Inspiring education for over 60 years, Atlas has been a cherished foundation in turning students’ dreams into vibrant realities by infusing joy into their learning experiences. Atlas has gone beyond its role as a leading stationery provider in Sri Lanka, offering a holistic learning experience to schoolchildren.

Over the years, Atlas has tirelessly worked towards creating a skillfull generation, extending its social mission through a focus on cultivating a quality-rich learning environment for schoolchildren and addressing the challenges among children, parents, and educators that hinder children’s full potential. Atlas guides them in ensuring they have the means to pursue their dreams by providing equitable access to education, enhancing its quality, and safeguarding their mental well-being. Overall, Atlas converts stressful studying into a joyful learning experience.

In acknowledging Atlas’ longstanding commitment towards fostering education, Asitha Samaraweera, Managing Director of Atlas, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “In Sri Lanka, despite the provision of free education, around 25,000 students face annual dropout challenges due to financial constraints, posing difficulties for families in covering school-related expenses like uniforms and textbooks. In recognising this, we consider it both a responsibility and a duty for all of us to ensure that every child has the facilities to seize such opportunities, and Atlas Sipsavi, Atlas Gurugaru, Light a Future, and Atlas Learn aim to create better learning opportunities for all.”

To ensure equitable access for education, Atlas introduced the Atlas Sipsavi initiative, advocating for “no child left behind”, primarily offering financial aid to 250 students for a period of up to five years, with the goal of instilling hope in each child, regardless of their individual challenges. Additionally, the initiative provides material donations to children and improves school infrastructure. Furthermore, through the Light a Future project, Atlas successfully secured the educational rights of over 50,000 children.

Education extends beyond schoolchildren, with a significant share of responsibility shouldered by teachers and parents dedicated to shaping a child’s future. In recognising this Atlas has adopted two approaches to uphold the standard of education. One, aimed at children, is known as Atlas Learn, while the other, intended for teachers, is called Atlas GuruGaru. Atlas Learn primarily concentrates on both curriculum-based education and non-curriculum-based programs such as STEM education, supplemented by engaging tools like 2D cartoon animation to enhance educational quality whereas Atlas GuruGaru is designed to enhance teachers’ skills and train them in incorporating activity-based learning into traditional classroom settings.

Atlas is dedicated to ensuring that every student, regardless of their background, has access to high-quality education, recognising it as a fundamental right. This commitment includes breaking down barriers that hinder learning opportunities. By implementing engaging methods such as activity-based learning, supporting STEM initiatives, and investing in comprehensive teacher training programs, Atlas aims not only to enhance the quality of education but also to foster positive mindsets and create an environment conducive to learning, thereby ensuring a more enjoyable learning journey for students. Through these compassionate efforts, Atlas is sowing the seeds for a brighter future, where every child can aspire, learn, and unlock their full potential.

Sets itself the ambitious mission of raising USD 1.5 million in 90 days

to secure the futures of 100,000 children in need

Colombo, September 14, 2022: In Sri Lanka today, many families are struggling to provide the basic needs of their children and committing their limited resources for educational expenses is becoming increasingly difficult. According to a recent needs assessment by Save the Children, 50% of Sri Lankan families are currently struggling to support their children’s education and some children are already dropping out of school.

Statistics and insights from around the world show that dropping out of school not only affects the child’s socio-economic development, but when compounded, can also lead to the deceleration of economic progress and stunted social development of communities and countries.

Sarvodaya, Sri Lanka’s largest Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) with a broadly entrenched community-based development network, has identified one of the immediate obstacles faced by parents from vulnerable communities regarding their children’s continued education – the difficulty in securing essential school supplies.

To address this immediate need and mitigate the long-term negative impact on Sri Lanka’s future, Sarvodaya is launching the ‘Light a Future’ initiative, in partnership with Atlas, Sri Lanka’s leading education brand. The initiative will provide the necessary learning tools to 100,000 children who are most in danger of dropping out of school, giving them the gift of education in the hope of securing theirs and the country’s future.

In its mission to impact the lives of these 100,000 children in need, the Light a Future initiative has set itself the bold target of raising USD 1.5 million in the next 90 days to ensure all 100,000 children receive their essential learning tools packs in time for the 2023 school year. The support of influential corporates and individuals will be critical in reaching and mobilising charitable global communities and Sri Lankans living abroad to secure the necessary funds and create the desired impact.

As the main collaborative partner, Atlas is contributing the necessary funds for 2,500 children and will also be providing subsidised products for the Light a Future initiative. The company has also set up a dedicated team of volunteer Atlas staff who will devote 10,000+ of their work hours for the duration of the project. Together with this dedicated team, the company is funding the setting up of the initiative infrastructure and will be working to reach 3+ million global citizens including global Sri Lankans to ensure the success of the initiative.

Globally renowned Ernst & Young (EY) is onboard the project as the auditing partner and will be auditing the end-to-end process of the initiative to ensure accountability and transparency. Donors will also have the ability to view the status of their contribution via the Light a Future website, which will carry live updates on the progress of their contribution.

