INSEE Cement, the leading manufacturer of cement and cement-related products, has made history by becoming the first company in Sri Lanka to receive Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for its comprehensive product portfolio.

An EPD is an internationally recognized standard that offers comprehensive, standardized and third-party verified information regarding the environmental performance of products throughout their lifecycle. INSEE Cement’s diverse range of cement and cement-related products have undergone a stringent assessment and verification, assuring compliance with the highest sustainability product standards.

“At INSEE, we envision a future where construction harmonizes seamlessly with the environment. Our EPD certification represents a significant step towards that vision,” says Jan Kunigk, INSEE Cement’s Chief Executive Officer. “Our goal is to consistently provide our customers with top-quality, eco-friendly building solutions and we will drive ahead with our innovation and investments in sustainable practices.”

An EPD is a standardized document informing about a product’s environmental and human health impact. It’s based on the ISO 14025 standard and the scientific foot printing method Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The goal of an EPD is to inform and communicate with stakeholders about a product’s environmental impact.

By providing transparent and comprehensible information about the environmental impact of its products, INSEE Cement empowers architects, engineers, and builders to make informed choices that contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.

EPD International AB, a limited company registered in Sweden, is the programme operator and has the overall responsibility for the administration and operation of the International EPD System. Sebastiaan Stiller, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of EPD International AB commended INSEE Cement for its achievement. “In general, companies implement EPDs to transparently declare the environmental performance of their products. To demonstrate their commitment and contributions to a greener society. With INSEE being the first company in Sri Lanka receiving our EPDs is an achievement both the company and the country can be very proud of,” he said.

INSEE Cement is now exceptionally positioned to serve its customers with cutting-edge, sustainable building solutions that not only meet their construction needs but also significantly reduce carbon emissions and promote the responsible use of natural resources.

INSEE Cement, Sri Lanka’s number one cement manufacturing company, has entered into an agreement with the Ranaviru Seva Authority under the Ministry of Defence to provide cement at a concessionary price to families of war veterans who were disabled or killed in combat.

This is part of a broader initiative by INSEE Cement, launched earlier this year, to provide cement bags at a concessionary price to all Tri-armed forces personnel, in recognition of their services to Sri Lanka. This latest phase particularly reflects INSEE Cement’s deep appreciation for the invaluable service and commitment and sacrifices of Sri Lanka’s veteran war heroes and their families.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by the Chairman of the Ranaviru Seva Authority of the Ministry of Defence Major General Nandana Senadeera (Retired) and Nandana Ekanayake, Chairman of INSEE Cement Sri Lanka. INSEE Cement was also represented by Chandana Nanayakkara, the Head of Channel Development and External Affairs and Gayani Perera, the Head of Marketing.

“We at INSEE Cement deeply appreciate the invaluable service of Sri Lanka’s war heroes. We hope this concessionary cement will help these families to embark on construction projects that are important to them, help them rebuild their lives and contribute to their communities,” says Nandana Ekanayake, INSEE Cement’s Chairman. “It is a clear demonstration of our INSEE commitment to care for our communities. We seek to empower and uplift these deserving individuals by providing them with essential resources to enhance their quality of life.”

Under the agreement, each family will be eligible for a maximum of 300 INSEE Sanstha cement bags at a concessionary price. Those families who wish to avail themselves of this initiative can reach out to the Ranaviru Seva Authority to secure a coupon that they can redeem for the concessionary price of cement at the time of purchase.

The Chairman of the Ranaviru Seva Authority thanked INSEE Cement for its invaluable support. “We salute INSEE Cement for their dedication to the well-being of our war veterans and for standing by them in their journey of resilience and progress. This generous gesture honors the sacrifices and contributions of our brave heroes. It will empower our war veterans and their families to rebuild their lives and contribute to the betterment of our communities.”

INSEE Cement, Sri Lanka’s #1 cement brand and solutions provider, has been awarded the ISO 39001:2012 certification, in recognition of its road traffic safety (RTS) management system. This is the first time a private sector entity in Sri Lanka has received this certification.

INSEE Cement Sri Lanka – registered as Siam City Cement (Lanka) Limited – is a member of the Siam City Cement Public Company Limited (SCCC) based in Thailand. INSEE Cement Sri Lanka is also the first among the SCCC Group to receive the certification.

