Monday, April 29th, 2024, Colombo, Sri Lanka: The Gratiaen Trust, in partnership with John Keells Foundation and with the support of British Council as its event partner, announced the shortlist for the 31st Gratiaen Prize, on April 29, 2024, at the British Council Library in Colombo. This prestigious annual award founded by Michael Ondaatje celebrates exceptional English creative writing by Sri Lankan authors. This year, of the eight longlisted writers, five have been short-listed for the next stage of the competition, these include in alphabetical order: A Passing Return by Pasan Jayasinghe (Travelogue – Unpublished); Father Cabraal’s Recipe for Love Cake by Ramya Jirasinghe (Novel – Unpublished); Gnanam by Selvi Sachithanandam (Biography – Published); Students and Rebels by Vihanga Perera (Novel – Published) and When Ghosts Die by Lal Medawattegedara (Novel – Unpublished).

Reflecting on the Gratiaen Prize’s longstanding tradition of representing three perspectives within the judging process, the jury panel this year comprises a creative writer, an academic and an informed general reader. The 31st Gratiaen Prize jury panel comprises distinguished international and local literary figures. It is chaired by Dr Anthony Joseph F.R.S.L., a T.S Elliot award-winning poet, novelist, academic, and musician. Joining him are Dr. Ruvani Ranasinha, a professor specialising in postcolonial literature at King’s College London; and Angeline Ondaatjie, a renowned hotelier and academic with a background in chemical engineering and literature.

Speaking of his experience as Chair of the jury, Dr Anthony Joseph, said, “Judging the Gratiaen Prize has given me an insight into the complexities of the Sri Lankan history and culture. Each book has offered something of the island. There is a richness of detail throughout the entries, which is vivid and sensuous, with elegant, transportive descriptions of the island and its landscape. It has also been great to see how as writers, we are all, regardless to our geographies, trying to say something about what it means to be human. The stories and poems here are grappling with issues and concerns which are universal but are doing this in a distinctively Sri Lankan way. It’s been an honour to be part of this process.”

Representative of John Keells Foundation, the primary sponsor to the Trust, Carmeline Jayasuriya, Head of CSR and Senior Assistant Vice President, John Keells Holdings PLC, speaking at the event said, “John Keells Foundation is delighted to partner with the Gratiaen Trust for the fifth successive year in its commitment to support an increasingly vibrant literary culture in Sri Lanka. As the CSR entity of the John Keells Group, one of our six pillars is Arts & Culture aimed at safeguarding and fostering the cultural heritage of Sri Lanka whilst promoting social cohesion and well-being and boosting creative economies through strategic initiatives and collaborations. As the process for the prestigious Gratiaen Prize progresses, we look forward to celebrating the achievements of Sri Lankan writers and continuing our collaborative efforts with the Gratiaen Trust to nurture creativity and innovation.”

Orlando Edwards, Country Director – British Council Sri Lanka,  added, “I am immensely proud of the British Council’s enduring partnership with the Gratiaen Trust. Last year, we worked together to bring award-winning UK authors Monique Roffey and Sita Brahmachari to Sri Lanka. They delivered creative writing workshops for teachers and students of all ages in Colombo, Kandy and Galle. And this year we are delighted that the UK poet Dr Anthony Joseph will chair the judges for the 2023 Gratiaen Prize. Our work with the Gratiaen Trust is highly regarded in the UK, where the growing importance of the Sri Lankan literary scene on the global stage is recognised. It’s worth noting too, the huge potential of the Sri Lankan Book Publishing industry. The market size of the Book Publishing industry in the UK is estimated to be £6.9bn in 2024. Here in Sri Lanka, it’s the work of actors like the Gratiaen Trust which are helping to grow the Sri Lankan creative economy. Our partnership with the Trust is a leading example of the many and varied innovative projects that we deliver around the world promoting literature partnerships. We hope that this year’s Gratiaen Prize will continue to inspire more Sri Lankans to write and to read – our British Council Libraries and digital libraries are open to all, and we have lots of exciting new stock to tempt new members!

The Gratiaen Prize in 2024 is generously supported by John Keells Foundation – the CSR entity of the John Keells Group – the primary sponsor of the Gratiaen Trust since October 2019 under its vision of Empowering the Nation for Tomorrow. The British Council will sponsor the visit of Dr Anthony Joseph, contributing significantly to the enrichment of the event with international expertise. Dr. Gayashika Fernando serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering Department in the Faculty of Engineering in SLIIT. As the first-ever PhD to be produced by SLIIT’s Faculty of Engineering, she exemplifies determination, resilience, and a fervent commitment to advancing scientific knowledge through her remarkable journey.

Dr. Fernando obtained her B.Sc. (Hons), in Production Engineering from the University of Peradeniya, and MEng in Manufacturing System Engineering from the University of Moratuwa. Prior Joining to SLIIT she served in the Industry for about 8 years.

Through her research on ‘Climate Policy Analysis for Climate Mitigation and Carbon Neutrality: A Case Study of Sri Lanka’, Dr. Fernando developed a model for analyzing the impact of different energy policies. These models will be useful for the country in analyzing national-level policies such as renewable energy targets, nationally determined contributions and net zero emissions. It will also provide different implications on the costs involved in implementing such policies. Her work, was published in a prestigious Q1 journal and has accomplished international recognition and strengthened SLIIT’s reputation as a hub of academic excellence.

Dr. Fernando shares insights into her research, the challenges she faced as a woman in engineering, her motivations for pursuing this path, and the invaluable advice she offers to those considering a career in this dynamic field.

Q: Can you elaborate on the research and academic accomplishments?

