Working towards a shared objective of sustainable socio-economic development in Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka’s leading private sector bank HNB PLC has partnered with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Through the partnership, JICA – Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) executing agency – will leverage its experience as a long-standing development partner to the island nation, and HNB’s broad expertise and island-wide branch and customer network, to solve social issues by enhancing economic development and poverty alleviation, and driving socially responsible, environmentally sustainable finance.

The partnership will help focus resources into agriculture, dairy production, value chain financing, women’s entrepreneurship development, MSME development and digital transformation. Moreover, the collaboration will also prioritize investments into enterprises and initiatives with the potential to support mitigation and adaptation to global climate change and other critical social protection services.

“HNB is honoured to partner with JICA to support a sustainable, inclusive, grassroots-led revival of the Sri Lankan economy. The close friendship and shared respect between Japan and Sri Lanka has always been a source of strength for our nation, and we take this opportunity to express our gratitude to JICA for partnering with HNB in our shared mission to drive progress on sustainable development, enhance livelihoods, and modernize our nation’s economy from the grassroots up,” HNB Managing Director/CEO, Jonathan Alles said.

Commenting on the significance of the agreement, JICA Sri Lanka Office Chief Representative, Tetsuya Yamada said: “With this partnership, we will be able to expand our reach to more people, providing greater benefits and a stronger development impact through HNB’s wide network and expertise, which JICA alone could never do.  Particularly, incremental effect is expected for the empowerment of those people and enterprises who struggled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis. Through our joint efforts, we can help them to overcome their difficulties and get back onto a growth trajectory.”

13 Athletes set to bring victory to Sri Lanka on International Stage

Colombo, 17 August 2023 – Crysbro conceived the vision of “Next Champ” almost a half a decade ago, but it blossomed into a full scale junior athletic strategy in 2019 with the advent of the NOC SL – CRYSBRO NEXT CHAMP initiative where programme supported twenty fledgling junior athletes who had the promise to deliver locally and internationally.

In reality, at the end of the first phase it proved that envisioning has borne the desired result and during the explanation we will dwell upon the details.

Now, following up on the success and high-potential of the previous edition, Phase II of the NOC SRI LANKA – CRYSBRO NEXT CHAMP initiative is once again shining a deserving light on Sri Lanka’s young, committed and active talent who reside across the rural regions of the country, this time with a 13-strong roster consisting of promising athletes from across the rural communities of Sri Lanka.

An empowering and futuristic initiative from inception, NOC SRI LANKA – CRYSBRO NEXT CHAMP is the result of a successful collaboration between the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka and Crysbro, a 100% Sri Lankan-owned agriculture-based Group of Companies that is active in rural areas in the country.

The announcement was made at the Sri Lanka Olympic House Auditorium on August 17, 2023, and was attended by key individuals representing both organisations, as well as members of the local media.

Explaining the advent of phase II, NOC Sri Lanka, President, Suresh Subramanian that “As we saw with the immense success of our first phase, we know that Sri Lanka is blessed with an abundance of very talented and resilient young people who haven’t received the support they deserve, in order to excel in their athletic interests. The NOC SRI LANKA – CRYSBRO NEXT CHAMP initiative has therefore been reignited with a second phase, and we are proud to announce that we have identified 13 gifted athletes who will receive the support they need to propel their skill and growth to bring further victory to Sri Lanka and shed light on the more deserving and capable youth potential in the country. We are grateful to once again join forces with our partners in this initiative, Crysbro, and look forward to extending this fruitful relationship with every new stage.”

An exhilarated, Crysbro Marketing Manager Amores Sellar commenting on the success of Phase I noted “The immense feeling of pride for our country and the forthcoming generations with the NOC SRI LANKA – CRYSBRO NEXT CHAMP initiative is very strong, as we championed this area of identifying and supporting the success of aspiring young athletes who were hidden in the rural areas of Sri Lanka, and that effort has grown into a national treasure. We are very thankful to the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka, and are excited to once again join forces and play an integral role in bringing pride, success and international recognition to our country. We wish all the very best to our new athletes and hope they dominate the international stage.”

