The Lanka Premier League 2022 wishes to announce the appointment of Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya and Pakistani legend Wasim Akram as the “Brand Ambassadors” of the Lanka Premier League 2022.

Sanath Jayasuriya, one of the most destructive limited-overs batsmen the cricket world has seen, represented Sri Lanka across all formats, scoring over 20,000 international runs and capturing 440 wickets.

Jayasuriya, who also captained the national team, was a member of the Sri Lanka team that won the 1996 World Cup.

“I am extremely happy to be the brand ambassador of the LPL third edition, and wish to state that this tournament is a great addition to the domestic cricket calendar, as it gives us an ideal platform to find and nurture the best cricketing talent that is needed to build our T20i arsenal,’’ said Sanath Jayasurya, the Sri Lankan great.

Wasim Akram, the former Pakistani captain and one of the greatest left-arm bowlers the world has seen, represented his country in both tests and ODIs, capturing a total of 916 international wickets. He also contributed to his team from the bat, scoring over 6500 international runs.

He was a member of the Pakistan team that won the 1992 World Cup.

“I am extremely happy and I am honored to join the Lanka Premier League as a Brand Ambassador. I have always been a big fan of Sri Lankan cricket. The love I have for Sri Lanka and its people is only second to my own country. During the past few international assignments, Sri Lanka’s national T20i team have performed extremely well. I am sure the LPL has played an important role in this resurgence, ” said Wasim Akram.

The two ‘Brand Ambassadors’ will play a major part in promoting the Lanka Premier League among fans.

“We are pleased to announce both Sanath Jayasuriya and Wasim Akram as Brand Ambassadors for the 2022 LPL. Having these two legends will boost the league and attract more followers from the whole world, and help in our quest to make this tournament a global cricketing attraction, “commented Anil Mohan, the CEO and Founder of the IPG Group, which is the rights holder of the LPL.

The Lanka Premier League 2022 will see the participation of international stars such as Evin Lewis, Carlos Brathwaite, Janneman Malan, Dwaine Pretorius, D’Arcy Short, and Shoaib Malik, among several other players.

The two legends, along with current international cricket stars, will garner a lot of international media attention for the Lanka Premier League 2022.

“We are excited to have these two legends on board with us. Both Sanath Jayasuriya and Wasim Akram are great ambassadors of the game we love. Having them as brand ambassadors will give a much needed boost to the league, which has been on a growth path since its inaugural edition conducted two years ago, “added Samantha Dodanwela, Tournament Director of the Lanka Premier League 2022.

Originally planned for August 2022, the much-awaited Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2022 has been rescheduled for December 2022. The decision to move LPL 2022 to the end of the year was taken collectively by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and IPG Sports, the Rights Holder of the tournament, in order to maximize attendance and deliver the best possible positive impact for Sri Lanka’s economy. The LPL, organized by IPG Sports, is a professional cricket league in Sri Lanka for T20 format cricket, and the tournament is played annually. IPG intends to use the LPL 2022 as a platform to help promote tourism in Sri Lanka, while also spreading positivity and smiles during tough times.

Discussing the rescheduling of LPL 2022, Anil Mohan, Chairman and Managing Director of IPG Sports said, “We want maximum exposure for Sri Lanka, and maximum positive impact for the economy, from LPL 2022, and we feel that having it right now would prevent us from achieving that objective. By December, we expect the situation to be more stable and this will mean more foreign fans will visit and players will be able to bring their own family and friends along without any difficulties. Also, coordinating something like this is a massive logistical undertaking and we would like to be able to give the best experience to spectators, so allowing time till December is best. Plus, with the challenges Sri Lankans are facing, we don’t want anyone to feel left out of the excitement of the LPL. Thus, we look forward to a top-notch LPL tournament in December that will deliver all the excitement expected, and also enjoy wider participation from both local and foreign fans.”

The players and teams for the tournament have already been picked, with the official player draft having been successfully completed on the 5th of July 2022, ahead of the series, which was originally scheduled to be held from the 1st to 21st of August 2022. Local and foreign cricketing stars are slated to play in the tournament including the likes of Wanidu Hasaranga, Thisara Perera, and Isuru Udana from Sri Lanka, and international players such as Shoaib Malik, Imad Wasim, Asif Ali, Dwaine Pretorius, Evin Lewis, and Dewald Brevis.

Samantha Dondanwela, Tournament Director of LPL 2022 also commented on the rescheduling saying, “Even though the Lanka Premier League 2022 has had to be rescheduled, due to circumstances beyond our control, I am sure we will be able to conduct the tournament under a ‘New Window’ within a better and an improved economic environment in the country, thus enabling us to hold a tournament, which will appeal to our fans, and also set an excellent platform for our players to perform.”