“ISO 39001:2012 is a landmark certification for Sri Lanka. It recognizes the proactive measures INSEE has taken to ensure that our road safety management system is in line with globally recognized international standards,” says Jan Kunigk, Chief Executive Officer of INSEE Cement Sri Lanka. “Corporate entities have a responsibility to ensure their respective operations adhere to strict, effective and efficient measures to make the roads safer for the people in Sri Lanka. We are ready to help others do the same and improve their road safety culture.”

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 39001:2012 was awarded to INSEE Cement by Bureau Veritas, a world leader in testing, inspection and certification.  The certification covers both INSEE Cement and its waste management arm INSEE Ecocycle. It provides the template for the best practice for road management in an organizational context. It is designed to help organizations reduce, and ultimately eliminate, incidents and risk of deaths and serious injuries due to road traffic crashes.

“INSEE Cement logistics operations cover over 20 million kilometers each year due to our broad distribution network reaching the four corners of Sri Lanka and the scale of our operations.  With this certification, we are confident that our road traffic safety management system is helping increase road safety, lower road traffic incident rates and curb the risk of injuries or fatalities in our operations,” says Randika Moses, Head of Health and Safety for INSEE Cement in Sri Lanka.”

According to the National Council for Road Safety, road traffic accidents are the root cause of an average of eight deaths per day in Sri Lanka. Each year up to 38,000 road traffic accidents take place around the country.

The ISO 39001:2012 certification contributes to three of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals; Goal 3 focusing good health and wellbeing, Goal 11 which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, and Goal 12 which centers on ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns.

INSEE Cement Sri Lanka is forging ahead with a “green” ambition to fulfill its economic, environmental, and social responsibilities to the people of Sri Lanka and become one of the foremost sustainability advocates in the country by 2030.

In its Sustainability Report 2020/2021 released this week, INSEE Cement has highlighted the significant and tangible progress in the areas of climate and energy, strengthening the circular economy, and protecting biodiversity and water. Additionally, the report includes concrete actions taken to ensure the occupational health and safety of its workforce and galvanize communities and other stakeholders, which are key aspects of INSEE Cement’s 2030 sustainability ambition.

Delivering the keynote address at an event to mark the report’s launch, Secretary to the Ministry of Environment Dr. Anil Jasinghe highlighted the important role of corporates in climate action and appreciated the significant efforts INSEE Cement has accomplished. “The future of this country is in the hands of green development. This does not mean compromising on economic growth,” he said.  “Industries must contribute to nationally driven efforts on green development. If not, we run the restrict of losing out our competitiveness in the global market. A very important aspect is ensuring good governance pragmatically and rationally.”

Speaking at the event, INSEE Cement’s CEO Jan Kunigk described how INSEE confronted head-on the challenges of the pandemic period and put in place the necessary health and safety measures to continue sustainability and biodiversity conservation efforts. “Rather than allowing COVID-19 challenges to consume us, we focused on supporting vulnerable communities in areas we operate, while innovating and investing in staying the course in our sustainability ambition,” he said.

INSEE Cement’s CEO also noted the important role of the company’s waste management arm, INSEE Ecocycle in taking others along on the sustainability journey. “Following the expansion of our Ecocycle operation in 2020, we now offer end-to-end solutions to customers, to support the systematic collection of fast-moving consumer goods waste and post-consumer waste and transform it into alternative energy and other valuable resources. So far, we have served over 1000 customers in co-processing and eliminated over 1,000,000 metric tons of industrial waste, which otherwise would have ended up in landfills.”

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is a key partner in INSEE Cement’s sustainability and biodiversity conservation efforts.  IUCN Sri Lanka’s Country Representative Dr. Shamen Vidanage highlighted the importance of such partnerships. “We provide technical knowledge, so INSEE Cement can venture on this sustainability and biodiversity conservation journey along the right path. As a result, we have science based initiatives field tested for many years and now emerged as best practices in ecosystem restoration, ecological monitoring and coral reef restoration. The commitment of corporate partners like INSEE Cement is imperative. If we don’t take the right actions towards sustainability and environmental conservation today, we will face far greater challenges in the not-so-distant future.”.”

INSEE’s efforts to reduce CO2 emissions in its product profile have seen the Company go beyond the conventional product innovation strategies to adopt a more holistic approach to reduce the carbon footprint of its products. In 2021, this drive to innovate led to the development of Sri Lanka’s “greenest” cement, INSEE Sanstha Portland Composite Cement.

Closes 2022 with successful extension of multiple long-term, high-impact biodiversity restoration projects

INSEE Cement, Sri Lanka’s #1 cement brand and solutions provider, closed 2022 by continuing to execute a number of large-scale biodiversity conservation projects, investing in the recovery and regeneration of Sri Lanka’s endemic ecosystems for the benefit of generations to come.

