of the tremendous support extended by the Puttalam Cement Plant’s management team, and Ecocycle Pre-processing facility management team and those in the head office that enabled INSEE Cement to receive the Gold awards this year.

Rohan and Kirama took pride in listing the stringent assessment criteria that made winning the Gold awards an outstanding achievement for the Company.  The Puttalam Plant is the only entity in Sri Lanka that conducts Environment Monitoring & Reporting (EMR) and GRI Reporting while maintaining 100% compliance in the requirements of the Environment Protection License.  It is also ISO 14001:2015 certified.

INSEE Ecocycle pre-processing and co-processing facilities satisfy all regulatory technical standards and is globally adopted for the management of waste and is considered a better option than landfilling or incineration as it offers a complete solution with zero harmful emission to the environment. Our facility has obtained all required licenses (Environmental Protection License and Scheduled Waste Management License) and certifications such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 17025 and OHSAS 18001.”

The plant’s CSR activities include creating livelihoods for residents in the district, maintaining clean water and sanitation, engaging in environment conservation, community development and encouraging education while ensuring the safety of its employees and stakeholders. The plant is also dedicated to maintaining a pleasing visual appearance, strict waste management policy while engaging in environment innovation that results in sustainable development and protecting the environment responsibly.
