Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) excelled recently at the Global Ports Forum Awards 2021 and was awarded the title of the Most Efficient Terminal Operator for the year 2021. The award recognizes an international port or terminal operator that has achieved exceptional excellence in terminal efficiency by enhancing capacity and productivity through sustainable and consistent growth, while also providing high quality of service and value additions to customers.

Presented to CICT at the Global Ports Forum Awards ceremony, held at the Shangri-La, Dubai on the 28th of March 2022, the Award for the Most Efficient Terminal Operator was accepted on behalf of CICT by Ms. Catriona Jayasundera, Senior General Manager – Commercial and Marketing. CICT received this accolade in recognition of its exceptional performance in 2021.

Efficiency is a huge focus area for CICT, and a key differentiator for the organization, as it firmly believes that operational efficiency is one of the most valued benefits offered by a container terminal. CICT has been working hard to ensure the highest levels of productivity. Thus, achieving this award brings global recognition, not just to CICT, but also to the Port of Colombo.

Expressing her gratitude, Ms. Jayasundera said, “This year’s accolade is of significant importance to us, as we have battled against the odds and faced unsurmountable challenges, but found a way around it all to deliver the highest standards of service and productivity, to which our customers have become accustomed. This award celebrates our diligent efforts and our unwillingness to give up in the face of adversity. Thus, we take this opportunity to not only thank the Global Ports Forum, but also our valued customers and partners, who have stood together with us as we unwaveringly worked towards mutual objectives. We look forward to utilizing the experience we have gained, and lessons we have learned, to push the boundaries even further to deliver the best service standards, productivity and efficiency in the future.”

The award for Most Efficient Terminal Operator 2021 is the second international award received by CICT for its efforts in the immediate post-covid environment. Last year, in November, CICT was recognized as the Best Container Terminal in Asia (under 4 million teu category), for a record 5th consecutive year at the Asian Freight, Logistics and Supply Chain awards. The Award for Most Efficient Terminal is granted to a terminal that has excelled in terms of efficiency and productivity, and is the result of a rigorous judging process, conducted by an independent panel made up of industry experts and veterans.

Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT), which is managed by China Merchants Port Group (CMPort), is responsible for the management of the South Terminal of the Port of Colombo, the first deep water terminal in South Asia, equipped with all facilities to handle the largest vessels afloat. Since its inception in 2014, the terminal has incrementally grown the volumes it handles; from 686,639 teus in 2014 to 3.2 million teus in 2021.

Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) is ending 2021 on a high note, celebrating its milestone 10th anniversary in Sri Lanka on 22nd December and reaching the milestone of 3 million teus within a year for the first time.

The company said its throughput for the full year is expected to reach approximately 3.1 million teus by 31st December, representing a healthy increase of around 11 per cent over 2020.

Notably, CICT achieved its first 1 million teus milestone in just eight months, from January to August 2015 and ended that year with 1.56 million teus. The company handled 2 million teus in a single year for the first time in 2016.  It recorded incremental increases in annual throughput thereafter, handling 2.38 million teus in 2017, 2.67 million teus in 2018, 2.9 million teus in 2019 and 2.89 million teus in 2020.

The Company, which manages the Colombo South Terminal, commenced construction of the terminal in December 2011 and began port operations in 2013. The volume handled by the terminal has grown five-fold since then.

“We are delighted to have played the role expected of us with flying colours in our first decade as an integral part of the Port of Colombo,” CICT CEO Mr Jack Huang said. “We have been a significant contributor to the port’s throughput by attracting vessels which would otherwise have bypassed Colombo because of the absence of a deep-water terminal. CICT is also proud to have led the way in promoting eco-friendly operations and innovations in service.”

Sri Lanka’s single largest private-sector foreign investment project at the time, CICT’s noteworthy progress included completion of Stage 1 of the terminal to a quay length of 400m by July 2013, reaching Stage 2 with a quay length of 1000m in December the same year, and completing the terminal with a quay length of 1200m by April 2014.

