The Sri Lanka Association of Software and Service Companies (SLASSCOM) has been playing a significant role in nurturing talent across the country to foster the growth of the IT/BPM industry in Sri Lanka. A notable example of their commitment to this cause was seen in the recently held Eastern IT/BPM Career Fair 2023, where they facilitated collaborations between universities and industry professionals, creating an environment that promoted knowledge exchange and networking. Through initiatives like the Eastern IT/BPM Career Fair, SLASSCOM actively contributes to the development of a highly capable workforce, fuelling the growth and competitiveness of the industry in Sri Lanka.

The first half of the event showcased a series of informative sessions designed to equip students with essential skills and knowledge needed for a successful transition from academia to industry. These sessions covered a wide range of topics, including crafting an impressive CV, mastering interview techniques, breaking barriers to foster positive thinking, exploring careers in the IT industry, and promoting women in IT and entrepreneurship. The sessions were delivered by renowned experts in the field and Prof. (Dr.) A. Rameez, Vice Chancellor of the Southeastern University, Prof. V. Kanagasingam, Vice Chancellor of the Eastern University, and Mr. Ashique Ali, Chairman of SLASSCOM too addressed the gatherings.

The second half of the day had a diverse line-up of reputed software companies eager to connect with talented individuals. Participating companies included SimCentric, hSenid Business Solutions, ADL (Axiata Digital Labs), HCL Tech, Axcenze and Topjobs.lk. This opportunity allowed students to interact directly with industry professionals, learn about the latest tools and technologies being utilized, enabling them to align their skills with industry requirements.

The career fair witnessed an impressive turnout, with approximately 2000 students attending the event across both locations. Several students received job offers, while others secured internship opportunities and submitted their resumes for consideration. For many attendees, this was their first experience facing an interview, providing invaluable practical knowledge and boosting their confidence.

Ashique Ali, Chairman of SLASSCOM stated,’ the long-term vision represented by this event focuses on establishing a sustainable talent pipeline for the IT/BPM sector in Sri Lanka. Today digital and IT literacy proficiency are no longer confined to specific areas or urban centres. By ensuring that individuals from diverse backgrounds and regions have access to technology and digital education, we foster an environment that promotes innovation, entrepreneurship, and competitiveness. ‘

Haridhu Abeygoonaratne, Director of SLASSCOM added ‘through a comprehensive approach that includes initiatives, partnerships, advocacy efforts, and market insights SLASSCOM will work to ensure that Sri Lanka remains a preferred destination for IT/BPM services, attracting investment, creating employment opportunities, and driving sustainable economic growth.’

Jehan Perera General Council member further explained ‘‘SLASSCOM will continue place emphasis on skill development and upskilling of our youth where we will work closely with educational institutions to align curricula with industry needs, promote industry-academia partnerships, and offer training programs to bridge the skills gap. We extend our gratitude to all the universities, industry professionals, and participants who contributed to the success of the Eastern IT/BPM Career Fair.’

SLASSCOM overall played a vital role in organizing the Eastern IT/BPM Career Fair 2023, where through their network, expertise, and resources, they contributed towards paving the way to create a skilled workforce that will meet industry demands and enhance Sri Lanka’s competitiveness in the global IT/BPM landscape.
