The Commercial Bank of Ceylon won three Golds and a Bronze at CA Sri Lanka’s ‘TAGS’ Awards 2023 for the Bank’s 2022 Annual Report, excelling in key aspects recognised by the awards programme which is dedicated to Transparency, Accountability, Governance, and Sustainability – TAGS.

The Bank was adjudged the best across all sectors for ‘Corporate Governance Disclosure’ and for Digitally Transformative Reporting’ taking two Golds in the main category awards, and won the Gold for the best annual report in the Banking sector, in addition to taking the Bronze for ‘Overall Excellence in Corporate Reporting.”

Commercial Bank was the only entity to win three Gold awards at this year’s CA Sri Lanka TAGS Awards.

“We are absolutely delighted to win these prestigious awards, which are a fitting reward for the tremendous effort made by our Annual Report team to meet the highest local and global standards in financial reporting,” Commercial Bank Managing Director/CEO Mr Sanath Manatunge commented. “The TAGS awards are particularly important because of their focus on four of the most important pillars of disclosure. Transparency, Accountability, Governance, and Sustainability are embedded in the core values of the Bank and Commercial Bank places extra emphasis on these areas when producing its Annual Report.”

CA Sri Lanka’s Annual Report Awards Competition, which commands a prestigious legacy of more than 57 years, was reconceptualised and rebranded as TAGS Awards in 2022. The 2023 edition saw leading diversified conglomerates, sector-leading corporates, multinationals, SMEs and non-profit organisations being recognised for their commitment to producing outstanding annual corporate reports that go beyond meeting regulatory requirements and also contribute to the broader goals of fostering trust, ethical conduct and environmental stewardship at the 2023 TAGS awards.

Titled ‘In Context, Weathering a perfect storm’ the Commercial Bank’s 2022 annual report is the Bank’s 54th annual report and presents comprehensive information on all aspects of performance and governance in the backdrop of a series of events of great adversity, which the Bank said had combined to unleash a perfect storm in Sri Lanka. The report elaborates on how the Bank had kept faith in its proven prudence of strategy and adherence to a progressive drive towards enhancements in technology, customer-centric decision making and operational efficiencies to take the Bank forward during a challenging year.

Commercial Bank’s annual reports have consistently been recognised with local and regional awards for many years. The Bank has been awarded the Cyril Gardiner Memorial Trophy presented by CA Sri Lanka for Overall Excellence in Financial Reporting 10 times and has also won the Edmund J. Cooray Memorial Trophy for the Best Annual Report among Banking Institutions presented by CA Sri Lanka on 17 occasions. Commercial Bank’s Annual Report for 2022 also won five awards at the 2023 MerComm ARC Awards, the world’s largest annual report competition.

Sri Lanka’s first 100% carbon neutral bank and the first Sri Lankan bank to be listed among the Top 1000 Banks of the World, Commercial Bank operates a network of 271 branches and 964 automated machines in Sri Lanka, is the largest lender to Sri Lanka’s SME sector and a leader in digital innovation in the country’s Banking sector. Embracing its role as a world-class professional body, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka) continued to expand its global footprint by establishing a new chapter in the United Kingdom.

 The CA Sri Lanka United Kingdom Chapter was formally unveiled at a special event in Greater London, in the presence of a large number of CA Sri Lanka qualified Chartered Accountants. The formal launching ceremony was graced by Mr. Sanjaya Bandara, President of CA Sri Lanka.

 CA Sri Lanka enjoys a presence of over 150 members in the UK, who are making significant contributions to diverse industries across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

 Designed to be a supportive hub for CA members residing in the United Kingdom, the CA Chapter is poised to elevate their expertise, foster a vibrant platform for sharing invaluable experiences, and promote continuous professional development (CPD). With a key focus on enhancing technical skills, the chapter aims to ensure CA Sri Lanka’s Chartered Accountants meet the mandatory CPD requirements set by CA Sri Lanka, aligning seamlessly with international regulations.

