14th October 2022, Colombo: Vision Care, Sri Lanka’s largest vision and eye wear solutions provider, celebrated World Children’s Day by partnering with popular radio station Neth FM to organise a special children’s event at the Kaluthara Vidyalaya named “Wishma Lanthaya”.

The event attracted a large number of children and their parents from the surrounding areas as they enjoyed a day of fun, laughter, exciting activities and special gifts from Vision Care. It drew a lot of praise from the participants especially as it came at a time when the children of Sri Lanka are going through a prolonged difficult period owing to the disruption of studies and extracurricular activities since early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis which is ongoing even today.

During the event, Vision Care team members emphasized the importance of protecting children’s eyes and how parents can ensure that they do so in a proper manner in today’s technology-driven world where online learning and screen time among children has increased significantly. For the past two and a half years there has been a significant increase in online learning among Sri Lankan children resulting in them using computers, tablets, smartphones and TVs for several hours daily. However, the increased screen time has invariably led to a condition known as Digital Eye Strain or Computer Vision Syndrome in some children. It is a long-term vision-related condition triggered by excessive digital screen viewing and has several symptoms such as the changing of one’s vision from time to time, eye and body fatigue, headache, dry eyes, and pain in the neck and shoulders.

To ensure your child’s eye and general health it is important to take them for regular eye examinations. Early detection and treatment are vital first steps that can be taken before their education and other activities are negatively affected. As a responsible parent, you can easily get your child’s eyes tested by visiting any Vision Care branch where eye tests are carried out by experienced eyecare professionals using state-of-the-art equipment. You can rest assured that you have taken the best course of action to safeguard your children’s eyes.

07th October 2021, Colombo: Vision Care, Sri Lanka’s largest eye care provider, is celebrating World Children’s Day by highlighting the importance of protecting children’s eyes and what steps parents can take to ensure that they do so given the significant increase in online learning and screen time among children. In order to educate parents about this, Vision Care conducted an interactive webinar recently on the Vision Care YouTube channel where qualified optometrists educated the audience on the subject.

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent country-wide lockdowns, there has been a significant increase in online learning among children resulting in them staring at computers, tablets, smartphones and TVs for several hours daily. This has caused what is known as Digital Eye Strain or Computer Vision Syndrome, a long-term vision-related condition associated with excessive digital screen viewing. The condition has several symptoms such as the changing of one’s vision from time to time, eye fatigue, headache, dry eyes, body fatigue and pain in the neck and shoulders. Research has also indicated that Myopia or shortsightedness has also become a common condition among children who are exposed to digital screens for a long period of time.

Misalignment of our eyes is also an effect of such long periods of time spent in front of digital screens. While this could be a short-term condition, it has been known to remain longer in certain cases. This condition is commonly described as ” Squint” or “Strabismus”. This also can lead to some vision related problems in the future.

All digital screens emit a harmful blue light which may cause retinal problems in children with aging and impaired vision. This blue light also affects the body’s circadian rhythm or sleep cycle resulting in low quality sleep.

Regular eye examinations are essential for your child’s eye and general health. Early detection and treatment are important before their education and other activities are disrupted. The first step is to get your eyes checked by an eyecare professional. Based on the test results, the eyecare professional will generally recommend the use of children’s computer glasses as the best solution for this condition. Computer glasses filter the harmful blue light emitted by digital screens, protect your child from eye strain, and significantly reduce the risk of long-term eye health problems. A pair of Crizal Prevencia glasses with Blue Rays Filter lens can be used to control the light emitted by digital screens.

You can easily get your child’s eyes tested and obtain computer glasses by visiting any Vision Care branch where eye tests are done using state-of-the-art equipment operated by eyecare professionals with years of experience in the field.

01st October 2021, Colombo: Eric Rajapakse Opticians, Sri Lanka’s leading eyecare specialist with over 100 years of expertise, is marking World Children’s Day by informing parents on measures they can take to safeguard their children’s eyesight in today’s pandemic-hit world where online learning has led to children staring at screens excessively on a daily basis.

Staring at screens for long hours can cause what is medically known as Digital Eye Strain or Computer Vision Syndrome where symptoms include changing of vision from time to time, eye fatigue, headache, dry eyes, body fatigue and pain in the shoulders and neck areas. Additionally, Myopia or shortsightedness is also widespread among such children. The blue light emitted by all screens can also cause retinal detachment in children with aging and impaired vision and affects the body’s sleep cycle resulting in poor sleep and exhaustion.

As a parent, you can address this issue and ensure that your child’s eyes will be protected by taking your child to an eyecare professional for regular eye examinations. Computer glasses are generally considered to be the ideal solution for this eye condition as they block the harmful blue light emitted by all digital screens. All Eric Rajapakse Opticians branches will offer free eye check-ups for children during the month of October and 10% discounts on computer glasses till 14th October.

September 28th, 2021: In celebration of Children’s Day 2021, the country’s best health insurance company Softlogic Life, invites parents to let their inner child run free in order to foster positive mental wellness within themselves and their children during the pandemic. Parents are encouraged to take moments of their day to spend meaningful time playing with their children who were confined to their homes for close to two years due to the global pandemic.

As a brand committed towards driving a great quality life among all Sri Lankans and as the life insurance provider for more than 1.5Mn Sri Lankan lives, Softlogic Life considers it their duty to support individuals and families upon their quest to navigate life amidst this pandemic while staying safe.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shifted our daily lives on an absolute granular level. It has locked us all within four walls and withdrawn us “social beings” from the daily interactions with the rest of the world that brought us a sense of mental wellness, stability and joy. The many lockdowns in Sri Lanka alone brought forward a complex array of challenges with some unspoken negative mental repercussions for both children and parents.

