31st January 2023: A perceptive foretaste of the reputational challenges that await businesses and brand builders in a world that is Rapid, Uncertain, Polarised and Tangled (RUPT) was provided to a corporate audience in Colombo at a thought leadership forum organised by the Public Relations Association of Sri Lanka (PRASL).

The presenter was the globally-renowned reputation management specialist Ashwani Singla, the Founding Managing Partner of Astrum, India’s first specialist reputation management advisory, and the Co-founder and former Chief Executive of Burson-Marsteller India.

The presentation outlined how technological developments, artificial intelligence and new social ideologies like ‘Wokeism’ and ‘Cancel Culture’ are reshaping communications and making reputation a major competitive advantage for brands.  Citing real-life examples, Mr Singla demonstrated how AI-generated disinformation and societal/political polarization are now at the top of the risk landscape.

He stressed the importance of using insights from data science and social science and research on public opinion, media analytics and social media analytics to create purpose-driven brands to negotiate the complex landscape of Reputation, Risk & Regulation in a “RUPTered World.”

The thought-provoking presentation was extremely well received by the audience, which included many eminent business leaders.

The speaker Ashwani Singla has also served as Asia MD of Penn Schoen and Berland (PSB), where he used voter insights to guide the Campaign Committee of the BJP as its campaign strategist and delivered a historic victory in 2014, in addition to maintaining a clean sheet of several state elections over the last decade.

The first in a planned series of thought leadership forums of the PRASL, the event took place at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel, the Association’s Hospitality Partner. SriLankan Airlines is the PRASL’s Airline Partner.

The Public Relations Association of Sri Lanka was formally launched in 2023 to address a long-felt need to give voice to the industry, infuse high standards, and develop the skills of professional practitioners. The Association’s objectives include gaining recognition for PR practice and enhancing its influence, fostering high professional standards and ethical practices as a valued PR industry, and bringing together and representing public relations practitioners. PRASL also aims to provide thought leadership events and networking opportunities for members to exchange ideas and professional experiences, all while keeping the interests of its members and the wider society in mind.

Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) in collaboration with Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) are hosting an exclusive session on “Why organizations worldwide and in Sri Lanka are adopting sustainability reporting using GRI Standards and how it benefits them”. This is an online session on 09th April 2021 (Friday), 10:00- 11:00 hours.

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is an independent international standard-setting organization that helps businesses and governments worldwide understand and communicate their impact on critical sustainability issues such as climate change, human rights, governance and social well-being.

The practice of disclosing sustainability information inspires accountability, helps identify and manage risks, and enables organizations to seize new opportunities. Reporting with the GRI Standards supports companies, public and private, large and small, to protect the environment and improve society, while at the same time thriving economically by improving governance and stakeholder relations, enhancing reputations and building trust. The GRI Standards help companies disclose relevant ESG information that support decisions in the best interest of investors and society at large.

2020 KPMG Survey of Sustainability Reporting shows a record number of companies, spanning sectors and geographic regions, are voluntarily choosing to disclose their sustainability impacts – with the GRI Standards the most widely used for reporting. Across all companies surveyed, the GRI Standards is the only sustainability reporting framework that can demonstrate widespread global adoption. Around three-quarters (73%) of the G250 and two-thirds (67%) of the N100 now use GRI. As per a research done by GRI South Asia, 29% of the public listed companies (83 companies) are currently reporting using the GRI standards in Sri Lanka.

GRI’s publication Carrots & Sticks (C&S 2020) provides an analysis of the latest trends in reporting provisions. It reveals 614 reporting requirements and resources across over 80 countries, including Sri Lanka. In 2019 CSE published the ESG guidance document titled Communicating Sustainability Version 02.

As sustainability reporting becomes more widespread, regulators, investors as well as stock exchanges and industry bodies have started to encourage and even demand sustainability data from companies

This is free of charge and the registration link can be obtained by sending an email to chanuka@cse.lk

December 14, 2017:  The United States Agency for International Development (USAID)’s initiative to strengthen youth employability and skills development project, YouLead!, concluded a four-day youth leadership forum on December 9, 2017 at Trace Expert City, Colombo. The closing day brought together 40 youth ambassadors and 60 representatives from the public, private and non-government sectors in interactive and engaging ways to seek solutions that will support and increase youth employment in Sri Lanka.

The forum began with a three-day adventure camp in Kitulgala.  Young women and men selected as youth ambassadors from across Sri Lanka shared their thoughts and aspirations and spoke about the challenges of youth unemployment. Under the theme, ‘It’s our future’, these young ambassadors discussed a wide range of issues including youth employability, suitable employment, and being successful and competitive in the labor market.

USAID’s Assistant Mission Director, Ms. Elizabeth Davnie-Easton said “YouLead! is an investment by the U.S. Government and the American people in Sri Lanka’s youth and a prosperous, stable, and diverse Sri Lanka”.

Following the forum, these young leaders will return to their communities and to their peer groups energized and better prepared to support youth in their communities. These future leaders will actively mentor other youth in their development, and engage with budding young entrepreneurs looking to kick-start their own businesses.

Charles Conconi, YouLead’s Project Director, added “The YouLead! forum will develop and empower emerging young leaders from around the country with different backgrounds to rally around the cause of youth economic empowerment. It provides an opportunity for young leaders and employers to jointly address the constraints related to private sector competitiveness and youth employment. The youth were selected not just for what they have already achieved, but for what we believe they will achieve.”

Inspirational speakers at the closing event at Trace City, included Suranga Nanayakkara, the visionary behind the  ‘Augmented Human Lab,’ which is at the forefront of human computer interface design; Rathika Pathmanathan, writer and activist; and Aruna Samarawickrema, multi-award winning innovator and manufacturer of prosthetic limbs in Sri Lanka; CodeGen co-founder, Dr. Beshan Kalupala, who together with Dr. Harsha Subasinghe, is building Sri Lanka’s first advanced technology supercar; and former Rotary International Governor, K.R Ravindran, a successful, first-generation entrepreneur. Thought-provoking songs by celebrity singers Bathiya and Santhush, and Thurraya, brought the fantastic event to a close.

The USAID-funded YouLead! project is administered by Volunteers for Economic Growth Alliance and implemented by International Executive Service Corps (IESC), an organization that has worked with hundreds of private enterprises in Sri Lanka since 1965. Under YouLead!, IESC will partner with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, the American Chamber of Commerce, Arizona State University, Global Communities, Skills for Life, and Verité Research.