 During his address, Mr. Bandara underscored CA Sri Lanka’s strategic global expansion, consciously targeting regions with a substantial concentration of members. “I am optimistic that the establishment of a new CA Sri Lanka Chapter in the United Kingdom will signify the beginning of a mutually enriching relationship, not only within our profession but also as a pivotal link in strengthening the bonds between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom,” he said.

 During his visit to the UK, Mr. Bandara also held meetings with Mr. Malcolm Bacchus, Deputy President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), and Ms. Ruth Hidalgo of Chartered Accountants Worldwide.

In a remarkable demonstration of growth, and community engagement, the Australia Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka) embarked on a journey of expansion and transformation in 2023, united by the inspiring theme of “Broadening the Horizons.” The CA Sri Lanka Australia Chapter has not only achieved impressive milestones during the year, but it has also left an indelible impact on communities in both Sri Lanka and Australia since its establishment in 2020.

The chapter’s most recent remarkable initiative was the launch of the CA Sri Lanka – Australia Scholarship Fund in October this year. This visionary endeavour provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for aspiring Chartered Accountants of CA Sri Lanka to elevate their future careers to new heights. The initiative also stands as a powerful testament to the chapter’s unwavering commitment to nurturing the leaders of tomorrow while making a substantial impact on the evolution of the accounting profession, both within Sri Lanka and on the global stage.

A sponsorship cheque of LKR 1,275,000/- was presented to Mr. Sanjaya Bandara, President of CA Sri Lanka, by Mr. Anuruddha Dias, President of CA Sri Lanka – Australia Chapter, in the presence of the Council and the Scholarship Committee of CA Sri Lanka.  This initial investment is expected to provide crucial support to Corporate and Strategic level CA students, assisting them in realising their professional dreams.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Sanjaya Bandara stated, “Within a short period of time, the CA Sri Lanka Australia Chapter has emerged as a beacon of positive change, expanding its horizons and playing a vital role in uplifting communities, especially in Sri Lanka at this crucial juncture. With unwavering dedication to innovation, education, and active community engagement, the Chapter not only impacts the accounting profession positively, but it also helps fulfil the aspirations of future Chartered Accountants.”

In September, the chapter also announced the launch of its very first Members Mentoring Programme. This groundbreaking initiative is designed to empower members, providing a platform for experienced professionals to guide and mentor the next generation of accountants while emphasising the spirit of mentorship and knowledge sharing. Earlier in the year the Chapter launched “New Migrant Starter Pack” to guide newly migrated CA members in settling in Australia.

Anuruddha Dias expressed his gratitude, saying, “We are very grateful that our Chapter has been able to play a proactive role throughout the year, significantly impacting the community and the accounting profession. As we look to the future, the Chapter is poised to ascend to new heights, carrying the flag of both Sri Lanka and CA Sri Lanka high in the land down under so that our members can continue to remain valued partners in the business landscape, and we can continue to play a critical role in helping our country during its time of need.”

Throughout the year, the chapter organised a variety of events, including programmes aimed at upskilling and networking over 1,000 CA Sri Lanka members living and working in Australia, Sri Lanka and other parts of the world. The year 2023 commenced with the Inaugural Chartered Ball, which brought together members for a night of networking and festivity. This event not only marked a joyous occasion but also underscored the chapter’s unwavering commitment to nurturing strong relationships within the Australian community.

Following the ball, the Chapter organised its very first business forum in collaboration with the Sri Lankan Consulate General Office in Melbourne under the timely theme “Reignite Sri Lanka 2023,” which served as a critical platform for members and representatives of Australian businesses to exchange insights, ideas, and strategies for economic growth in Sri Lanka as it continues its efforts to overcome the ongoing economic crisis. The forum showcased the Australian Chapter’s dedication to fostering economic development, promoting thought leadership within its ranks, and going beyond its efforts to help revive the island nation from the current economic crisis.