CICT is also responsible for several firsts in service innovation and eco-friendly operations. These include a US$ 10 million programme to convert its entire fleet of diesel operated rubber-tyred-gantry cranes to electricity driven rubber-tyred gantry cranes (E-RTGs) which have zero carbon emissions by 2017. As a result, CICT achieved a 45 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and a 96 per cent reduction in diesel consumption.

In 2019 the Company added two new mega Quay Gantry Cranes (QGCs) which are now the tallest cranes in the Port of Colombo, to a fleet of QGCs which was already the biggest gantry cranes in the Indian Subcontinent region. This, along with other purchases such as six new Rubber-tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGs) and 12 Prime Movers, were made to enhance the terminal’s deep-water capacity and make Colombo one of the few ports in Asia capable of handling vessels of 22,000 + TEUs. In the same year CICT commissioned Sri Lanka’s first, and South Asia’s most advanced, Dangerous Goods Storage Facility (DGSF) with an investment of US$ 1.5 million.

For five consecutive years since 2017, CICT was also adjudged the Asian Freight, Logistics and Supply Chain (AFLAS) awards winner for the ‘Best Container Terminal in Asia’ in the Under 4 million TEUs category, by Asia Cargo News.

CICT is the first and currently the only deep-water terminal in South Asia equipped with facilities to handle the largest vessels afloat. In 2021 it handled Ever Ace, which is one of the largest container ships in the world with a nominal carrying capacity of 23,992 TEU. The Company has also attracted several other large vessels plying the Asia-Europe routes to Colombo. Of these, MSC Apolline (23,782 TEU), Milan Maersk (20,568 TEU), EMC Ever Glory (20,388 TEU), MSC Maya (19,224 TEU), Mogens Maersk (18,300 TEU), MSC New York (16,652 TEU), CMA CGM Marco Polo (16,020 TEU), Edith Maersk and EMC Thalassa Hellas (each 14,000 plus TEUs) and their sister vessels are now regular callers at CICT.

In 2016, CICT also funded the refurbishment of two international standard hard surface courts at the SLTA to bolster the sport in the country.

CICT’s acceptance of the mantle of main sponsor of the SLTA’s Wheelchair Tennis Programme has enabled Sri Lankan players to participate in many international tournaments, resulting in the country being ranked among the top 40 countries that play wheelchair tennis.

Commenting on the company’s longstanding commitment to the Wheelchair Tennis Programme, CICT CEO Mr Jack Huang said: “CICT is proud of the players and their progress, and is happy to have played a supportive role in the development of the sport. We hope to continue to support the SLTA in this sphere in the years ahead.”

The Wheelchair Tennis Programme was initiated in Sri Lanka in 2003 as a rehabilitation programme for disabled soldiers. Currently, Sri Lanka has 10 wheelchair tennis players who have secured international rankings.

The winner of this prestigious award was announced on Thursday 21st October at the 2021 Asian Freight, Logistics and Supply Chain (AFLAS) awards gala at the New World Millennium Hotel in Hong Kong.

“This award is a victory not just for CICT but for the Port of Colombo, of which we are an integral part,” CICT CEO Mr Jack Huang said. “Competition among ports is intense at the best of times and more so when the global shipping and cargo logistics sectors are faced with disruptions and challenges due to a pandemic and the resultant economic downturn. This award affirms CICT’s ability to maintain efficiency and competitiveness in the face of adversity and is a tribute to the commitment and passion of the CICT team as well as to the support we receive from the Sri Lanka Ports Authority to maintain operations at optimal levels.”

CICT, which is managed by China Merchants Port Group (CMPort), beat three other shortlisted finalists in its category – Dalian International Container Terminal (China), Jakarta International Container Terminal (Indonesia) and Laem Chabang International Terminal (Thailand) – to win the AFLAS award.