With the aim of ensuring the most vulnerable children benefit from the Light a Future initiative, Sarvodaya will select beneficiaries based on specific criteria including families under the poverty line and vulnerable due to disturbed livelihoods, female-led families, persons with disabilities, Samurdhi recipients, daily wage earners, families of affected SMEs and entrepreneurs and children of those institutionalised or in care homes.

All donations will be channelled to Sarvodaya through a secure payment gateway set up specifically for the initiative, and Sarvodaya will procure the learning tools packs in batches of 1,000 as and when donations are collected. These packs are customised for the requirements of the three main age groups of pre-school, primary and secondary, and includes the necessary stationery items for a school year such as books, pencils, pens, colour pencils, pastels, sharpeners, erasers, rulers, glue, clay, scissors, water bottle, lunch box, and a box of mathematical instruments for those in higher grades.

The Light a Future initiative calls on Sri Lankan corporates and individuals to join the cause – not only as donors and benefactors but as partners. The project seeks collaborators willing to connect the initiative to global Sri Lankan communities, associates who can amplify the message to other organisations, and support to amplify the cause among international donor audiences and networks.

21st March 2022: Helping students gain a strong foundation during their primary schooling, ChildFund Sri Lanka (CFSL) adapted a concept by International Literacy Association (ILA). The concept of ‘Active Teaching and Learning Approaches in Schools’ (ATLAS) for primary school children were developed and tested in different contexts. The proven concept was further funded by ChildFund Sri Lanka to be tested in central province through T-Field Child development Federation in collaboration with Education Authorities of Central province in the selected schools. The program which began five years ago has to-date benefited 1,520 schools and 10,109 teachers.

Prior to the program launch, research conducted by authorities showed lower educational competencies, impacting students’ interest in school.

To overcomes these challenges, ChildFund conducted a joint-pilot project with T-Field, a non-profit organization working in Central Province, for the development of marginalized tea estate workers’ communities. A model by ILA, an international organization dedicated to promoting high levels of literacy, was adapted. ILA was also engaged in all stages from the initial assessment to curricular development and training of teachers to ensure programme standards were met.

In the pilot intervention, findings revealed that most lessons conducted were traditional, lecture-type sessions, resulting in low interest and less engagement in studies among children. As Sri Lanka’s policy direction moves towards quality education that is student friendly and contributing to a knowledge economy, a reform of the education is essential to provide more child-friendly learning environments where children acquire a range of competencies.

To improve the quality of education, the ATLAS model, pioneered by ILA, funded by ChildFund New Zealand was implemented together with Ministry of Education, to support facilitating classroom activity sessions enhancing analytical, numeracy and literacy skills, confidence, resilience and leadership building.

The success of the pilot project proven through the positive scholarship examination results paved the way for the provincial authorities to adopt the ATLAS model as a teaching delivery method at primary schools in the Central Province.

Thereafter, a customized ATLAS module was developed for the Central Province. ILA and National Institute of Education provided technical assistance to adapt the model with the Provincial Education department to ensure the approach was adopted by all the primary schools in the Central province. The pilot project was launched among 27 schools and 135 teachers in Nuwara Eliya and 12 schools and 60 teachers in Matale.

“By adopting the ATLAS teaching and learning methods, we were able to improve the grade 5 Scholarship exam results in Nuwara Eliya education zone. Compared to 2019, there was 15% improvement in scholarship exam results in 2020, and we believe that adopting the ATLAS method has greatly contributed towards this achievement. We are very pleased that we were able to introduce an effective teaching and learning approach such as ATLAS to central province with the technical and financial support of ChildFund and T-Field Child Development Federation greatly”, stated M.G.A Piyadasa, Provincial Director, Department of Education, Central Province. ATLAS model aligns with policies and the strategic direction of the Government of Sri Lanka and Provincial Education Authorities.

The official event to signify the official adaptation of the ATLAS module by the Department of Education, Central Province was held end last year.

ChildFund Sri Lanka’s  Senior Program Manager, Thilakaratne Karunaratne said, “ChildFund Sri Lanka has over the years focused on education program efforts by expanding and improving school infrastructure, facilitating access to school, and supporting capacity building in communities. Supporting T-Field in implementing the ATLAS approach to Central Provincial schools, we were able to provide teachers the opportunity to participate in teacher training sessions and to receive classroom coaching in an ongoing effort to implement best classroom practices. We are pleased to note that the ATLAS approach has now been adopted by the Central Province while the accompanying strategies and approaches will be useful in improving the quality of primary education throughout Sri Lanka.”

ChildFund Sri Lanka understands that intervention which promote successful early learning and skills acquisition help children grow and develop as useful and productive citizens in their communities  are also linked to a country’s economic growth. The successful adoption of the ATLAS module among school children demonstrates how implementing strong educational platforms can contribute to these outcomes.