During the year, the CA Sri Lanka Australia Chapter continued to expand its footprint by hosting its inaugural in-person Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Fellowship event in Perth, Western Australia, further strengthening ties with the Australian community. Apart from organising numerous other CPD events on multiple topics, the Chapter also celebrated International Women’s Day in March this year with a CPD event in collaboration with CA Sri Lanka’s Women Empowerment and Leadership Development Committee, which showcased the Chapter’s commitment to gender diversity and women’s leadership in the accounting field.

The Association of Public Finance Accountants of Sri Lanka (APFASL), which is the public sector wing of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka) showcased the pinnacle of financial reporting excellence in the public sector with the announcement of the winners for the seventh annual Best Annual Report & Accounts (BARA) awards competition at a grand event held at the BMICH, Colombo, on 04th December 2023.

This year’s competition, based on the financial accounts of 2022, received an overwhelming response, with a record-breaking 238 entries. The BARA Awards, the flagship event organised by APFASL, aim to promote and uphold financial accounting and reporting standards in Sri Lanka, contributing to the enhancement of the overall quality of public financial management in the country.

The competition featured twelve categories covering both central government and local government institutions. Evaluation criteria included adherence to Ministry of Finance circulars related to financial account preparation and presentation, as well as compliance with Sri Lanka Public Sector Accounting standards.

A total of 12 Gold, 17 Silver, and 12 Bronze awards were awarded among the participating public sector organisations. Additionally, 154 entities received “compliance” recognition, while 41 were acknowledged for their “active participation” in the competition.

The coveted titles of overall winners were awarded to six outstanding institutions from both the central government and provincial categories. The University of Sri Jayewardenepura claimed the gold award in the Central Government category, showcasing exceptional financial reporting practices, while the Southern Provincial Council emerged triumphant in the Local Government category, securing the top position.

The awards ceremony was graced by the presence of Mr. Niel Asoka Ranjith, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, who served as the chief guest. The other notable dignitaries in attendance included Mr. Sujeewa Rajapakse, Chairman of People’s Bank, Mr. Sanjaya Bandara, President of CA Sri Lanka, Mr. Heshana Kuruppu, Vice President of CA Sri Lanka, and Mr. V. Kanagasabapathy, President of APFASL. The event drew over 400 invitees, representing the participating entities of this year’s competition.

The BARA awards ceremony stands as a testament to the commitment of Sri Lanka’s public sector institutions to uphold the highest standards of financial reporting, contributing to the transparency and accountability of public finances in the nation. The streets of Colombo came alive on Saturday, as the highly anticipated ‘Walk the World of Numbers’ parade, hosted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka), unfolded from Malalasekera Mawatha to Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo 7.

The grand parade, dedicated to marking International Accounting Day, saw an impressive turnout of Chartered Accountants, Accounting Professionals, and enthusiastic students, who transformed the parade into a joyous spectacle of unity and camaraderie.

The event was inaugurated by the President of CA Sri Lanka, Mr. Sanjaya Bandara, in the presence of Vice President Mr. Heshana Kuruppu, Members of the Council, acting CEO Ms. Lakmali Priyangika, and representatives from other accounting bodies. The colourful parade, symbolising the journey of numbers and the integral role of accountants, set off with an air of excitement and purpose.

As the procession wound its way through the streets of Colombo, it became a visual testament to the collective strength of the accounting community in the country. The parade, a display of unity, highlighted the crucial role accountants play in ensuring financial well-being and upholding the integrity of the profession, not only in Sri Lanka but across the globe.

The grand finale at Viharamahadevi Park was marked by a symbolic gesture, which was the planting of a “Murutha Tree” by Mr. Sanjaya Bandara, an act which embodied the values of growth, stability, and sustainability within the profession. The parade was formally concluded as hundreds of balloons were released into the sky, to symbolise the unity and strength of the accounting profession.

In a significant milestone, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka) together with its Business School celebrated the grand inauguration of their highly anticipated Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme, setting the stage for professional excellence.

The inaugural intake of the CA Sri Lanka world-class MBA programme in October showcased an impressive number of registrations, demonstrating a rich diversity among participants, which included CEOs, CFOs, managers, auditors, executives, lawyers, and professionals representing multiple sectors such as FMCG, apparel, and the hospitality industry, among others.

