17th August 2023, Colombo: Mount Lotus Eye and ENT Hospitals, one of the newest hospitals of its kind in Sri Lanka, has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering the most advanced eye care technology in the country by unveiling Sri Lanka’s first Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) technology for glaucoma treatment.

Glaucoma is a common eye condition where the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, becomes damaged. It’s usually caused by fluid building up in the front part of the eye, which increases pressure inside the eye. Glaucoma can lead to loss of vision if it’s not diagnosed and treated early. This revolutionary laser treatment transforms glaucoma treatment in Sri Lanka by helping the management of it by effectively controlling the internal pressure of the eye through a single procedure, significantly reducing the need for daily medication in glaucoma patients. This cutting-edge treatment approach aligns with the recommendations of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK, which identifies SLT as the primary therapy for individuals newly diagnosed with chronic open-angle glaucoma.

The installation of the first ZEISS SLT at Mount Lotus Hospital is a significant milestone in its journey to offer the general public the most advanced technology in the field of ophthalmology in Sri Lanka. The technology benefits and empowers ophthalmologists and glaucoma specialists. It helps streamline the entire treatment process by enabling a comprehensive review of patient data prior to examination and treatment, facilitating SLT procedures, and providing centralized access to diagnostic data and laser treatment reports. ZEISS is an internationally leading German technology enterprise operating in the fields of optics and optoelectronics. The technology was installed by DIMO Healthcare, the authorized local agent for ZEISS and the healthcare arm of leading diversified conglomerate DIMO.

Dr. Saman P. Basnayake – The General Manager of Mount Lotus Eye and ENT Hospitals stated, “Once again, Mount Lotus Hospital has raised the bar when it comes to providing Sri Lankans with the most advanced eye care technology available in the world. We are proud to launch the Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) technology and elevate the standard of glaucoma treatment not only in the hospital but the whole of Sri Lanka. Patients who undergo this procedure can move away from the use of eye drops for glaucoma which will drastically improve their quality of life.”

Mount Lotus Eye and ENT Hospitals is a specialized hospital dedicated to delivering world-class Eye and ENT medical solutions to local and international patients. Located at No.102, Galle Road, Mount Lavinia, the hospital is fully-equipped with modern medical technologies and highly-acclaimed, skilled professionals to provide medical and surgical solutions for any kind of Eye and ENT impairment. Convenient and automatic monthly settlement of bills now possible for six widely-used utility companies in Sri Lanka

Credit card holders of Commercial Bank of Ceylon can now automate paying their monthly bills of Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) and Lanka Electricity Company (LECO) and enjoy uninterrupted services, following the addition of these two utility companies to the Bank’s Automatic Bill Settlement facility.

Prior to the addition of SLT and LECO bills the Bank’s credit card customers could automate their payments to four of the most subscribed utility service providers in the country – Dialog, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), Mobitel and the National Water Supply & Drainage Board (NWSDB).

The addition of SLT and LECO to the Automatic Bill Settlement facility further enhances the versatility of the service provided to customers and the convenience offered by Commercial Bank to its cardholders. The extension of this hassle-free facility to include more service providers enables customers to conveniently manage all their utility payments through a single Commercial Bank Card at any given time and helps them to adopt digital payment habits, the Bank said.

To avail of this hassle-free bill payment facility, ComBank credit card holders simply have to enter their credit card details via the Bank’s website, accept terms and conditions and register a designated card, just once, the Bank said. They can complete this seamless online registration process without having to visit a branch. After successful registration for the service, each utility or any other entity will present the customer’s monthly bill amount to the bank and bank will authorise the payment on behalf of the credit card holder and send the receipt of payment to the customer via e-mail or SMS.

Commercial Bank Card holders can register their Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay and LankaPay/JCB Credit Cards to use the Automatic Bill Settlement facility. The Bank has been offering this facility for the settlement of bills to other entities since 2017. Besides ensuring that bills are settled on time without any involvement from the customer, the Automatic Bill Settlement facility prevents accumulation of arrears due to unpaid bills, saves customers from delinquency fees and prevents disconnection of utility services due to delayed payments. Furthermore, customers can earn Max Loyalty Rewards points that can be redeemed later on at many reputed merchant outlets island-wide.

Commercial Bank cards are the market leader in Sri Lanka with a market share of over 23%. The Bank offers a variety of credit cards in the Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers as well as in the premium segment. The cards are equipped with ‘Tap ’n Go’ NFC technology and are backed by a strong NFC Point-of-Sale (POS) network. ComBank Cards provide an exciting array of promotions and offers across all categories in addition to the Max Loyalty Rewards scheme for selected card categories covering both credit and debit cards.

Sri Lanka’s first 100% carbon neutral bank, the first Sri Lankan bank to be listed among the Top 1000 Banks of the World and the only Sri Lankan bank to be so listed for 12 years consecutively, Commercial Bank operates a network of 270 branches and 950 automated machines in Sri Lanka. While selling assets may be the easiest solution to ward off the national crisis Sri Lanka currently faces, another option lies in transforming loss-making SOEs (State Owned Enterprise) whose rich assets can be turned around to profitability driven and managed by clean, experienced corporate executives, said the SLT Group Chairman Rohan Fernando. He made these remarks while addressing the CMA National Management Accounting Conference 2022 in a session titled ‘State-Owned Enterprises – Are They Well-Managed or Mismanaged’.

“Our country faces key issues in several sectors. Currently privatizing state institutions that are running losses of up to billions of dollars is a key topic of conversation among the government, economists, think tanks and donors looking to reform the country’s economy,” Fernando said.

“If you take our Company (SLT Group) as an example, we did what we did by gaining the confidence of the trade unions and the staff on four fundamental principles namely ‘Zero Corruption’, ‘Maximize Efficiency’, ‘Minimize Waste’ and ‘Inclusiveness in Management. Yes, just these four principles brought to the fore which kept our staff content and at peace with no industrial disputes,” he elaborated.

Citing the overburdened transport sector of the country as an example Fernando said, “Railways holding multi-billion rupees worth of assets in fixed infrastructure and rolling stock but how often do we see trains running on these rails and at what speed? Do we need to sell or restructure with the participation of staff and credible investments? Food for thought. The shortage of public transport during peak hours, overcrowding, congestion, lack of planning and coordination, and fuel wastage are dilemmas that need urgent attention. This is just one worrisome institution which can be transformed from a national burden to a crown jewel.”

He elaborated further how Sri Lanka’s judicial process can also be improved by digital platforms to deliver justice without delay. Shedding insight, Fernando noted that citizens do not have access to appropriate legal redress and equitable relief due to the higher number of cases. Due to the lengthy time taken for resolution, the system is overburdened with physical documents and lack of integration between relevant institutions. Thus, a large number of citizens waste days in court and still come away with limited information relating to their cases.

Fernando added, “Our Agri-value chain faces issues, so do our overly burdened healthcare sector. We need to understand the challenges and address these issues. Critical sectors and services must be transformed into efficient, transparent, and profitable entities which in turn can transform people’s lives – this is the true system change the country needs. Currently, state welfare is offered to all citizens rich or poor which the government coffers cannot afford. Whereas the welfare offered should only be provided to the deserving who are at the bottom of the social strata through a digital platform identifying the poorest.”

“Yes, we are beset with issues and challenges – when crises are in motion, turning them into opportunities often requires new ways of seeing, thinking, and responding. SLT epitomizes how it can be done. SLT is a prime example of seizing opportunities and being able to bring impactful change for the nation,” Fernando opined.