The NOC SRI LANKA – CRYSBRO NEXT CHAMP initiative supports and nurtures the growth and development of young and aspiring sportsmen and women, providing them with food supplements, clothing, sporting gear, equipment, training, and a monthly wage to propel them towards successful sporting careers and bring pride to the nation.

Phase One of the NOC SRI LANKA – CRYSBRO NEXT CHAMP initiative discovered high-potential athletes like Nethmi Ashinsa, who earned a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2022 – the first medal for Sri Lanka in the Wrestling event at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Also, Tharushi  Karunarathne brought home Gold from the 800m Women’s Sprinting event at the Asian Athletic Championship 2023.

Besides the programme also supported a number of Crysbro Scholarship holders to develop their skills overseas in a scheme outside the main programme.

The highly anticipated “Top50” Professional and Career Women Awards 2023, organized by Women in Management (WIM) in partnership with Women in Work, a collaboration between the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Government of Australia, successfully concluded, honouring exceptional women from Sri Lanka and the Maldives who have made remarkable contributions to their respective fields.

The 11th edition of the awards celebrated women representing diverse professions such as hospitality, banking and finance, logistics and supply chains, entrepreneurship, media and law, amongst others, for their outstanding achievements and inspiring influence on their communities. The event also recognized Sri Lankan organizations that have played a pivotal role in supporting the growth and empowerment of women in the workplace. The Hon. Dinesh Gunawardena, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, was the Chief Guest at the event.

Dr Sulochana Segera, Founder and Chairperson of Women in Management (WIM), expressed her enthusiasm about this year’s awards, “The 2023 awards were a celebration of resilience, optimism, hard work, and growth. As we navigated through unprecedented challenges over the past year, the winners of this year’s awards serve as a reminder of the boundless possibilities and opportunities that can arise from adversity. These women have showcased their extraordinary potential, challenging the status quo for the greater good. Over the past decade, the Top50 Awards has provided a platform for women to showcase their talents, achievements and, most importantly, to inspire others.”

With over 900 past award winners locally and internationally, the ‘Top50’ Professional and Career Women Awards aims to showcase the significant role women play as leaders, employees, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders in contributing to sustainable and inclusive economic growth in the country.

Marking IFC’s eighth consecutive year in co-hosting the event, Alejandro Alvarez de la Campa, Country Manager for IFC Sri Lanka and Maldives said, “Unleashing the potential of people, both men and women, is the much-needed panacea for a resilient, robust recovery. This could also help the world in better dealing with future crises. For Sri Lanka, women’s socio-economic empowerment therefore remains more relevant than ever. It presents an opportunity to redress deep-seated inequities. Now is the time for less pledges, and more proactive, integrated actions to create a future that works for everyone, built by everyone. To ensure a resilient recovery, the path should be gender inclusive – and women should be at the heart of the path to recovery. We need to ‘build forward fairer’ for economies and societies to build back better.”

Supported through the IFC-DFAT Women in Work programme, this year’s Top50 Awards aims to showcase the resilient leadership Sri Lankan women have shown, amidst the back-to-back twin-crises Sri Lanka recently endured.

Australia’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Paul Stephens also remarked that, “Promoting gender equality is a key priority for the Australian Government through our development programme and across everything we do here in Sri Lanka. Congratulations to all the women who are receiving awards today. You are an inspiration and role models to many young women in Sri Lanka and encourage other women to strive for and reach great heights in their professional careers.”

With over  514 nominations, the judging, which was conducted purely based on merit, was chaired by Kasturi Chelleraja Wilson, Executive Director/Group Chief Executive Officer Hemas Holdings PLC; Dr. Mariyam Shakeela, Honorary Consul of Belgium in Maldives, former Cabinet Minister in Maldives and CEO of SIMDI; Sarah Twigg, Program Manager of Women in Work at IFC; Santosh Menon, Chairman of FCB Kl.LK; Dinesh Weerakkody, Chairman of Board of Investment of Sri Lanka; Prof. Selvaraj Oyyan Pillay, UUNIMAS Kuala Lumpur Learning Centre GIA; Dunston Pereira, CEO Private Office of HH Sheikh Ahamed bin Faisal Al Qassimi; Ngozi Oyewole, CEO of Noxie Limited and President – Women in Africa; and Gowri Rajan, Director of Sun Match Company.