The inauguration was graced by Mr. Bingumal Thewarathanthri, Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank Sri Lanka, Mr. Sanjaya Bandara, President of CA Sri Lanka, Mr. Heshana Kuruppu, Vice President of CA Sri Lanka, Mr. Laknath Jayawickrama, Chairman of the CA Business School, as well as Council Members and Ms. Lakmali Priyangika, acting Chief Executive Officer of CA Sri Lanka.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Bandara said that year after year, CA Sri Lanka has dedicated itself to elevating the professional standards of Chartered Accountants as well as non-accounting professionals to ensure that the Institute’s professional benchmarks align with international excellence. “The introduction of CA Sri Lanka’s MBA programme is part of our ongoing mission to foster the growth of visionary business leaders capable of reshaping and sustaining businesses amidst an increasingly competitive landscape.”

Apart from organising numerous other CPD events on multiple topics, the Chapter also celebrated International Women’s Day in March this year with a CPD event in collaboration with CA Sri Lanka’s Women Empowerment and Leadership Development Committee, which showcased the Chapter’s commitment to gender diversity and women’s leadership in the accounting field.

Over 2,000 Chartered Accountants including business leaders and c-suite executives embarked on an exhilarating journey at the 44th National Conference of Chartered Accountants organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka) early this month.

Under the theme, ‘Beyond the Perfect Storm: Seizing the Opportunity,’ delegates at the Monarch Imperial immersed themselves in a mesmerizing array of sessions, unveiling the intricate world of finance and accounting in an ever-evolving global landscape. During two days of technical sessions, renowned experts of both local and international repute, presented an exclusive opportunity for attendees to gain knowledge, exchange insights, and explore the latest advancements in their respective fields while addressing contemporary and future challenges across the professional, corporate, and economic spheres.

The first session, titled “Facing the Storm with Courage,” showcased Dr. Mohit D Gupta, Professor of Cardiology at GB Pant Hospital in New Delhi, India. The second session, “Leveraging AI and Digitalization,” featured experts Jayantha Fernando, Partner at Heritage Partners and Director at the Colombo Stock Exchange and Sri Lanka CERT, alongside Sharon van Rooyen, Forensic & Integrity Services Leader at EY Africa. Steering the third session on “Seizing Opportunities in Agri & Healthcare Industries” were Senarath Kiriwaththuduwage, Director at Hayleys Agriculture Holdings Limited (HAHL), and Chief Executive Officer of Crop Protection and Planting Material Business at HAHL, and Suneth Haputhanthri, General Manager at Hemas Hospitals and Laboratories.

The fourth session, “Sustainable Growth with Blue Horizons & Green Opportunities,” featured Prof. P.B. Terney Pradeep Kumara, Professor in Oceanography, Department of Oceanography & Marine Geology, University of Ruhuna and Director, Centre for International Affairs (CINTA), University of Ruhuna and Dr. Sonali Senaratna Sellamuttu, Country Representative Sri Lanka, Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). The fifth session, “Journey of a Dreamer,” showcased a dynamic lineup of speakers, including Sahan Clive Bakmiwewa, Group Chief Executive Officer of Silk Route Ventures; Irfan Thassim, Founder and Managing Director of Oceanpick Private Limited; Kalana Muthumuni, Chief Executive Officer of Hyperglade; and Thushari Weerakoon, Managing Director of Ramya Horticulture Private Limited.

The three-day mega conference culminated with a fireside chat, where experts from diverse sectors and industries engaged in thought-provoking conversations to broaden participants’ perspectives. The panel included Shiromal Cooray, Chairperson and Managing Director of Jetwing Travels; Duminda Hulangamuwa, Country Managing Partner at Ernst & Young and Chairman of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce; Dhananath Fernando, Chief Executive Officer of the Advocata Institute; and Naresh Abeyesekera, Chief Executive Officer of SECQUORO and Board Director of Bank of Ceylon.