With the launch of INSEE Sustainability Ambition 2030 – INSEE’s global group-wide sustainability strategy – INSEE Cement aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other global frameworks, and made social, economic and environmental sustainability a defining part of the company’s identity. One of the fundamental pillars of INSEE’s Sustainability Ambition 2030 is Biodiversity and Water Conservation, a focus area that was organically integrated in to the company’s operations years prior to being formally defined as a key element of the strategy, based on the fundamental nature of its business.

For years, INSEE Cement Sri Lanka has demonstrated a strong commitment to biodiversity conservation by maintaining long-term partnerships with organizations such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and Biodiversity Sri Lanka – a national platform entirely owned and driven by private sector organizations for biodiversity and environmental conservation. The company continued to implement a number of long-term high-impact projects in 2022, with key projects highlighted below:

Animal Rescue Program

Initiated in 2008 as part of the Quarry Rehabilitation Program conducted at INSEE’s Aruwakkalu quarry site with the aim of restoring the ecosystem back to pre-quarrying conditions, the Animal Rescue Program has now become an annual operation positioned high on the INSEE employee volunteer calendar. This operation involves the rescue of less mobile small animals as well as rare fauna representing every stage of the food chain to ensure genetic diversity and minimize risk of extinction. The translocation of these animals and fauna to safe sites in the immediate environment increases their chances of survival. This is the first ever such project carried out by a private sector organization in Sri Lanka and the longest monitoring mission ever conducted continuously over such a period in the country. The methodology used has now been incorporated into national-level development projects as a species conservation tool of best practice. During 2022, a total of 2400 small animals and 82 fauna species were translocated as part of the program.

Correction: The first iteration of this article published on 27 January 2023 included a photograph of a coral restoration project that did not fall under the purview of INSEE Cement Sri Lanka. The company regrets the error, which was rectified on 23 February 2023. INSEE Cement Sri Lanka thanks the individual with a keen eye who brought the error to its attention.

Extends its operational presence across multiple provinces to engage and encourage schoolchildren with multiple sustainability development projects

INSEE Cement, Sri Lanka’s largest and leading construction solutions provider has focused on “long-term impact investments” by engaging and uniting schoolchildren behind the common goal of creating change in their communities.

With the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by the United Nations recognizing children as ‘critical agents of change’, INSEE Cement has nurtured thousands of students in the Southern, North Western and North Central Provinces over the past few years.

“As industry leaders and responsible corporate citizens, it is our duty to support the future generation of this country by laying a strong foundation for them today, in the present, regardless of the challenges that we are facing as a country,” CEO and Chairman of INSEE Cement, Nandana Ekanayake stated.

Mr. Ekanayake said by encouraging students through knowledge and awareness on sustainable development, INSEE Cement is equipping them to become positive change agents  in their local communities,  and is helping them to leverage their knowledge and become the next generation of leaders for a sustainable future.

The company launched a comprehensive, long-term, group-wide strategy titled INSEE Sustainability Ambition 2030 and provided holistic education to students across the fundamental pillars of INSEE’s Sustainability Ambition 2030: i.e. Climate & Energy, Biodiversity & Water, Circular Economy, Community & Stakeholder Engagement, and Occupational Health & Safety.

Balancing environmental, social, and economic impact

Under a large-scale tree-planting initiative 6,000 students aged between 5 – 15 from 28 schools in Anuradhapura and Puttalam Districts were educated on environmental best practices. The schools were provided over 10,000 fruit saplings to instill a sense of responsibility and urgency to addressing climate change.

Along with successful reforestation of over 87 hectares of the Aruwakkalu Quarry, the company initiated a monthly environmental mentorship programme in Wanathawilluwa. Each month, 25 young and aspiring environmentalists in six schools gather to understand environmental challenges and opportunities impacting Sri Lanka’s dry zone forests.

To address Municipal Solid Waste Management crisis, INSEE Cement provided several schools in Galle district with solid waste management facilities. Over 3,000 students and 180 teachers were trained on solid waste segregation by waste management experts from INSEE Ecocycle – INSEE Cement’s environmental services and waste management arm. The project was expanded several schools in Puttalam District as well.

For creating awareness on social issues number of sensitive topics and challenges were discussed including drug addiction and abuse among school children. Accordingly, an awareness campaign took place for over 500 school children, teachers and parents from 15 schools in Southern Province. Also, an awareness campaign on preventing child abuses was also held to commemorate Children’s Day, with the participation of 600 female students in 10 schools in Galle District.