Are you one of those people that has always wished your feet were as healthy as the rest of your body? We all are born with different types of feet. Even our own feet are not the same. And every foot is unique in its shape and size. But our feet have a lot more to offer than just carrying us around everywhere we go!

It is found that 75% of us, live with a foot imbalance. We had lived with those imbalances for a long-time causing pain and discomfort at some point of our lives, especially the physically active individuals, disallowing to enjoy their lives.

However, back in 2003, Erkki Hakkala, a physiotherapist who specialised in podiatric medicine founded FootBalance, which brought up the solution to foot imbalances allowing us to move easier and walk faster, making every step better. And in 2020, FootBalance extended its services to Sri Lanka. Currently, FootBalance Sri Lanka is on a journey of healing many sportsmen and women’s feet problems, the pains and aches of individuals who have been suffering by not being able to move those feet faster and easier.

At the time FootBalance is celebrating its third Anniversary in Sri Lanka, we managed to get hold of the Chief Physiotherapist of the FootBalance operation to further help us get to know about how FootBalance heals the feet of Sri Lankans.

1.  Can you tell me about yourself and your role at Footbalance?

I am Fasla Fahmy. I am professionally practicing physiotherapy and have been working for FootBalance for the past three years. I also have a keen interest in exercise and sports science that focuses on the science behind the performance of sports individuals. At FootBalance I examine patients to diagnose various foot and ankle conditions and provide the appropriate insoles for a variety of foot and ankle needs.

2. To whom do you recommend these customized insoles?

Custom insoles are recommended for anybody at any time, as they alleviate any symptoms of pain and discomfort while maintaining proper alignment of the body. Although it is of greater importance for people who suffer from flat feet, everyone regardless of their foot type can benefit from insoles. Because they help redistribute weight evenly across your feet. And we have witnessed amazing results in conditions like flat feet, plantar fasciitis, pronated ankle, corns and calluses, and prevention of diabetic pre-ulceration.

3. Are there any restrictions for someone to have their insoles prepared?

Every foot is unique. Hence, the first point of contact is to seek relevant professional examination to investigate whether an orthotic is genuinely required. If this analysis proves the case, the custom insoles must comply with general ergonomic requirements, because exaggerated arches or improper insoles can lead to a range of problems, from occasional pain to permanent structural damage.

4How many types of insoles are available for customers and how do they differ from each other?

In Sri Lanka, we have introduced six types of insoles, which are in different characteristics;

I. FootBalance Max – It is a moderately cushioned insole for exercise and general lifestyle. It features a stiffer core designed to provide support for heavier individuals with excessive pronation of the ankle.

II. FootBalance Impact – Developed for high-impact activities. This insole provides greater support and stability in explosive foot movements. It comes with a forefoot and heel cushion for better shock absorption. It also has a perforated forefoot for ventilation and quick drying.

III. FootBalance Medical Black – This is one of the top-selling insoles, extremely durable and breathable.  It has a topcoat with an anti-fungal finish and thick cushioning for high-quality shock absorption.

IV. Leather insole with ¾ length – Specially designed for snug-fit shoes. The ¾ length insoles are made of genuine leather. Provides arch support for formal, casual,

and open-door footwear.

V. Medical Green Soft – These soft medical insoles are developed for sensitive feet which need to decompress and reduce the concentration of pressure points. Suitable for Diabetic and pre-ulcerative conditions.

VI. FootBalance Kids insole – Pediatric arch supports for kids between 6 to 10 years of age. It promotes proper GAIT pattern and corrects misalignments resulting in premature muscle tightness

5. What materials are used to manufacture these insoles and where are they manufactured at?

FootBalance insoles are originally from Finland. It consists of four layers. A durable top layer with an anti-fungal coating. Then comes a cushion with high-quality shock absorption. Next, patent custom molded balance plate for dynamic arch support. And finally, at the bottom, a high-strength base surface with EVA copolymer.