The new dates and arrangements for LPL 2022 will be communicated in due course, along with arrangements for live telecasts and streaming. IPG and SLC, together take this opportunity to thank all stakeholders for their patience and understanding in this matter.

This media advisory is intended to clarify, for the benefit of all our stakeholders and especially our friends in the media with regard to the false and baseless rumors being spread with malicious intent around the termination of the arrangement pertaining to rights to operate and manage Jaffna Stallions.

To set the record straight, we, the Innovative Production Group FZE (IPG) would like to state the following facts to clear the misinformation and address the rumors, as the Event Rights Holder of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) up to 2024. The termination of the arrangement with Stallion Sports Limited was solely due persistent breach of their obligations, non-compliance with ICC regulations and non-payment of financial dues as per the commitment. These breaches were brought to the attention of Stallion Sports Limited vide multiple communications and in physical meetings since beginning of 2021, but representatives of Stallion Sports Limited have deliberately and maliciously failed to cure the breaches as well as sought to unilaterally amend the commercial deal.

This kind of atrocious, malafide and flagrant behaviour was simply unacceptable and needed to be remedied to safeguard the interest of all stakeholders in our capacity as the Event Rights holder of the Lanka Premier League Tournament.

It is also important to highlight that due to persistent breaches and non-compliance with the ICC regulations, IPG group as the Events Rights’ Holder for the Lanka Premier League, having duly informed Sri-Lanka Cricket the breach of obligations on the part of Stallion Sports Limited, terminated the arrangement with Stallion Sports Limited in consultation with Sri-Lanka Cricket.

The IPG group continues to engage with our stakeholders and work closely with the Sri Lanka Cricket for the betterment and growth of cricket in Sri Lanka. We believe and are committed to delivering on the promise to make the Lanka Premier League one of the best in the world, with the aspiration of providing young Lankan cricketers, a platform to develop their skills and in turn making Sri Lanka cricket the world powerhouse once again.

As mentioned in our earlier media release Mr Allirajah Subaskaran, Chairman of Lyca Group is the new rights holder of the Jaffna based franchisee, which has been renamed as Jaffna Kings for the Lanka Premier League.

We also seek to clarify that the right to secure a broadcaster for the Lanka Premier League vests solely with the IPG, pursuant to the Events Rights Agreement that was entered into between Sri Lanka Cricket and the IPG Group. The IPG Group pursuant to its rights, sought to engage with broadcasters to license the terrestrial rights to broadcast the Lanka Premier League in Sri-Lanka and after successful conclusion of commercial discussions, executed an agreement with Supreme TV. This is a purely a commercial arrangement and motivated individuals are trying to spread false information by spreading rumors and misinformation that the execution of the agreement with Supreme TV was politically motivated.

We request our friends in media to kindly verify the facts of the matter before publishing the same in public and refrain from spreading any rumors & misinformation which may be detrimental to the reputation of Innovative Production Group FZE or the Lanka Premier League.

Colombo: Supreme TV, Sri Lanka’s fastest growing TV channel, has acquired the exclusive rights to broadcast the Lanka Premier League (LPL) in Sri Lanka, from the IPG Group, the official franchise and broadcast holder. The multi-year agreement, positioned as one of the biggest broadcast deals so far in the Island Nation will help LPL penetrate deep into every nook and corner of the country and  Supreme TV is committed to play an integral part in the television and digital transmission of the LPL starting from the second season.

“It is with great pride and humility we undertake this joyous mission. Supreme TV has become a household name and it is the fastest growing Sinhala Language channel in Sri Lanka with special focus on sports and entertainment. At a time when our nation is going through a challenging period due to the Covid-19 pandemic, LPL comes as a breath of fresh air to infuse positivity and regain its character as a sport loving nation. LPL brings to the island the revolutionary concept of franchise T20 cricket which features international cricketers of repute pitched along with our own leading cricketers, not to mention the budding ones who greatly learn from this exposure. One of my biggest hopes is  that young and upcoming cricketing talent that our country has always been blessed with, uses this opportunity to harness their talent and soon start to compete for selection in the national side. LPL is a great opportunity given to Sri Lankans to see many cricketing stars in action, whilst passionately supporting their preferred team all in our turf. Supreme TV considers it a great privilege to take this rare entertainment to all Sri Lankans – the urban elite, as well as to every village, with their strong island wide coverage for a continuous period of almost a month.  For a cricket loving nation, which is slowly disengaging from the pandemic at this moment, opportunity to enjoy the high quality second season from home is   probably the best year end gift,” said RM Manivannan, Chairman Supreme TV.