INSEE Cement sponsored sports activities in eight Grama Niladhari Divisions in Puttalam District, focusing physical and psychological wellbeing of schoolchildren through sports, helping them develop leadership and social skills, discipline and competitive spirit. Over 400 children in Puttalam District are currently participating in INSEE-sponsored Cricket and Volleyball training activities.

The company partnered with Sri Lanka Police to train and certify 500 school traffic wardens to improve awareness on road safety rules and regulations among students, parents, and the school communities.

INSEE adopts a scientific methodology in conducting community-based sustainability engagements. A plant-level Community Advisory Panels (CAPs) were established to bring together community leaders, District Secretariat authorities, Grama Niladaris and an internal cross-functional INSEE team. CAP identifies and prioritizes projects that can make the most impact “example RO water filtration plant at Eluwankulama Sinhala School. Social Impact Assessments are carried out to measure the success of each project and obtain feedback from the communities.

Continues globally acclaimed biodiversity conservation projects, targeting Net Positive Impact (NPI) on biodiversity at sites where the company operates

Colombo, Sri Lanka (26 September, 2022): INSEE Cement, Sri Lanka’s largest and leading cement manufacturer, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) today, extending their long-standing partnership to continue INSEE’s globally recognized biodiversity projects by three more years. The MoU was formalized by Chairman and CEO of INSEE Cement Nandana Ekanayake, and Anshuman Saikia, Coordinator – Regional Portfolio Management and officer in charge of IUCN Sri Lanka Country Office.

“By entering into this MoU, INSEE Cement continues to demonstrate our strong commitment to biodiversity management and conservation in Sri Lanka,” commented Rohan Lakmal, Environment and CSR Manager at INSEE Cement, also present during the signing. “Biodiversity is one of the fundamental pillars of INSEE’s Sustainability Ambition 2030. Our partnership with IUCN enables INSEE Cement to meet our own ambitious sustainability targets while also creating more awareness on the general decline in Sri Lanka’s biodiversity, and the urgency to do our part to conserve our natural habitats.”

The partnership with IUCN for quarry rehabilitation extends as far back as 2007, and was continuously renewed every three years with satisfactory and measurable results. Following the signing, INSEE and IUCN further extends the agreement from 2022 to 2025. The renewed projects include field surveys, monitoring and recommendations for restored quarry sites, wildlife rescue and release activities, and baseline assessments of Koggala and Aruwakkalu mangrove restoration sites as well as the artificial coral reefs at Unawatuna. The agreement also provides opportunities for INSEE Cement volunteers to engage with other environmental conservation activities carried out by the IUCN across the island.

As Sri Lanka’s only integrated cement manufacturer, INSEE Cement clears an average 25 acres of forestland annually for limestone mining in accordance with operational licenses from the Geological Survey & Mines Bureau, Central Environmental Authority (CEA) and Provincial Environmental Act (PEA) of Sri Lanka, the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance of Sri Lanka, and the Ramsar Convention framework among other local and international treaties and regulations. Beyond this extensive approval process, INSEE Cement partners with the IUCN to assess environmental impact, conduct special biodiversity mapping and follow a comprehensive biodiversity management plan to minimize the disruption to surrounding ecosystems. The project also includes an animal rescue and release programme that relocates 2500 slow moving and small animals on average to safer areas in the immediate environment. To date, INSEE Cement has successfully restored over 137 hectares of the Aruwakkalu quarry.

Over the last decade, INSEE Cement has initiated a number of mangrove reforestation activities in coastal areas in the vicinity of its manufacturing plants in Puttalam and Galle, covering an area of 7 hectares through reforestation to date, with a sustainability ambition to restore 66 hectares of mangrove forests by 2023. The company also partnered with coral experts from the IUCN Sri Lanka and the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) to preserve degraded marine habitats and coral reefs off the coast of Unawatuna.

Through this renewed commitment, INSEE Cement plans to review existing projects and develop a more comprehensive biodiversity strategy within the framework of the INSEE Sustainability Ambition 2030, and identify and develop new initiatives that further promotes biodiversity conservation while also supporting sustainable livelihoods in the communities where INSEE operates.