6. How are these insoles moulded and how long does it take to mould a pair?

Initially, we carry out a manual examination of the feet. Then the feet are analyzed with a special FootBalance Podoscope scan. Based on the scan findings and the activity level of the individual, we decide on a suitable pair of insoles. The heated insoles are molded to each foot individually. The Custom wedges will be added if required to ensure greater stability. Additionally, an exercise plan can be specified for the individual. The whole process of scanning to molding takes 20 – 30 minutes to complete.

7. How often these customized insoles must be changed?

It depends on the severity of the condition and the activity level of the individual. Roughly, insoles last for 2-3 years in general use. And 1-2 years as a highly active sportsman.

8. Where can your potential customers find FootBalance stores?

There is 80+ FootBalance outlets across the globe. And the only store in Sri Lanka is in Colombo 04, it’s operated by FootBalance Sri Lanka. Currently, we do not have any other store in the country but we have plans for a few stores in the coming years.

FootBalance Sri Lanka

FootBalance is completing its successful third year and they are closely working with the global team and introducing the best products to Sri Lanka. With the current economic crisis, FootBalance is trying its level best to provide this new technology and products to the Sri Lankan market as and when it’s available.

FootBalance believes that Sri Lankans deserve the best products and it’s their prime duty to provide them on time. During the coming years, they are looking to expand at least 3 major cities, like Kandy, Galle, or Matara, and in Jaffna. Overpronation and Flat Feet?

In general, overpronation refers to how you walk, which can cause flat feet. The condition of flat feet is characterized by little to no arch in the foot. It is possible to inherit flat feet or develop them over time. People can have flat feet because their arches never developed. Your arches might collapse as a result of injury to the leg tendon that supports them. The condition is referred to as adult-acquired flat feet or fallen arches.

Overpronation

What is overpronation?

Overpronation is when your ankles roll inwards when you walk. It is a common GAIT problem that can cause your feet to fatigue quickly while walking or running. With too much pronation, your foot rolls inwards too far and you put pressure on your shins and knees. Too much pronation can lead to joint, muscle and knee pain. It can also make walking and running difficult and cause foot pain.

Your arches are the bones on the bottom of your feet that support your weight and help you maintain your balance when you move. Your arches play a crucial role in supporting the legs and knees. A normal arch height for an adult is between 5-6 centimeters. People with flat feet have low or no arches, and this can lead to other problems like ankle pain, knee problems, hip problems and lower back pain. Foot complications caused by flat feet can make it uncomfortable to walk or even stand for long periods. The condition can also lead to other problems with your legs like Achilles tendonitis and shin splints.

Causes of Flat Feet

The primary cause of flat feet is overuse of the muscles in the leg that are connected to the arch. This can lead to the weakening of these muscles and cause the arch to fall. Other causes include sprains and strains to the ligaments that support the arch, and some babies are born with flat feet because of problems with the development of the bones in the foot. Additional factors that can contribute to developing flat feet include diabetes, obesity, arthritis, pregnancy, an inherited abnormality in the foot structure, and the use of certain medications.

Symptoms

The symptoms of flat feet typically develop gradually over some time. However, they can also develop rapidly following an injury to the foot. The most common symptoms of flat feet include pain in the ankles, legs, and lower back, as well as difficulty walking and performing other physical activities. Other symptoms may include numbness or tingling in the toes, calluses on the bottom of the feet, and heel spurs.

Treatments

Flat feet can be treated with rest, pain medications, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications. If the cause is found to be a medical condition such as diabetes or arthritis, your doctor may recommend treating the condition with medication or a change in your diet. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to repair the damaged ligaments and restore normal function to the foot.

FootBalance Orthotics

Tips to prevent the development of flat feet

There are a few things you can do to prevent the recurrence of flat feet. Your physician may suggest that you change the type of shoes you wear or wear inserts called orthotics that provide extra support to the bottom of the foot. This is also known as custom moulded insoles. Now available in Sri Lanka as well. Exercising the muscles in your feet regularly will also help strengthen your arches and reduce pressure on your joints. See a doctor if your symptoms are severe or do not improve after a few weeks of treatment.