Grief, fear, uncertainty, social isolation, little to no extracurricular exposure, reduced and changed interactions with peers and family, increased screen time and fatigue, and parental fatigue have deeply impacted the mental health and wellbeing of adults and children. Parents too are victims, with having to juggle work from home or business responsibilities, online schooling for children, increased parental anxiety, stress, depression, and burnout resulting from multiple lockdowns.  While parents have been trying their very best, it has undoubtedly become difficult to mitigate their children’s problems because of the increased workload, stress and uncertainty in their own lives.

Counselling Psychologist, Avanthi Jayasinghe states that there isn’t one particular method to overcome these psychosocial challenges. However, simple daily tasks which does not burden parents can offer themselves as solutions to a great extent. One such way is to connect with a person’s inner child at least once a day to incite a positive transformation of the environment within a home. Interestingly, the inner child is a psychotherapeutic concept that was researched and popularized by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, who utilized this aspect of subpersonality to help his clients.

“We were all at one time children and the inner child is the purest form of each person. The child you once were, who played Hopscotch or “Butta” with your friends all day or made crowns out of coconut leaves, did not just get up and vanish, to be replaced by a perfect, always responsible adult. Our inner child is the foundation for our relationships with others and the place from which we make decisions about love, trust, and safety.  When parents tap into their inner child at least 10 minutes each day, recreate their favourite moments of childhood play and joy with their kids, it allows them to avail themselves of this massive burden of lockdown-induced stress, and most importantly connect with their children in a deeper compassionate sense, giving their children a break and a release from the tech immersed world that they are confined to. In other words, bringing out a parent’s inner child will result in happier parents who are more attuned to their child’s psychosocial needs and are capable of making their children feel heard and understood,” stated Psychologist, Avanthi Jayasinghe.

“Right now, when they severely lack play and social interaction, parents need to be creative and recreate highlights of their childhood with their children. This will aid a child’s development, completely transform the stressful environment within a household and enhance the entire family’s wellbeing while strengthening the parent-child bond that needs to be strong now more than ever. This may include playing house, making ‘sellang buth’, creating a playground setting with a cloth or rope swing, pillow fight, playing hopscotch, building ‘Kurumbatti’ Machines and so on” she continued to state.

Therefore, this Children’s Day, Softlogic Life invites all parents to bring out their inner child at least 10 minutes each day to contribute towards a more productive and positive home environment. This is because the constant necessity for psychological connectedness with another human being is vital to the survival and satisfactory development of both children and parents, not only in the psychological domain, but also in the physical and cognitive domains.

While everyone exists as adults, an inner child is still very much a part of each person, and it is often a strong source of strength. While the day-to-day stress of taking charge, and running one’s life can squeeze out every bit of enthusiasm out, tapping into one’s inner child can undoubtedly allow people to look at the world with a fresh set of hopeful eyes, the eyes of wonder, the eyes of a child.

November 30, 2020

29th November 2020: The Planters’ Association of Ceylon marked World Children’s Day 2020 with a pledge to establish 35 Child Development Centers (CDC’s) on estates belonging to their membership of 21 Regional Plantation Companies (RPC). This will add the total number of CDC’s on RPC estates to 258. The setting up of these centers will be carried out by the Plantation Human Development Trust (PHDT), a tripartite organisation of RPC’s, plantation trade unions and Government of Sri Lanka.

Although early childhood development care started in the plantations only in 2015, as of now 223 such centres have over 30,000 children, being taken care of by qualified teachers, all of whom are diploma holders in early childhood development.

“Our vision is to make sure that no child is left behind and any investments we have made towards early development of children on our estates is so that they may thrive and have the mind-set for  opportunities, which their parents did not have,” said Chairman Planters’ Association, Bhathiya Bulumulla.

“The work being carried out at our advanced Child Development Centers through the outstanding efforts of our dedicated officers represents a major advancement from the early custodial structures that used to exist. It is testament to how far child development and protection has come in our estates, supported by generous investments from RPCs. We will continue to promote the growth of our youth – investing in our future means investing in our children,” Bulumulla emphasized.

“These capable and qualified officers operate the CDCs, and PHDT reports that 365 of these officials are also trained to carry out Child Development Assessments to ensure the youth in their care are developing socially and academically, he added.

PHDT is registered to conduct diploma training courses and to award nationally recognized diplomas in Child Development. In 2019, 672 new diploma holders were recorded.

In addition, the Early Childhood Development programme also recognizes the parents’ role in the emotional, social, and physical development of their children. RPCs, through PHDT, have implemented Parental Awareness Programs to further safeguard the children of estate workers. Over 57,000 parents have thus far benefitted from awareness programs, which cover five modules – including intellect and skills development, and the prevention of domestic violence.

Post-privatization and RPC ownership in 1995, the estate sector has seen major advances in projects to foster child development. Early ‘Pillaiymadu’ custodial facilities were improved into estate crèches, and subsequently, with the influence of the RPCs and PHDT, advanced Child Development Centers were constructed.

With the goal of improving the lives of children in the estate sector, the work to build and renovate CDCs is rapidly progressing. As part of the Early Childhood Development project introduced in 2015, the investment and tireless efforts of RPCs have generated 65 newly built and 158 renovated centers. Approximately 30,000 children have been registered for supportive custodial care across the estates.