Successfully completing multiple CSR projects for the first half of the year 2022

INSEE Cement, Sri Lanka’s largest and leading cement manufacturer, closed the first half of an unprecedented year by continuing to invest in a number of community development projects, impacting over 500,000 beneficiaries. The projects were carried out around Puttalam Cement Works (PCW) and Ruhunu Cement Works (RCW), with INSEE Cement nurturing strong synergies in the communities in which they operate through employment, empowerment, community development, and numerous social projects that have ensured the communities’ advancement alongside that of the company.

By launching the comprehensive, long-term, group-wide strategy titled INSEE Sustainability Ambition 2030, INSEE Cement aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other global frameworks, and made social, economic, and environmental sustainability a defining part of INSEE Cement’s identity. One of the fundamental pillars of INSEE’s Sustainability Ambition 2030 is Community & Stakeholder Engagement.

Earning the License to Operate

To create impactful community engagement, INSEE Cement has established plant-level Community Advisory Panels (CAPs) that bring together community leaders, District Secretariat authorities, woman and child bureau, Sri Lanka police, Heads of religious places, Department of education, Central Environment Authority, Department of agriculture, department of health, Municipality, Grama Niladari’s (Village Level Administrative Officer) and an internal cross-functional INSEE team. With ground-level access to the community, CAP identified and prioritized a number of projects for INSEE Cement for 2022, out of which several have been completed with Social Impact Assessments scheduled for the second half of the year to obtain feedback from the respective communities.

Community Development remains one of INSEE’s core areas of focus under Community & Stakeholder Engagement and is further segregated into access to education, healthcare, clean water supply, and sanitization. In terms of access to education, INSEE Cement supported four pre-schools – two in the vicinity of PCW, RCW and one in Eluwankulam – both financially and in-kind, to ensure a strong cognitive, emotional as well as physical foundation in early childhood education, to nurture a more well-rounded future generation in Sri Lanka. The company also collaborated with the ISURU Reading Club to establish a library in Attavilluwa, Puttalam supplying a range of books across multiple genres and maintaining the library and its resources to ensure its benefits can be enjoyed by the community members for years to come.

Under access to healthcare, INSEE Cement continued its far-reaching and long-standing community wellness initiative of facilitating free weekly medical clinics as well as annual medical camps that provide free screenings and consultations. In Puttalam, free medical clinics continued to be facilitated twice a week at community development centers, with the annual medical camp this year reaching over 1500 villagers in the Eluwankulam area. In Galle, medical consultants from the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, Mahamodara Maternity Teaching Hospital, nurses from Ruhunu Hospital (Pvt) Ltd, and another volunteer paramedical staff participated, issuing over 500 spectacles at the camp which was supported by the Lions Club International District 306A/1, the Galle District Health & Medical Service Unit, Ruhunu Hospital, and the Eye Care Unit at the Lions Gift of Sight Hospital in Panadura.

INSEE Cement renewed its commitment to deliver access to clean water this year to a number of schools located in close proximity to PCW by maintaining six Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants to purify water, benefiting the children, teachers, parents, and communities. The company also sought the help of the Puttalam CAP including Grama Niladhari Officers in the area to identify families in need to provide access to sanitization and hygiene by aiding in the construction of lavatories, a much-needed facility in the area.

The Welfare Association of RCW also voluntarily organized ‘Api Yamu Pansal’ – a special event as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility for the elderly population in the vicinity – an underserved segment of the community. The company partnered with Bounavista, an elder’s home in the area, to respond to a CAP request to facilitate a tour for the elderly residents of the home to the Hambantota Birds Park, Kataharagama and  Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, to elevate their spiritual as well as mental wellbeing. All logistics as well as other spiritual facilities were provided by the company.

INSEE Cement also extended the expertise of their industry-leading industrial waste management arm INSEE Ecocycle to address the growing challenge of waste management across the island and partnered with the Sri Lankan chapter of the global youth volunteering platform AIESEC to launch an initiative to educate school children and nurture good practices on proper waste management and highlight its benefit to the society. INSEE Ecocycle worked together with selected AIESEC resource persons to equip them with the necessary knowledge on waste management and waste segregation and carried out a successful pilot program at Janadhipathi Balika Vidyalaya Galle. The promising response saw the program scheduled to be launched at six more schools in close proximity to PCW and RCW in the coming months.

“Despite the challenges we have faced this year as a country, INSEE Cement understood the importance of continuing to support and develop our communities, in a time when they truly needed a helping hand as well as the assurance of our loyalty to them,” Nandana Ekenayaka, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer at INSEE Cement said. “Our every action reflects INSEE Cement’s commitment to our people and our communities, and we will continue to invest in their development as the country continues on its road to recovery.”