A: I pursued my PhD in Mechanical Engineering at SLIIT, focusing on ‘Climate Policy Analysis for Climate Mitigation and Carbon Neutrality’ using energy-economic-environmental modeling. The research aimed at developing a model to analyze different climate and energy policies. It addressed the country’s need to have a systematic method for developing policy and analyzing them before implementation. These studies will be very useful for the country in developing future national policies of the country. It could provide valuable insights in meeting various obligations under agreements like the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

My Primary Supervisor was Prof Migara Liyanage. Other Co-Supervisors were Prof R A Attalage, & Prof S. Karunarathne. Their inputs were invaluable and a great source of support and motivation towards the success of my PhD. Conducting high-quality research in a developing country like Sri Lanka with limited resources and data availability was particularly difficult. However, with the support of experienced supervisors, collaborations with international experts, and SLIIT’s research facilities, I was able to successfully overcome these obstacles and achieve my goals. I was also fortunate to receive support from the National Institute of Environmental Studies, Japan. Such collaborations immensely help to produce quality research.

The research resulted in publications in top-ranked Q1 journals, including the prestigious ‘Sustainable Production and Consumption’ journal, which is in the top 10% globally. I am extremely proud to be the  first PhD holder from the Faculty of Engineering at SLIIT and my contribution in fostering an engineering postgraduate culture at SLIIT engineering has the potential to ignite a broader research culture, both within the institution and across our country.

Q: Why did you choose to pursue a career in engineering, and what motivated you to complete the PhD at SLIIT?

A: After about eight years of service in the corporate sector, I felt a strong desire to shape future generations and make a more impactful contribution by adding my corporate sector experiences to engineering education. That’s why I decided to transition to academia and join SLIIT. Recognizing the importance of continuously upgrading my knowledge, I decided to pursue a PhD.

I chose to pursue my PhD at SLIIT due to personal reasons that prevented me from leaving the country. The institution’s supportive research environment, including expert guidance,  research grants, exceptional library resources, and study leave provisions was extremely helpful and supportive towards completing my PhD.

Q: What challenges did you face as a woman pursuing a career in engineering?

A: Even though engineering is a male-dominated field, there are ample opportunities and diverse disciplines for females to fit in. Through resilience and dedication, I faced challenges and seized every chance to improve. I took gradual but lasting steps to reach my targets. With proper time management practices and work-life balance through good physical and mental health practices, women can confront challenges in this field as in every other field.

Q: Why do you believe participation of women in Engineering  is crucial?

A: Engineering is using science and mathematics to design products and services that improve people’s lives. The participation of women in Engineering is crucial as they bring diverse perspectives and experiences that shape innovative solutions.  Their unique feminine traits, such as endurance, multitasking prowess, outstanding team coordination abilities, effective communication skills, and interpersonal skills, bolster teams and bring considerable value to the field of engineering. With their unique viewpoints, women in this field contribute directly to economic growth while also addressing social and environmental well-being.

Moreover, their involvement in Engineering drives societal progress, as evident in countries with high female representation in engineering and science-related areas. By fostering an inclusive environment, Engineering disciplines can harness the immense potential of women’s contributions.

Q: What advice would you give to women considering a career in engineering, and why would SLIIT be an ideal choice?

A: I truly believe that Women can contribute diverse perspectives and experiences to engineering solutions, which is crucial for economic growth and societal well-being. First and foremost, believe in yourself and the unique perspectives you bring to engineering. Seek out supportive mentors to guide you in your career journey. Continuously look for opportunities to enhance your lifelong learning experiences and personal growth.

I wholly recommend SLIIT as an ideal choice for pursuing engineering studies due to several reasons. Especially its flexible approach, self-funded research grants, fee waivers for employees, excellent facilities, and a motivated staff that encourages research. SLIIT’s collaborations with foreign universities and other international organizations provide valuable support and exposure. I am grateful to the support received from my supervisors and peers in achieving this milestone.

Beyond her academic achievements, Dr. Fernando’s accomplishments serve as an inspiration for women aspiring to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields. Overcoming challenges posed by limited resources and data availability, she persevered with the support of experienced supervisors and collaborations with international experts.

In the first quarter of 2024, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) achieved a recorded increase in container volumes, with numbers rising from 441,032 TEUs to 652, 766 TEUs, marking a notable 48% increase compared to the previous year. This increase can be attributed to various factors, including the Red Sea crisis and its wider implications. SLPA’s transshipment volume for the initial three months of this year reached 582,403 TEUs, reflecting a growth of 49.81% compared to the same period last year. This increase contributed to the overall rise in the Port of Colombo’s (POC) total transshipment volume, which reached 1,729,314 TEUs for the first three months of this year, representing a 24.20% growth compared to the same period in 2023.

Mr. Keith D. Bernard, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), emphasized that the port is poised to become a key transshipment serving the Middle East, as many shipping lines are rerouting vessels to avoid prevailing risks in the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.

“SLPA staff and workers have handled this situation diligently and efficiently, in the face of challenges,” he added.

SLPA and the Port of Colombo (POC) have effectively managed the situation which has resulted in a significant increase in throughput. The Port of Colombo (POC) experienced a substantial surge in volumes, reaching 2,002,077 TEUs, a notable increase of 24%. This demonstrates the Port of Colombo’s ability to attract more volumes and establish position as a leading shipping hub in the region.

Furthermore, the completion of the East Container Terminal (ECT) Stage II and the acquisition of new ship-to-shore cranes will further enhance POC’s position as a leading shipping hub in the region. The new cranes will enable the port to handle ultra-large GMX 24 ships, allowing it to accommodate higher volumes in the future.

Additionally, ongoing infrastructure developments by SLPA will further strengthen the Port of Colombo’s competitiveness in attracting more volume and enhancing its capabilities in handling larger vessels.
